Ukc Nite Hunts

WHY IS A CLUB ONLY ALLOWED 7 REGULAR NITE HUNTS? THE CLUBS MAKE MORE ON THE HUNTS AND SHOWS THAN THE OTHER $KC AND ALOT OF CLUBS COULD USE THE EXTRA MONEY. ALOT OF THE CLUBS ARE GOIN OUT AND HAVE TO WAIT TILL THE HUNTS ROLL AROUND IN AN AREA TO GET A CHANCE TO HUNT YOUR DOG. WISH WE COULD HAVE ONE A MONTH.

NO ONE KNOWS THE ANSWER ?

Simple Start another club!

I agree 7 hunts ant very many.Majority of the hunts are held in the most miserable time if the year.Id like to see more hunts in the fall and winter.

GOOD ANSWER, ITS A LONG PROCESS BUT WE ARE IN THAT PROCESS NOW. CLUBS WOULD BENEFIT FROM MORE HUNTS AND SO WOULD UKC.

I AM A DIEHARD UKC HUNTER....

7 hunts are plenty when you find out only a few are going to help run that club. Trust me. I know.

the ukc should base the number of hunts per year based on the average of entries per year ! rewarding the clubs with big turn outs that want more hunts

If I am not mistaken will depend on how many clubs already exist in the surrounding area that you are trying to start a club. I know that there was a new club trying to start in WV and they were turned down, and if not mistaken it was because of the clubs that already existed within the 100 mile radius.

Fact is there isn't enough hunters to cover that many hunts. In the long run that many clubs or hunts wouldn't dramatically effect the turnouts

We lost a hunt we had scheduled due to lost paperwork! We never received the hunt packet and started trying to call UKC. It took 2 weeks before we finally reached some one and then was told we lost the hunt date even though the mix up wasn't on our end. Living in the south, most of our members work off-shore or on riverboats so we plan our hunts according to when most will be home. So losing a date is very aggravating especially when you're only home 6 months out of the year.
So in order to off set the difference we've started holding ACHA hunts and we love them. You can hunt everyday of the week except Sunday, you can hunt 60, 90, or 120 minutes. Even have 3 hr iron dog hunts. Hunt for money or not, clubs choice. Club decides entry fees & pay back. They have silver dollar bench shows. They're real affordable and hunter/club friendly. They have state races, circuits, little world & world hunts. You can hold 2 hunts a month!! Plus they just started field trials, water races, tree'n contest, & a equivilent of a hunt test. Titles go by cast wins. 5 gets you nite ch, 5 more gr.

Last time I checked, $KC pays at least double, if not triple or more, depending on the hunt compared to what UKC pays per dog at an event...

You better check your sources.

Really? Please explain, I am confused where the $18.50 can come from a $10, $12, $15 or even $20 entry?

$20.00 entry fee per dog
-$1.50 recording fee for UKC for each dog
-----------------------
$18.50 left over for the club per dog.

x2. Why a club that can only draw single digit entries to they're hunts is allowed up to 7 is beyond me. I think 7 is plenty for any club but the ones that regularly draw more entries should be rewarded with bigger events that don't count against their 7... (State Hunts, Breed Events, RQE, & etc).

I agree with the clubs that have bigger turn outs being rewarded with RQE's & breed hunts etc. Mainly because the clubs with bigger turn outs usually have more club members to help organize bigger hunts more efficient. However, I don't think smaller clubs should be held back with a fewer number of hunts simply because of lower numbers. Every club has to start somewhere and most clubs don't start out with big nice club houses or a lot of members. I see nothing wrong with at least allowing clubs 1 hunt a month. Even if they have smaller turn outs they're still generating a little money to help build their club and help support UKC. I personally don't like driving 80 or a 100 miles one way to hunt. It takes a fair amount of money to do so by the time you pay entry fees, gas, food etc. For those of us that work off our time at home is precious and we already miss out on half the hunts due to being gone at work. I hear a lot about coon hunting being on the decline etc but in reality there would probably be bigger turn outs if the clubs had a little more lead way as to when and how many hunts the could have. I personally would like to see UKC doing one of the following: 1) allow 1 hunt per club a month. 2) allow week night hunts. I think we would all benefit from either one of those. JMO

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the breed associations choose where breed days hunts will be hosted?

Sure....I can shed some light on this topic for ya. I wish you all could go back and read an article Steve Fielder wrote for Coonhound Bloodlines back in the 80's. It was titled "Is More Better?" I have it saved here somewhere but would take me a minute to find it. One of these days I'm going to look for it and reprint it. It was one of his best stories ever I think and hit the nail on the head!

It talks about how great things are going at a make believe coon club with the 3 or 4 well planned and well attended hunts they are putting on each year. Things are going so great they decide they want more hunts. So they start holding one a month. Or something like that. Pretty soon the members are overworked, the hunts aren't special, entries are down, titles on their dogs mean less, etc. The lesson being...more is not better.

Could UKC sell more $25 hunt licenses by opening it up? Sure. And I know there is a percentage of you that think UKC is only about the money. But the truth is, we are first and foremost concerned about the health of the sport and clubs being successful in the long run. That is why we limit the number of events we will license for a club.

But there is some merit to the idea of basing the number of events allowed on the success of the club. Allen and I have discussed that and will continue to do so. Thanks for the input!
