Dual Purpose Dogs...Coon, Bear, or Both?

JUST WONDERING WHAT YA'LL HUNTED.

JUST COON

JUST BEAR

BOTH

WE'VE BEEN SERIOUSLY THINKING ABOUT GETTING INTO BEAR HUNTING AS WELL AS COON HUNTING.

DO YOU PREFER A DOG THAT WILL DO BOTH?

JUST WONDER WHAT EVERYONE'S TAKE ON IT IS.

I tried both, but while the dogs were after a bear I was in there pulling mine off a coon.

Its hard to get one the will pass up a coon, grub up a bear track, then coon hunt him at night.

We dont get to bear hunt much so thats part of our problem. Three hour drive to do it legal. Its alot of fun, it just isn't feasible for me.

i thought dual purpose had something to do with a bench show?

A good bear dog will stick out a track through thick and thin.

I dont care for a coondog that operates that way.

in PA

if your dog runs Bear, it ends up looking at the business end of a shotgun or rifle. It's illegal in PA to use dogs on Bear. But...I do know quite few coondogs that will in fact do both here in PA. Iffn ya don't get caught, it ain't illegal, seems to be the thought, lol.

I've seen a couple of dual purpose hounds. I dont think they wanted them to be dual purpose but they sure treed bears.I dont care anything about a bear dog.The bears run to fast and far for me.They can cover some territory.

OKAY....

WE WOUDLNT USE THE SAME DOGS ON COON AS WHAT WE DO ON BEAR.

IT'D BE THE SAME BLOODLINES, BUT NOT THE SAME DOGS.

I GUESS THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN THE BETTER QUESTION.

I've been using the same dogs to run coon and bear both for over 30 years. Alot of people who think you can't , just don't know and are going by hearsay.
Yes , you will tree a coon every now and then. But not near as often as you'd think.

Yall also have alot more bear than some areas. Coon too!!

I've looked for days and never found a track. We have about 50% chance of finding a runnable track. Not hear say, been say

Went to bear camp on Sept. 14th. Treed one on Sept. 16th. Didn't get another run till Sept. 22nd. Found 4 tracks and had 3 baits hit all week. Treed 2 coon and 1 porky in between.
Usually , the dogs take the track or come back. Sometimes a young dog will break off and tree a coon or porky.
However , it is important to point out that we make our dogs mind and we can usually tell if they are working a track or just going hunting when we put them down.
Some dogs we can just freecast , but most we can't. We have to put them down on a track or bait.
The freecasters are about like any other top hound , few and far between.

And , I should add that Frank Giddings came looking to buy one of the dogs in our pack. He IS a coondog !

Christy , call Frank and ask him about a dog named Major. Major had been layed up for about 3 months and didn't look good that night. But , ask Frank what he'd heard about that dog.

I would have to agree with Bob here but would add,not all coon bred dogs will make what I call a bear dog. They may run a bear but that doesnt mean they are a bear dog.Pack dogs are fairly easy to come by,but the true run at the front to catch, smart, hair pullin put the presure on ,bear dogs are few and far between.

just coon, BUT!!!

would love to have somebody get some of these and try them on bear, we have some pups now that would be just right for somebody to get for bear dogs. both parents are good quick track dogs with th desire to catch, especially the father and his brothers . and they have been this way since 5-6 months. i think they would have the brains to not lose their brains too easily as i've heard some bloodlines have the tendancy to do . GOOD HUNTIN EVERYONE!!

Posted by Mike Jones on 09-28-2006 04:21 AM:

Both

Breed a line that, crossed out right, make as good a bear or cat(Lion) dog as coondog. Some may disagree but if it's in em it's in em. Got two pups being groomed to bear hunt now....let ya know how that goes.

Christy...my opinion is if you have a bloodline that can produce dogs that are good at both fine and good, but like you said on down the post, I wouldn't want to use my coondogs on bear too much. Makes for some really long nights when they start running them things at night while you're trying to coonhunt!

Posted by Redwood Hounds on 09-28-2006 06:15 PM:

Where we live out here in California, coon don't live up north where we bear hunt, and there are no bear down where we coon hunt. So our dogs are used on BOTH.

We have a few dogs that have TOP coon-hound bloodlines, such as a Dizzy son, Hardwood Henry Grandson, MI Swamprooster redtick, and a few others, and they all exel on bear. They do an okay job on coon, but what dog preferes a 15 pound coon over a 300 pound bear? They just dont show the same kind of heart coon hunting as they do bear hunting.

I would much rather be bear hunting than, coon huntng, and so would my dogs, but they do what they are asked. I will admit, that it takes more patience and a better nose to tree coon consistantly. But you need a dog with lots of endurance and a lot more heart to stick it out and tree bear consistantly.

We run grey fox, and bobcat as well, with great resultsl, I guess the dogs just prefer being up in the mountains after quicker game (bear, fox, bobcat) than down in the valley tinkering around trying to find a coon.

I know I new here but I thought I would put in my opinion on this.... I consider my dogs big game dogs, bear, lions, bobcats, but they LOVE to coonhunt also. Where I hunt we don't have a problem catching bears when coonhunting and coons when bear hunting. I have heard that a lot of dogs don't want to hunt in the dark so much after bearhunting but my dogs remember their coonhunting ancesters and go nuts over coons. We also have 3 dogs, two TW and a Bluedog that come from coonhunting parents on the east side of the country who have been big game-ing it real well..

THE REASON WHY I ASKED...

IS THIS.

WE'VE BEEN STUDDING OUR MALE OUT. WHAT WE THOUGHT WAS MOSTLY FOR COON.

WELL, THERE HAVE BEEN A COUPLE PEOPLE THAT BEAR HUNT GET PUPS AND SOME HAVE BRED FEMALES, AND THEY ARE JUST ASTONISHED AT HOW THEIR PUPS/DOGS ARE DOING.

THAT'S WHY I ASKED TO FIND OUT IF MOST OF THE PEOPLE ON THIS BOARD WERE JUST STRICTLY COON HUNTERS BECAUSE WE WANT TO GET THE WORD OUT ABOUT HIS BEAR PUPS AS WELL.

I hear that they Rock River Frank dog's pups were turning out to be nice bear dogs. R.S. was telling me that they were breeding Frank to alot of Beardog females and getting as good or better results than the pups on coon. Aint Frank in Sid or Skeeter's breeding?

FRANK IS SID'S GRANDFATHER ON HIS MAMA'S SIDE.

MAYBE THE FRANK IS PUTTING THE BEAR IN THEM, AND THE NITRO IS PUTTING THE COON IN THEM.

BECAUSE TO HEAR THE OWNERS TELL IT, THEY WILL DO WHAT YOU PUT THEM ON WHETHER IT'S COON, BEAR OR BOTH.
