Dog Food Question???
Hey guys just seeing what is a good fed for the winter time for a hound that getting hunted 5-6 nights a week. As of right now I'm feeding the Sprotsmix Wholesomes chick and rice 26/16. My female is doing very well on it but would like to get her on a higher protein and fat for the winter. Just wanted to see what everyone would recommend.
Thanks
Every one has their own preference when it comes to feed, and there's nothing wrong with that. I myself feed Victor 26/18 and Victor 30/20. Really like them both.
dog food
i feed victor 26/18 year yound works for me

Sportmix has a new grain free 32-25 chicken and 25-25 beef formula that's been on the market for six weeks. The price is competitive to anything grain free in a 40 pound bag. Ive switched at least five people from Victor to this.
Victor 30/20 is hard to beat
Valu-Pak 28/20 is corn and soy free and is a very good feed, 50# bag $27 is hard to beat! My dogs are doing very well on it

Even though I know people are gonna scream "but it's got corn!!!", I'm a fan of Purina Pro Plan Sport. I've seen it maintain extremely hard-hunted dogs when many others wouldn't.

DOG FOODS
THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT DOG FOODS .LOTS AND LOTS OF GOOD DOG FOOD WITH DIFFERENT PROTIEN AND FAT COMBINATIONS. WITH THAT BEING SAID ,THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT DOGS WITH MANY DIFFERENT MOTABILIZIMS AND THEY DIGEST THOSE DIFFERNT FOODS AND PROTIEN AND FAT COMBINATIONS DIFFERENTLY. ONE DOG MAY DO GREAT ON ONE BRAND OF FOOD AND DO BADLY ON ANOTHER BRAND. ME AND MY SON HAS 14 COYOTE HOUNDS AND COONHOUNDS BETWEEN US . WE HAVE TRIED ABOUT EVERY BRAND ADVERTIZED WE HAD GOOD LUCK WITH SOME BRANDS AND BAD LUCK WITH THE SUPPOSE TO BE BEST BRANDS,NO CORN ,NO SOY ,NO THIS AND NO THAT ,ALL MEAT PROIENS . BUT WE HAVE CAME TO THE CONCLUSION FIND A DOG FOOD THAT YOUR DOGS DO GOOD ON AND WITH LESS CLEANUP AFTER EATING.. THE PRICE AND THE CORN CONTENT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH GOOD DOGFOOD FIND THE BRAND THAT BEST MAKES YOUR DOG PERFORM GOOD AND LOOK GOOD AND THEY LIKE , WE ARE AT THIS PRESENT TIME FEEDING { RETRIEVER HI PRO } 26/18 AND ITS $20.00 A 55 PD BAG AND EVERYDOG WE HAVE LOOKS ,PERFORMS AND DOES GREAT ON IT. NOW SOME OF YOU GUYS WILL BE SAYING ITS JUNK DOGFOOD THATS ALRIGHT .THIS IS MY OPINION AND MY DOGS OPINION ,,HAVE A BLESSED ONE ,I HOPE YOU FIND A DOGFOOD THAT SERVES YOUR EXPECTATIONS AND KEEPS YER DOGS WORKIN AND LOOKIN GOOD....FROM THE RIVERBOTTOM,,,RON

Throw a 15oz can of mackerel in with whatever cereal feed you choose and they will be good to go.
I have mine on Native Level 4 and mackerel and have hunted her 7 of the last 8 nights 4 to 6 hours each night. No, she doesn't come out of her barrel during the day but at dark she is flat ready to go and goes full speed till we are done. Yeah, she looks like she's been pulled through a knot hole backwards but I don't care how she looks, I care how she goes.

Pro Plan Sport
I am a big fan of Pro Plan Sport. I have tried about everything over the years and always thought my dogs were doing good on whatever i was feeding at the time. I decided to try Pro Plan a few years ago and in about a month or so i could see noticeable differences in the appearance and the stamina of my dogs. I will not feed anything but Pro Plan after using. One of the few that i never tried is Victor and i have heard nothing but good about it.
You guys can laugh if you want, but I've been feeding cow stomach for probably 6 mo's now and don't plan on going back to dog food based on the results.
9 out of 10 dogs no matter how fussy of eaters they are, will be bouncing up and down at feeding time. They WILL eat it right there...no cleaning it up later and you can put weight on a dog or keep weight on a dog pretty much regardless of circumstances. Dogs look great and got energy to spare.
This is one circumstance where you get what you pay for doesn't apply. It's cheap, but good. I get it fresh at a local butcher shop for $3. Keep it in a bag in a cooler and cut off chunk sizes based on the individual dog.
The biggest problem is you need to know how to sharpen a knife. Doesn't bother me but about once a week I take my knife over the leather strop. It will dull a knife if you don't know how to keep one sharp.

I've been feeding Victor for about a year now and I love it. Even feed it to the house dogs. I fed diamond extreme athlete before Victor and my hounds look great on either. I've also fed Purina proplan and dogs looked like crap! Same with sport mix, caliber, val-pak. I just can't keep a dog up with them and the mess is terrible. Some dogs do good on them but mine dont. Two thumbs up for victor.
I have fed Victor's for about 6 months now an going back to Purina, was up to 6 cups a day on some dogs still looked like they was fed coats was dull looking didn't have the drive they did on the Purina jmo .

I have fed Victor's 30/20 , and 24/20 dogs lose weight . I bear hunt and it take a little more feed to keep the dogs up , with that being said for the price of some feeds you would expect it to do better than the cheaper feeds when you have to feed more of the high dollar feed to get the same results .
.
This is the crazy thing about dog food. I feed Victor and dogs love it and if anything can get to fat on it around here.
I feed the 24/20 to my hounds.
I have two yorkies over there now eating some of their Ocean Fish because the vet said they had allergies so I tried Victor and it seems to work.

Does anyone add fish oil?

I feed Black Gold Performance Blend year round. When I am hunting everyday on lions, I add Dog Forte to give them a little something extra. Dogs don't get overly fat when sitting on the shelf and their haircoats are the best. Excellent muscle tone.
Adios,
Gary
Andy how much you selling the new Sportsmix X for?? It's $39.99 here in NC

I feed plain purina dog chow. year round. I hunt 4 days a week and usually road hunt them. I road hunt 5 miles plus what ever they do by chasing/tracking coon, possum, and fox. I add fish oil to their food. I also make a gravy out of cream of chicken soup, sweet potato and milk. Once a week I give each of them a fish. I don't have to add the suppliments but I do because I hope to get maximum life span.
