need help on a pup

i have a pup that just turned 6 months old and is running and treeing with the old dogs and thursday night for the first time she struck a track byherself and started trailing it and my old dogs went and checked it and come back and thats never good... she did this 2 times that night and them i took her walking in the woods on sunday and she run a deer out of my honey hole...i never seen the deer but i know thats what it is... my question is do i shock her and hope at that young age she will still run a coon, do i leave her till she gets older and hope i can break her then or my last resort do i put her up till shes old enought to get jucie to her...

keep huntin her with the old dogs, she is too young to understand right now and she will naturally come to realize that you want her to tree coons, because thats the only thing you shoot out to her , when she gets close to a year put the juice to her

yeah i agree but i would prolly hold off on the juice till 18 months or so. i would show her my dissatisfaction when she runs off game but i would do it gently.

i agree also but it all depends on your dogs personality, if she is mature enough to take the juice at a year old then give it but if she is not very mature and is kinda timid i would hold off like mikeo said

I would do it right now !
The more they get away with it , the harder it is to break them.

But , understand this.........

YOU DON'T HAVE TO SHOCK HER ON HIGH !

Just take her out and find a deer. Walk her across the track , and see what she does. Don't wait for her to get excited enough to bark ( it'll take more juice if you do ). When she starts smelling it , juice her just enough to make it uncomfortable. ( don't say a word to her ) She'll think about it a minute and probably try it again. Hit her again. After a few times , she will change her mind. Like I said , don't say nothing. Let her decide the scent is what's making it " uncomfortable " for her.

I dissagree if you do it now she is most likely too young to know the difference, i mean that she may associate getting shocked with EVERY scent in the woods not just that deer, where after she knows what you do for sure want her to do she will learn when she gets shocked its not just for running game but that its for that deer

If the dogs not smart enough to know its getting shocked for the deer then do you really want to spend the time on it?

a dog when they are young will run anything because they are bred to do that, they don't know what they are running when they are just pups, they need time to grow and learn what they are running, they don't ever know what a deer or coon or opossum or any animal even looks like when they first smell it. they need to be old enough to understand that its that specific scent they are getting shocked for, and that they aint getting shocked just for running games.

so if you jucie 1 in the kennel for barking she will never bark
again?juice it on highest setting why they have more than
1 setting is beyond me

I don't want to give them the time to learn what the junk smells like, thats why ya rock their world at an early age.

and one of the greatest hunters alive today, John Wick tells and trains by never hitting a dog on a high setting, he only uses enough juice to make them know they are getting touched, he told me to my face that if you shock a dog with enough juice to make him bark that its WAY too much, i don't know about you but this man knows alot more than i do about hunting and that im pretty sure he knows the best way to train a dog.

Please Do the the Yard Work Excerise's with the Shocker First (Sit, Stay, Come) !!

Let her know what to expect when she does'nt listen,
Let her get used to the Tone Setting on your shocker ...

She may be broken on off Game with just the tone of the Collar..

I use the Tone to Call the hounds in when their out of Pocket, on Posted Property or When they are nearing a Road ..

When they hear the tone their to Return to Me as fast as posible or the next Tone may be followed by a ZAP..

Plus try Hunting her in the Morning in Heavy Deer Areas when You KNOW when She is doing Wrong..

Good luck

sent you a pm let me know how it works out.

Posted by Majestic Tree H on 11-06-2008 03:26 PM:

One of our pups was sent to a Virginia Trainner "S-M" .. Well this turned out to the worst for the pup.. The "Trainner" had an older Tri Trainer "The Plug in Type" and only had the High Plug..

Well he was using a old Check Hound while training this pup, And I'l add that this pup was a Cold Nosed and very advanced for her age .. Anyway everytime that the pup would open on track and his Check Hound would'nt, "He Fried Her" !!!

Well this pup was brought back to me in Total Shock and would'nt leave my feet. It took well over a month to even get her to Run a Track and Open again. She is back in full "Get it Done" again and just needs a Finishing touch..

no collar?

so what do you do if you dont have a collar to juice or shock them with? Because some people say dont hit your dog, and then on here alot of people are saying dont yell at them, so i guess i dont know what you would do if you dont have a shocking collar?

If you start working with them young enough , taking them for walks and stuff , you won't hardly ever need a shock collar. I've had mine for over 15 years and used it maybe 5 or 6 times.
A light switch does wonders when they're young.
