Planning a hunt in Michigan need more info

Every year we plan an out of state hunt and this year we have decided to hunt in Michigan. I have already gotten some good info from some nice folks on here. But was looking to try and get a littel more befor we set it in stone .I was really trying to narrow down a area and the best time to come up there I have read the trappers guide and it says that a non resident can not hunt till nov 15 I was wandering if that is true for dog or just trapping. But for the most part im trying to get a lot of different opinion on were the very best coon hunting is that way we can make a good decision. Any and all info well be greatly appreciated.

A furtakers license is required to hunt coons in Mi. They will not even sell a non resident furtakers until Nov 15th, which by the way is also the opening day of gun deer season. The license costs $150. Me and a buddy bought one last year, got all our money back back plus motel costs when we sold the hides and plan to do it again this year. That was the best hunting trip ever for me and I'm not about to spill the beans on where we went but a little research will open many doors. Where we went was a coonhunting paradise and we had it all to ourselves at night. Granted, during the day that place was a huge sea of hunter orange but once the sun sat, we had it all to ourselves.

Jim...

Was that on public land? And you only purchased 1 license for the two of you? I too would like to take an out of state trip (I am in NC). I had not thought about using the hides to help offset costs. Great info! Thanks.

150 per person. You really gotta want to hunt in Mi to cough up all they want out of you in that state. But then I'd pay twice that if I had to.

We hunted all stateland. I know a lot of landowners in Montcalm county and they aren't brave enough to turn a dog loose on their own land during gun season. But state land is a whole nother matter.

you all will have to double your take this year,,fur price forcast came out saying prices heading down this fall..

Posted by Larry Atherton on 06-08-2012 03:42 PM:

Fur is a commodity similar to oil, gold, pork bellies, wheat, and corn, etc.

The only difference is fur is a luxury item, and many commodities such as oil, wheat, and corn aren't so much a luxury.lol

Stock market up fur prices more likely up; stock market down fur market will definitely be down.

Larry, the one and only disappointment we had on that trip was the size of the coons. We were expecting those giants like they have around Marcellus. But of the 38 we killed, none weighed 30, only a couple made it into the 20's and they averaged the same as our basic Indiana coons. But they do run up there. They run alot harder than ours.

If you go to far north you may get into Porcupine areas . May not ruin your hunt but you won't like it much. Mostly in the upper third of the lower peninsula approximately and I assume all of the upper . None in the lower 2/3 of the lower penisula unless you may be borderline to their area .

LOL Jim, Lee took you hunting where I showed him Good hunting, some of it a bit rough, but plenty of coon there. I haven't found a place in Montcalm county yet where I can't turn a dog loose. Maybe when yer up this year, I can take you some spots I haven't showed Lee yet. By the way, I love hunting with your old hinting buddy. You should hear him sing Amish Paradise. I have never laughed so hard.

Don't over look the Thumb area for coon hunting plenty of state land and some nice coon. With the deer hunters putting out tons of bait it gives a person some nice races. Good luck in your hunt this fall I your planning on hitting the thumb area look me up.

No such thing as a possum hunting license! And he charged you $25! A fur Harvester's is $15, a small game is about the same.

I was there last week too. Treed around 30 coons in 2 nights. Treedaround 3 that would go 22 -23 pounds. I take a trijp to Michigan every year in October.
