Where did I go wrong? Please help!

I have been coon hunting most of my life. Although I will hunt any breed if it suits me I have owned more walkers that I liked than any other breed. I have a 10 year old son that was given a black and tan pup. He has been hunting him hard and just recently won a youth hunt with him. The dog is 1 1/2 year old.
I have another son that is 2 1/2. He is wanting his own dog something awful bad. The problem is when I ask him what breed he wants he keeps saying a Boo Tick. No amount of bribing or bregging can get him to change his mind.
I don't understand how a man can have 2 boys and both are going down the wrong road.
Some one Please help me!

Well you can be proud off one thing your boys want to hunt hounds whith dad they have not been infected buy tv antis or video games thats good .. Here is a few ideas get your boy an english bluetick it shoud hunt simalar to your walkers and leson the blow . Or get a good single reg older dog that is bluetick colord and reg but you know it is half walker .. Or if you must buy a pr reg bluetick just hunt whith a few and buy what you like also i recomend ricard casey in Mo he sends people hard hunting bluetick dogs and stands behind his dogs and garentees um. Good luck.

I had an old man tell me to hunt what I liked to look at and not worry about what anyone thinks. I like the looks of a boo tick better than any and my english dogs are blue. If they like hounds and want to hunt with their daddy dont worry about the color of the dog. What more can a man ask for than his sons to go hunting and spend time with him. JMHO

thats my opinion too, too many younguns out there being lazy sittin around on the couch and playing games all the time, keep in mind they are little theyll choose the winning walkers someday!!

From- Smoky Mtn. Black & Tans

This is just my opinion, but it seems like the older boy of yours is headed the right way!! Nothing wrong with him hunting a good black dog. Give him a big pat on the back from me for his youth win with his black dog. WAY TO GO BUDDY, KEEP IT UP!! I will always support my fellow coonhunter, especially a fellow black and tan hunter.

well you can try something like i did LOL

im a "ladycoonhunter" as my username states( and i had the name long before the whole "use your real name" issue came up) and i introduced my ex husband to coonhunting as well as my fella of 5 years now. neither new a lick bout coonhounds. My latest just knew he liked the look of a "blue" dog. I LOVE my "engrish" dogs. (if you have ever owned one you know why i spell it that way LOL).
So i showed my new fella that English also come in "blue" LOL. hes now hooked on english.

get the boy a ticked up walker or Go ENGLISH ...they come in any color LOL

Who cares what color dogs they want. Just enjoy the hunting with them because before to long they will be going with the kids from school their buddies from work the guys and gals they meet at the hunts and you will see your hunt time with them limited.I hunt boo tics but I tell you my son or daughter pulls up with a coondog in their truck and ask me to go the last thing I care is what color dog is in the box I'm gettin in the truck and going but guarantee if its not boo I'm going give them a hard time and enjoy every minute with them.I've been beat by all the breeds and won against all of them too.........Tom P.S. Tell that boy of yours congratulations on his win and great job with that black dog!!!!!!!!!!!

Really who cares what they hunt, just be glad they are hunting. You try to push them into what YOU like is gonna only hurt them not help them. Be a dad and help them with the dogs THEY want to hunt and I am sure when they get older they will appreciate it alot more than you pushing what kind of dogs YOU want them to hunt.

Ill just be happy if my kids take up coon hunting. I wont care what dog they want as long as they enjoy theirselves and the sport. Thats whats most important.

You did'nt go wrong.Give yourself and them 2 boys a pat on the back.Hunt with them while you can and dont worry about the dogs color.I've been a diehard bluetick man for 25 years.I have 1 son w/ a walker gyp and the other hunts a redbone.I wondered the same thing you did. Then I realized it did'nt matter. What does matter is those boys are hunting and spending time with dad.So, I say "well done" to you and keep up the good work.Lowell

i agree...i dont think you went wrong anywhere! you got 2 younguns interested in running hounds!

if you can have more dogs, id get em whatever color they wanted and keep them interested and happy..

i hunted with a jet bred blue tick at the last hunt i was at...boy that was a really nice hound...didnt fit my hunting style...but he was a really nice hound...independent and very accurate...it was REAL cold that night and hunting wasnt the best...he really shined that night because it was a bad night..i couldnt catch him because he was getting first strike pretty much every drop...and real independent taking first tree most every time...

i just dont care for a dog that cold nosed and determined to work out that old of a track...i rather walk a mile than stand there a half hour or hour lol...but in thin coon or tough huntin nights, a dog like that will shine...

LOL well all I can say is get him a good Blue dog I assure you there are some , Just as there are in every breed!!
I aslo echo the sentiments of others; be glad they want to hunt! I think I ruined my chance with my son by dragging him way to often and way to long when he was to young. O well live and learn.

The desire to win hasnt fully kicked in yet. Young kids and old men have something in common. They like to sit around and jabber all day and night. No better way to do that than when ole blue takes 4 hours to get treed

Posted by Blair4 on 04-22-2011 09:59 PM:

it don't matter

If the dog trees coon and gets the boys out huntin it don't matter the color . My oldest boy has a walker female I would love to shoot even though I hunt walker dogs I can't stand her But I suck it up cause he likes her.
