best way to break a mean dog on tree?
I have a 7 year old walker male. hunted alone all his life. when he was younger, pup til 2..he had a male littermate. the guy that owned him would load both male dogs up..and only drop one at a time. did this til he was 2. Well.. i got him now and that dog is mean as he'll on the tree and off. i cant even walk him by a male dog without him getting all swollen up on them. He doesnt mind a female tho. whats the best to break him of this, without keeping him from getting it done in the woods?

if he was doing this all his life, you won't break him. hunt him alone or put him out of his misery..

I'm not expert on the matter, but being seven years old I'm going to say you're fighting a losing battle. You could always castrate him I guess, but I don't know if that would do any good. Probably the only sure fire way to keep him from getting mean, is to put him down.

i cant put down a dog that is a tree`n machine tho. I will just keep huntin him by hisself or with females i guess. I did think bout tryin to get his stuff cut off..but he is that old like you said.. i dont think it will help much anymore.

this will probably NOT be the popular reply, but here goes...
a good obedience and desensitizing routine could work wonders for you (note i say COULD)... if you're willing to put in the time, it may be worth it if you'd really like to hunt him with other males or just generally improve his demeanor around them. Otherwise, it appears in your above post, you're OK with hunting him alone or with females, which is fine too
I, personally, would work real hard with small pieces of hot dog and on a leash. Get him used to giving YOU his FULL attention any time you ask him for it. I'm talking sitting in front of you and looking into your eyes. This will take some time, but it's nice to have and looks really nice when it's perfect
Anyhoo, every dog that has a distraction issue (be it with other dogs, small animals, what have you) will have a threshold of HOW close he can be to that thing before he stops hearing what YOU have to say. You need to find that threshold, and then work work work JUST outside of it, decreasing the distance between you guys and the other male over time. Eventually, hopefully, he will learn the other dog is no threat/of no concern, and listening to you instead is A. Good. Thing.
Sorry that was long-winded, just my advice... it helped with my pit bull That being said, with the uncontrolled nature of being at the tree, he may never be fully trustworthy, no matter how much time you spend on him.

reply
that reply sounds more like it. it isnt the dogs fault he was kept in a kennel and hunted as if it was a competition. And I only owned one dog and hunted him by hisself..not need to hunt coondogs in packs in my opinion.never got into competition hunting and if a buddy did tag along every now and then..just always seemed they had females. He isnt ALWAYS mean on the tree.. it seems he is MOST mean when a male dog backs his tree. He is 95% an along dog on the tree anyway.I wil try and work on that. I appreciate the time to reply.

Plan on workin with the shocker a little more. he never has been ran with a shocker in his life. never has had to.

When you do start with the E-Collar, Put it around his belly and not around the neck .. This way it has alot more effect and it turns him around away from another hound on the tree.. Around the Neck and they will think the Other Hound Bit him..
Eather way its very tricky to Shock one Hound with another one on the tree also.. A Bigger Train Crash can happen real Quick !!

5 Things to stop a fighting dog.......
#1) Call the DOG WHISPER !!!
#2) Put a shock collar on him and use it!
#3) Hunt him alone or with females!
#4) Have all his teeth pulled and feed him canned dog food the rest of his life.
OPTIONAL:
#5) Put a bullet between his eyes!
One of these should work !
I have an old NiteCh (was titled b4 I got him) that is a little ouchy with male dogs. He is 10 going on 11. I oupted for #3. He was too good to put down.
Number 3
I think I'll go with option 3 lol. But I will try the collar first. My buddy owned Banner, 94 autumn oaks winner, and that was a mean ol dog on the tree too.

you cant you either have to have the mind set i don't care if i mess him up or hunt him with females i have broke 3 males that was mean with success if he is tree dog enough you wont mess him up electricity and other methods of training will work he might go little backwards for a while good luck pm me if you have any more concerns
I wouldn't mess with him being mean on the tree till I had it out of him every were else. I haven't had luck with the e-collar on dog fight. I have allways found it best to handle it up close and personal. Most of it is dominance. You are the leader. Lead it isn't up to them to decide who is the boss. You are and if some one is jumping on anything with out you telling it to they are invadeing your space.
Her is something I have done in the past as a last resort before killing a food agressive dog.
Put a choke chain on ( herm and Springer) so it doesn't break. Hook to long line, throw over the limb of t tree, put food down, get close to the food and when it tries to snap it gets hung. I leave it there till it is pretty weak. Then drop it. If youdid a good job it will lay there a second, grasp a breath, get up and puke. I have never had this not to work. But like I said the only time I have done it is when it didn't work I would of had to kill the dog.
They bite a kid near the food or for any other reason here they die BUT the kids here are tought what to do and not do with the dogs too.
You could do the same thing just lead a male dog up instead of food. or both

Mean
He isn't mean whatsoever on the chain around people or other dogs... It's when u put him on the lead and he knows it's hunting time is when he gets a lil snippy with males. He is the nicest dog n the world around people pups and females. Just males get him going. He listens.. Whenever he flares up around a male I let him know that I won't tolerate that and he stops. He just gets Ill when a male backs his tree and we come n with the lights on.

Put the boots to him. Mean for any reason is not to be tolerated. Definitely not something to be bred. They are never to old to learn what isn't tolerated. Pull his fangs. If he gets chewed on a few times he might decide it's not fun to be mean.

I wouldn't worry about it if it was me.I had one like that oe time.Never bothered me any at all.But then I hunt by myself all the time.Unless I got to a hunt then I just carried a different dog.Mean dogs don't bother me any as long as they do everything else I like.
HECK PUT HIM IN THE HUNTS LOL. BUT ON THE SERIOUS SIDE IF HE WAS A PUP YOU MIGHT BREAK HIM BUT AT THAT AGE YOU WONT.

Do the possom trick. Cut the dogs stomach that he jumps on open and smother him in it. Works for breaking some off of possom. lol
I got a redgeback that will break it from the habbit. lol
No just kidding but I wouldn't let it in the woods with any other dog unless I was honest with the owner of the other dog about it being mean. Some people that get there dog whiped at the tree will whip the owner of the dog that did it. I know a couple around here that would shoot another mans dog for that.
It is there fault if they know about it BUT it is your fault if they don't. Then you have the ones that would sue.
I would cut him. You don't want him breeding anyway and it might help.
