Kennel cough.
I guess kennel cough is running through Indiana. Just got my dogs over it. I have heard that once they get and recover, they won't get it again. Anyone know if this is true?

Not true
Ok, thanks. I had to wonder about it because from what I read, kennel cough is the canine version of the common cold and we all know there ain't no immunity to that.

Did and were you able to hunt your dogs with kennel cough? Now is not the time to get this.
This is a good question I have wondered about myself. Wiki has a pretty good write up on it...what I am getting out of the article is that it says, very often in a lot of dogs they show pretty high immunity once they have had it, even with repeated and constant exposure over long periods. So it sounds like most dogs can get it once and they most likely wont get it again.
Later it goes on to say that the vaccination works about like the human flu shot...it may be effective at prevention, but not always. It also says that autumn is the prime time for dogs to get this illness. I have seen a lot of dogs get it and none ever got it again that I know of.

My kennel has it right now.
My dogs are purty much over from what I can tell. I sterilized my dog box and wil do my kennels before I bring my new pup home. My question now is how long after they are over it until they no longer pose a risk of exposing other dogs, specifically my new pup?

This might give you an idea! Most vets say it will hang around for several weeks.
Quote!
When Bordetella and parainfluenza combine to cause tracheobronchitis, symptoms appear within a week of exposure (usually after three to four days) and continue for about 10 days. Even after symptoms disappear, the recovering patient remains contagious, shedding Bordetella bacteria for up to 14 weeks.

I just read up on it last night. They say about 10 days of coughing and about 14 days after that it can be transferred to other dogs. Guys are complaining about 5$ park fee heck I have dog in heat one with heart worms and kennel cough all going on. Cost me 75$ to visit Oaks this year and didn't get to hunt anything. Lol extra 5 because I forgot my tag at home. Lol bad year for me. Jim how long did yours cough
FOURTEEN WEEKS!!! Holy cow. Well my pup will just have take his chances, I'm not leaving him over at my buddies for no 14 weeks. He is 8 weeks old, the next 14 weeks are the most important weeks of his life and he's spending them in my kennel, cough or not
Thanks for the info Danny.

Kennel Cough is just a generic name given to an upper respiratory infection in dogs that can result from infection by several different bacteria and viruses. The most common is Bordetella and PI3 (Parainfluenza virus). The problem with most vaccines is that it only protects against one or two of the causative agents with no cross protection. We see Canine Influenza, Coccidiomycosis (valley fever), Mycoplasma, Canine Pneumovirus and other infectious agents causing these same symptoms.
I have not been impressed with the effectiveness of the vaccines in preventing "Kennel Cough" disease for this reason. We vaccinate for Bordetella for those going to kennels or traveling using the new oral Bordetella vaccine by BI. We still get infections in these dogs in a local kennel where we've isolated about 7 different causative agents now.
I'd say for traveling to dog events or for home protection in a kennel it's probably not a bad idea. We see a few dogs that do develop secondary pneumonia from these upper respiratory infections so we do treat them with Doxycycline for prevention purposes and it reduces symptoms in about half the time as not treating them. Doxycycline does have some anti inflammatory effects so it may be from that too.

I'm thinking my dogs have kennel cough. 4 of the 6 dogs I have here are coughing a lot. 2 of them look to have lost a little weight. They haven't lost there appetite. Do the dogs act like there trying to cough it up and just can't get it cleared? They're all still plenty active. My 8 year old female seems to be affected more then the others.

One of mine got it. I caught it fast and isolated her. Called vet and he gave me something you shoot in their nose for the other dogs. I did that and none of the others got it.

I have one that has had it for about 12 days now and this is his 10th day on antibiotics. He could not bark at all for almost a week but last night at feeding time his bark was back to normal. He still sounds like he is trying to clear his throat but it is much better than before. I have not hunted him since it started and I may wait until next week to hunt him again. He never stopped eating but he sure acted like he didn't feel good for about 5 days.

Usually pick it up around field trial season, most dogs appear to become immune. Only ever had one get it twice.
Thanks for the info fellas. I'll get them to the vet as soon as I can.

By all means taking em to the vet is the best thing. but you can save a lot of money by keeping a bottle of tylan50 around the house it will knock it right out.

I'm pretty sure we are dealing with Canine Influenza in these dogs that came down sick after PKC SS or the World Hunts in Illinois. The incubation time is as short as 2 days and it really hits some of these dogs hard.
Antibiotics may help with shortening the time of clinical signs but probably not. Most of these dogs cough for 7-10 days regardless of what is used. I do think antibiotics are needed in some of these dogs to prevent and treat the secondary bacterial infections that I've seen leading to sinus infections and pneumonia. Watch for any color to the mucous that may come from the nasal passages of these dogs and watch their temps closely. It should stay between 100.5 and 102.5. If it gets up in the 103 range at rest that could be a sign of infeciton.
Make sure you are keeping them well fed and watered and it doesn't hurt to throw in some SuperFuel mixed in hamburger along with your dog food to keep their immune systems strong during this time.
The strain of Canine Influenza going through Illinois right now is different than the strain we saw go through in the past. There is no proven vaccine for this current strain of virus and cross protection is not proven at this time.
