Corkey; If I read everything right then you would no longer be able to hunt coons or whatever else w/ dogs around Madison,Wis. Hard to belive, sad day! Charlie Radtke

Posted by Corky Meyer on 04-20-2013 12:22 PM:

not Madison

if these resolutions make it thru the system, it would be state wide!

yes, a sad day, hunters not caring enough to get involved till it's too late.

You act like we don't care some of us have jobs that don't allow any time off I know you care for the cause deeply some of us care also but we can't have the time off to attend then you slam us I take offense to that I'll fight for the cause full time you pay my bills and child support and give me the benefits I receive now people have to work to make ends meet I wasn't handed a silver plater

Posted by kordog on 04-20-2013 01:03 PM:

the antis are counting on a lack of support from the opposition.the good news is if they win you will have more time for work. it really is that cut and dried . while they sit on their fat funded anti asses. houndsman and supporters will have to sacrifice to win .

Posted by jap's cr kennel on 04-20-2013 01:12 PM:

Well I have no choice work or get fired the DNR or whoever needs reps that you can express your concerns to if you cannot attend most antis full time jobs are being antis

next step

So what would be the next step we as houndsmen, and sporting dog owners need to to take from here?

Posted by Diggerman on 04-20-2013 02:28 PM:

If you cannot be there, and alot cannot, You NEED to support groups and organizations that have your same interest. Our club and some members individually support groups like the Wisc. bear hunters assoc. They are not the only ones but are the most active and well organized. Go on to their website and fill out a membership. Does anyone know of any other organization that is working for the houndsman?

Does that mean we can no longer hunt our hounds in dane county????

Posted by hootchandjaws on 04-21-2013 03:21 AM:

Is UKC involved at all in these groups? I bet if you can't chase wild life with dogs they will start to loose alot of money.. JMO. or PKC or anyother KC
DO they help defend our hunters rights? more numbers more power.

Would these laws include pheasant hunting and such? If that is the case I guarantee Pheasants Forever and probably some sporting goods stores like cabelas or bass pro or whatever you all have out there would be more than happy to go to bat for you as well. Just a thought. Will be a sad day if this stuff goes through. Keep us posted and keep up the good fight!

wake up call

ok let me try to add some light on this.

First, Wisconsin is the only state in the union that has the opportunity for everyone to vote on DNR rule changes. Out of over a million hunters and fisherman in the state, only about 5,000 people bothered to show up state wide. Of those 5,000 there is a growing group of anti-hunters voting against everything for the hunter and fisherman. These anti-hunters believe just as strongly in their cause and will show up and vote, not expecting others to deal with it for them.

The Spring Hearings happen annually and there is a meeting in every county in the state. The meeting averages 2-3 hours long, giving a opportunity to debate any proposed rule change and allowing you to propose new rule changes for consideration. These "resolutions" are then sent to Conservation Congress rules committees for consideration and inclusion in next years' Spring Hearings.

I've been actively involved in a conservation organization for the last 35 years, only retiring last year. All you have to do is look at California to see what is coming our way.

All the businesses and organizations don't have a enough money to influence these hearings. It takes all sportsmen and women to show up, vote, and voice their opinion. Your only cost would be 2-3 hours once a year.

I've gone to other meetings on behalf of coon hunters and other houndsmen for years, the expense coming out of my pocket and my time with my family. I paid it willingly, because I believed in the cause. I did occassionally receive donations towards gas money from a couple of the 50 coon clubs in the state. Thank you Wisconsin Sporting Dogs and Hebron Coon Club.

The organizations representing Coon Hunters in Wisconsin are the Wisconsin Sporting Dogs Assoc., Wisconsin Wildlife Federation, and Wisconsin Coon Hunters Assoc. . Bear hunting interests are represented by the Wisconsin Bear Hunters Assoc. .

By all means support these organizations that represent you in their legisilative efforts, but you must show up to represent yourself at the Spring Hearings. You are the only one who can! The numbers count one at a time, and the world is generally run by those that show up.

Corky,

I have been saying for several years that coon hunter apathy will be our down fall.

I would very much love to be proved wrong.

People need to join the Wisconsin Bear Hunter's Association - it's not just about bear hunting, we fight for all hunting rights. We are a large organization with a lot of legislators behind us and working with us. The more people working together, the more things we can accomplish. Here's the website: www.wbha.us.com/

It is easy to think and say "so and so organization will step in and stop it" But look at the West Coast. California banned hunting with hounds and either Oregon or Washington state have limited or no hunting with hounds. If we don't take care of whats happening in our own back yard, why would any kennel club or retailer help out? With Wisconsin becoming more and more leased land for Quality Deer Management, more and more people are getting against free casting dogs for hunting. We have a lot of great clubs that fight for us hound hunters, but they need our help to. Case in point, the Wisconsin Bear Hunters membership numbers are less than 3,000 people. The days of turning a blind eye and deaf ear to the problems at hand and thinking so and so will step in are gone! The anti's are figuring out how to get their foot in the door and have got one elected to the board in Dane county. Not enough hunters were there for the vote and a lot of the antis were there to vote her in! They would of got a 2nd in if they knew there was a 2nd vote that night. The elected anti already said she is against using dogs on any wildlife and wants to make changes to how we manage the wildlife in Wisconsin!

Dave, the Arthur club would like to apply for a silver membership. Could you post a address on where to send the check to? Thanks.

Corky,

I heard about this last weekend, at a hunt. Still being new to Wisconsin, I hadn't even heard about these hearings. So I still have a couple questions:

Is the hearing basically a motion for the legislature to vote on a ruling??? I'm assuming that these hearings, aren't establishing law, but providing direction or desire to law makers.

And out of curiosity... the hearing you attended and/or others you heard about, was the argumnet against hunting with dogs, mostly supported by anti-hunters, land owners in general, or other sportsman?

Thanks for all the information!

Q & A

not to legislators per say but to the DNR Board as advisory to make rule changes, legislators do look at the numbers when it takes a law change, DNR board makes rule changes that implement laws.

“And out of curiosity... the hearing you attended and/or others you heard about, was the argumnet against hunting with dogs, mostly supported by anti-hunters, land owners in general, or other sportsman?”

sometimes all 3... take coon hunting during deer season rule, deer hunters vote every time to keep us out of the timber during "their deer season" and the antis jump on, some land owners jump on because of trespass problems. on the other hand farmers want us to hunt all year long.

The 1st post has a list of resolutions that were submitted at county’s listed, everyone has a right to submit a “resolution for consideration at their county of residence. If a resolution passes in their county it goes to the conservation congress standing committee that deals with the subject. The author can show up( and anyone else) to speak to the resolution. The committee decides to fwd the resolution for consideration on next year’s spring hearings, as an “advisory question, voted on state wide.

My good friend “Two Toes” is President of the Wisc. Association of Sporting dog clubs, if the Assoc. wants to hold a meeting to train folks how and when to get involved, I’d be happy to be there to help in any way I can,( if anyone shows up)

what are you going to train them on

the main people from the big 3 org.(wi bear hunters wi coon hunters and the sporting dogs need to get together and get on the same page and start working as one
now i know two toes is the pres of the sporting dogs
al lobner is the pres. of the bear hunters
not sure who is pres for coon hunters

i have been a member of all three for the last few years and know that to preserve our rights the best chance is for them to work at one and not pass blame

Has the WASD done anything on right to retrieve? If so we should also support them more. I guess I don't know of any organization currently pushing or have pushed "right to retreive".

done anything????????

any org. is only as strong as it's active members. just paying dues does not get anything done.

look at what the HSUS did in mad town on the night of the hearings.

how the game works is how many people show up when it counts. orginazations still only count as one vote.

training? how to get a group (Club members, huntin buddies) together and effectivly work an issue.

stop waiting for someone to do it for you.
