collars, loose/tight

one of my dogs came back without her collar and another time she came back without her tracking collar which i found in a fox den. i think i prefer to have collar a little loose so that they can slip them off if they get hung.
what do you think on this?

I prefer mine a little snug but have seen tree runners and jackers that need them loose.

i like to get a couple fingers under it but not tight enough to
choke him dwn.the collars are worth more than the old dog.

lol lee that made me laugh ill give u a bucket of collars for that male u brought up this summer heck i might even throw in a leash

If I can stick my hand under the collar its loose enough for me to tight of a collar I've seen it hold back a dogs voice but they were really tight.

I know I for sure don't want my garmin collar coming off. If they're wearing that collar I will get to them. The tighter the collar the less likely something will get under it and snag a dog up. That's just my opinion. I make them snug, just tight enough to get them from Sliding up and down the dogs neck.

I ain't used a shock collar in five or six years I try and do alternatives to break them seen to meny dogs that were collar broke not really broke the tracker I do it just like a reg. Collar got a dog rightnow though I need a e collar on sometimes he want come when called.

If I use a ecollar ill put it on two hours or so befor I hunt so he forgets its the collar that is doing the shocking

I think it just looks better if a guy wanting to breed to your male sees he ain't got a e collar on but then agien I wanna see his female hunt also if he wants to breed usely if both are coondogs you can make some type of coondog out of the pups may just be average but I'd rather have a honest coon treer then a potlicker

I prefer my dogs to be able to slip both kennel collar and garmin. I lost a nice young female that was making a fine hound because collar wasn't able to be slipped. If you ever have to cut down the hound you've spent countless hours honing their skills then you might agree with me it's a sad and gut wrenching thing to realize you screwed up and a got your dog hung or worse someone else's dog. calling that man to tell him his dog got hung the same night she treed her first single all alone and that it was my fault was one on the hardest things I ever had to do. To elaborate a little she worked a hard track for over a half hour then slammed treed all alone on a creek bank had a mr. coon sitting up I tied her to the only tree around which was the tree with mr coon, i walked back to truck to get the stick she was blowing the top out of it half way back all went quiet. I go running in to tree and coon has jumped out and is swimming the creek while dog jumped over bank to get it and broke her neck. 100% my fault will never happen to another dog I hunt again maybe now it won't happen to yours either

old house.i enjoyed that tommy still scratch his head she want tree with another dog.lol there dogs.

ive always leave the collars loose on my dogs.i had a dog that didnt come in one night,i was tracking him and he was in a gulf called devils backbone and i didnt want to walk in their him not treeing.i finally went to the house thinking he would finally come home directly,the next day i started tracking him and he was in the same place,this went on for 3 days and on the fourth day he finally came home and i got to looking him over and i could see where he was snake bite on the throat. if i had his collar on even snug i think he would have choked to death.i tighten the collar just tight enough were i can get my four fingers underneath it and ive never lost a collar on a dog.

Everyone I run with likes to have tight collars and there have been no instances of a dog hanging since. I believe that is the point of discussion regarding "tight v. loose" collars. I have my opinion and you have yours, and mine isn't going to change because of the likes of you.

i agree with magorian, man should gone and checked on his dog, regardless of collar. there is no way i'm leaving a dog any night if i can get a signal.
if the collar is loose enough to put a finger, or two under it then it's loose enough for a stick to run under it and hang a dog.
i might change my opinion if you convince me your opinion is better than mine. at this point, my collars are loose, so that they can be slipped off if the dog is hung up in a hole, a limb or snake bite and i want my dog to be comfortable. i know i wouldn't want anything tight around my neck, even if i was a dog.
