Not every dog knows to swim behind the coon (persued game) unless taught by an older dog.

could a coon have stayed in the water that long was there 15 min atleast and if would have came out she shoulda picked it back up on other side
quote:It is called Water Barking. I hunt in the marsh where there is a miriad of small to not so small creeks. I have seen many many grown dogs do it. That's why mine are all trained with a trained dog. I have seen some fellows walk and bog out there to get their dog after an hour or two of that stuff. Now that's funny. You might even think they were treed if there was anything taller than a blade of grass to tree on. Some just sit down and bawl a "Come get me bark" all night. Keep hunting it around water and don't go get it till the next day or two or train it with water dogs.

Thanks sure did sound nice haha
Wifes grandpa had a blue english female that a coon couldn't get away from. We watched her swim the cove of a large lake behind a coon and then tree it on the other side. I started out hunting a blue english male that was started with her. One night sounded like he was treed running and then just stopped and aprox 3 minutes later he blowed up treed on the side of a pond. He had the meat and the guys I was hunting with their dogs didn't know what was going on. He died before I could get one trained to swim with him.

I use to go to a man trailing seminar in eastern Okla. The man that put it on would lay a track to a pond that had tall hills on three sides of it. He would walk the track into the pond, sit around for a while to let his scent get strong in there, then walk straight up the side of one of the hills and walk back home.
He would put the most adavnced handler and blood hound on the track every six months he did this at the seminare and never had anyone that had enough since to take there dog to the top of the hill and cut the track away from the water. They would waller around down in all that scent till we got threw laughing and went and picked them up.
They scent is stronger at the water and they think they are back tracking by leaveing strong scent for a weaker track out. If you don't have a dog to teach it leash it up and make a big circle around the pond or what ever till the dog hits the track leaveing the place. Let it lead you away far enough it won't go back. Then cut it loose again.
OR ir you have a good handle on your dog tell it to get the ___ out of there and walk the way it need to go to most likely hit the same coon. The leash thing is better becouse you have more control on getting it back on the same coon.

The infamous "GEASEL" part goose part weasel, excellent on land and water. Can really make a dog look bad at times. I have ran many of them. I think alot of others have ran them too, but won't admit to it. Funny thing about these critters is you never really see them, but you know they're out there.

This is a rerun of last March and i don't have any fresh video yet this year. Even though they have already swum a smaller river last week and it cost me all night long getting the back. I wish they would not swim the big water either but if they would not persue across little 50 yard wide creeks I might as well not hunt.
On this video they had trailed out to the end of that marsh before they jumped and they were bringing that coon back for the second time. A squeky toungue pup headed him off and made him take to the river right where an alligator was waiting. You can hear the old dog catch the coon and when I walk up there the dog and the coon go under you can see the alligator on the right hand side of the screen next to the bank. The dog drowned
the coon and got out without getting ate by the Gator.

There is always the possibility of a beaver. A lot of young dogs like them.
I have seen hounds tree mink. If you walked the dog all the way around the pond without a strike, my bet would be she ran a mink. I have also seen mink over 1 mile from water.

It was a "Geasel", I just know it. I know we got them here, I am almost sure they live anywhere a coon would live. They love to fool with them young hounds and sometimes the old broke dog. Dang pesky critters. (:
