pup treeing squirrels ??????

okay fellas I have a young pup almost six months old that I'm really liking. He is hunting out good for his age 700 -800 yrds most the time sometimes further his is running track and is starting to tree at night. He has done very well on a couple of coons I have turned out for him ran and treed them with ease. now here lies the problem I still like to take him for daytime walks just to keep him in the woods while not hunting and training but here lately he has been treeing piles of squirrels. I know some guys start their pups on squirrels but I never have and how do I go about breaking this with out breaking him from treeing.thanks jay dengg

You will probably be breaking him from treeing slicks early in the night, but he may give squirrels up at nite seen them go both ways

I'm just curious why you posted the same question over here when John Gossett already gave you the correct answer on the prohound board . If you want a straight coondog you will never let them run and tree anything but a coon on purpose. From your description on the prohound board this dog is way past going on little puppy walks. Time to work him on coon only. Taking him in the daytime knowing he'll tree " a pile of squirrels " is the same as encouraging him . I'd also like to add for anyone with training questions be careful which advice you listen to . I usually see answers ranging from dead on to advice that could ruin a dog and everything in between. There are people on the board that talk like they're experts but have only hunted a very
short time and never trained the first dog . For example the advice you got on other board to shoot out cats and squirrels to your dog . Wrong.

I have dogs that tree squirrels all day and coons all night. I have never had a problem with a dog switching over and treeing slicks early. Dogs are lots smarter than we give them credit for. I have seen some real dandy dogs that go both ways and seen some that are better on squirrel than coon and vise versa. Lots of wives tells and superstition can set dogs back, rather than good handling and training. I know several people that their hounds go both ways but they say little about their day time adventures.

mr prince as you saw on the other board I stated the day time walks are over but as of yet nobody has given me an answer as to how to break him if this becomes a problem at night and as I usually do if I have a situation arise in which I lack the experience I like to get as many answers as possible use common sense and go from there.

If he is getting hunted at night there is no sense in letting him run in the day

he hasn't bothered them after dark at all up to this point. as a matter of fact he has only treed a couple times with the old dog even though he is running tracks. he is very tree minded so I'm not worried about that I would rather him work on the tracking part. I was just worried that if he did go to treeing squirrels after dark we have a ton of them around here that I would be whooping him more than anything. I guess i'll cross that bridge if and when I come to it for now it is strictly night time strictly coon.

What works for one dog may not work for the next. Dogs are different. To me letting a coondog pup tree squirrels in the daytime is just inviting trouble if you only want them to tree coons at night.

One of the best coonhound I've ever had was started on Squirrels and never had a problem with him on slicks. I've used that method since the 60's. on B&Ts.. Maybe the type of hound your hunting is the real problem. One mans opinion.

I don't start pups on squirrels they start themselves, and some will run them at night and some won't. A pup that's being taken to the woods during the day should be doing some tracking I would be disappointed if he wasn't

all my dogs are squirrel dogs. when i take them out at night, they never tree squirrels. i think it's because they're too busy running my fox into the next county.

I have never heard of anybody being scratch from squirrels.i always heard they were better eating.

I turn my redbone out when I get off work and he runs the yard treeing squirrels until I put him up at night. The only problem I have found with doing this is he leaves the tree early and goes off to find a new track or he will go off for a couple minutes and come back to the tree when I get there. We are working on both of these problems now, but he is pretty good about having the coon.

9 times out of 10, slick trees are just that. It's from a couple wires shorting out under their cranium. But people just glorifie in by blameing it on squirrels.

The dog should have enough brains to know you are breaking it off squirrels and not coon.... Besides if breaking it from treeing squirrels messes up it treeing coon it's not that special dog everyone looks for.

As far as how to break it off them. I'd break it just like I would if it was running any other type of trash.
