training ugly stick pups

I have an ugly stick male pup that's 10 months old. Just wondering what kind of experiences others have had training ugly pups. Both good things and bad. Tendencies, flaws, hang ups etc

Mine has no drive to hunt. She follows me around the woods eating grass. She is almost 3 yrs old one more month and she gets culled. Good luck to you

The dam is double e's bigwoods swans penny. I don't understand the eating grass she gets the same food as my other dogs and they don't do it. She used to lick herself on the back legs till she had no hair left. The vet said it was a nervous thing guessing the grass might be the same thing

I have a 2 year old male that I raised from a pup. Just toted him to the woods and put in the work. He was treeing with older dog at 6 months. Treed his first solo at 8 months. Most I know are natural starting dogs. Just keep him in the woods. Thanks for an awesome cross Mr. Church.

Mine treed his first coon at 5.5 months solo. He treed a few more by himself but it's like he has gotten tree happy and don't want to actually hunt for one. If he does trail for a long ways it's always slick. I have never seen him trail one far and actually have the meat

Hmm. Mines accuracy is one of his better traits. I'm stumped.

with all these leaves on its hard to see coon sometimes, but if he is slick switch his rear a little ( not beat) and cut him right off that tree thats slick and see what he does

Usually when it is slick for sure, he just pulls up treed. The other night I made one drop. I cut him loose he tracked for maybe 20 yards and treed. Didn't see anything so I sent him on. He ran down to an empty bucket and treed in a little tree about 30 yards from the feeder. Didn't track at all and it was slick as a ribbon. I was gonna switch him but he decided to leave. He opened up again and trailed it 766 yards and treed up a big oak tree. Didn't see anything but I could've missed it easy because the leaves was really thick. So then I just hooked him up and left. He goes through phases where he will pull up and tree 3-4 times a night and all of a sudden he will trail one and tree a ways off. I've never seen a coon when he tracks it far though so they could be slick too. He has actually treed 2 coons solo where he just pulled up treed without trailing

ive never hunted buckets or bait besides bear hunting and im not passing judgement because think they could be great tool for young dog. but have heard lotta stories like this and seen bad slickers that were hunted that way to much. when you say "dog ran to next bucket" that seems like probably part or big part of problem.

one of my real good friends that hunts his dogs on bear only switched breeds because bear hunting off baits his dogs were slicking all around baits. when i seen his dogs go they looked awesome but he said went through stretches with slick after slick while other dogs trailed away.

some dogs of mine and friends ive seen slick all over have seen and or suspected squirells. that a possibility? have you ever taken dog out in daytime? ive done that a lot and learned a lot bout dogs from young to old.

that age to a little layup for thinking time might not hurt either. hope you get things going in right direction. young dogs are highly irritating!!!
