leaves on the trees!

Just wanted some feedback on how other peoples dogs do during the spring. How many coons do yall see with the leaves on the trees??? We run a track over 800 yards last night and dog treed in big poplar but couldn't see coon? Any tips on finding them with leaves on?

colored lens will help,but even with colored lens they still will not always look.

Here is what I do. First try to see if anything will look, and i do use a colored lens during summer time. If no luck, then I start with a bright light working the light up the trunk, checking the trunk and branch crotches. Then I work my way out as best as I can on each individual large branch. I look for color changes between gray and brown, and look at details to see if I can see a tail or ear.

Finally if all that fails, and if the surrounding tree cover allows, I will shine the tree as I lead the dog away.

What i really don't like is when the surrounding tree cover and canopy blocks my view from even shining the tree the dog(s) is treed on.

we also... will shake a grape vine if they are in the tree... take a rock or limb and beat on the tree while someone is shining the tree... doesn't always work but has some..

I do the same thing as mentioned above. Some times when I handle my dog I don’t tie her back I just lead her around with me while I'm shinning. With everything quite sometimes they will look better. Last week she made 18 trees I didn’t find the coon in 6 of them. 4 of them could have had a coon and 2 were defiantly slick

Yeah thats what the problem was last night trees around us was blocking from seeing all of the tree! I bought a coon squaller but looks like i wasted 12 bucks! Did get a turkey to gobble on the roost with it thought! LOL!!

Last night. 4 trees. With only the frosted lens on my sunfire. Saw 3 of em. Now that 4th was a jungle BUT it was also the smallest of the night. Prolly slick!!. They look at you 10 times better with leaves on than when they are off. I expect to see one in a couple min of looking. Only time im gonna beat,holler,pull vines,rattle chains or squall my brains out is on a hunt lol.

This is just my opinion but I don’t think any of them do. What’s the point? It works for predator hunters because they are being quit and have a call set up and even then they get busted. We are chasing this coon up a tree with dogs barking, breaking brush walking in and talking. It’s not like the coon does not know we are there. If he is going to look it will look. I had one the other night on a cast were a man spent 2 minutes shining with ever color he could carry with him. Then when he said everyone could look I turned my light up on high and he was looking at me with both eyes. Right where this man was just looking with a colored lens. They do work great for bugs.

I walk into all trees with my Amber on my G2 head.I can find almost everyone on the way into the tree.Best way ive seen to geta coon to stop lookin is shine my bright white light in his eyes.

Your right a lot of times they stop looking but sometimes it makes them look.

My buddy has the new laser torch pro and they look a lot more at the amber than green and red for us but like you said sometimes they just won't look but I'll climb a tree too if possible I don't like walking away wondering if it was there or not lol

Count may be off a tree or two but this week hunting a 1yr old pup 16 trees coon seen 1 tree slick, if they are up there we usually find them.

ive been haveing pretty good luck so far bout finding coons,ive found most of them in a crouch of the tree for some reason.it dont seem to me that many are looking,i keep shineing till i see hair.iam hunting a young dog that is about as accurate as any dog ive hunted in a while,he aint a hard tree dog but i dont like hard tree dogs anyhow.

The LED and Xenon bulbs on low settings will really make eyes glow ... squalling , shaking vines ,etc ... all helps .

I have found that many times the coon in rough trees will be on a limb with a line of sight to where they climbed and the dog is treeing .

I know these new lights are LED .. but they aren't the same as the handheld or cheaper LED's when it comes to how they make eyes glow ... and the Xenon bulbs are even better about it than those .

x2 They either look or they dont, lens dont make no difference. I f they dont look you got to make them look by squalling, shaking vines or beating on the tree. You make enough racket most of the time they are gonna look. N ow whether anybody in the cast is gonna see it is a different story.

very well could have been slick! been hunting my 6 yr old male and he has gotten bad about slicks but most the time i can tell by how he is treeing. When theres a coon he is mowing it down 120 B.p.m. and thats how he was after this chase. What do you do with a slick treeing dog and Please be honost? I want a dog that will tree coons not Trees! HE WILL BE GONE IF THIS KEEPS UP!!

YOU CANT FIND ALL COON THAT ARE THERE WITH LEAVES ON BUT ON TREES YOU ARE SURE IS SLICK TAKE A SWITCH OR NYLON LEASH AND GRAB HIM BY THE COLLAR SWITCH HIM AND MAKE HIM GO ON AND FIND THE COON THIS WILL HELP ACCURACY IN ABOUT 75% OF THE HOUNDS SOME YOU CANT HELP BUT THIS HELPS MOST
