feeders

got a question for those who use feeders ive been feeding for the last month cant strike a coon off my feeders put my trail cam up coons eating from 12am -5am any suggestions it has worked good in same spot in the past but not now

When you dump on a feeder at the same time very often coon figure out real quick to just hit that feeder later in the night. I don't hunt feeders very often at all but I do keep one or two out so if I want an easy one for a young dog I can hit it. well some of us cant hunt 12-5 and work all day lol I only drop on it once aweek and I have another feeder half mile away coons are early on it and drop there more and doesn't effect coon movement , normally this feeder works best around 10-11 but that was last year during the winter while we was feeding deer 100 yards away they were there early sometimes before dark just trying to figure out whats going on

Yep, coons figure out more than we think they can. Instead of moving my feeders I placed several in the same big woods about 200 yards apart. I was surprised to see on my trail cameras that there would be coons at most or all of them at any given time. When they are moving they are moving. I also found that for some reason I cant tie to anything they will hit the feeders at different times for about two weeks at a time. I did see that the most active time was during a crescent moon. Least active during a bright full moon, even if it was overcast.

My coons did the same thing

but it was because I was turning loose when my camera said they were there...bout 9...after about three nites of that, they switched to 2-5 am...I put another feeder in another woods and gonna hit it and hope they come back later. I am sure they just figured it wasnt safe.

I just use cheap dog feed. I usually buy Retriever brand feed from Tractor supply or if I'm near an Agway I get Big Red. The Retriever brand is the cheapest I can get 50lb for $15.

I use crushed or whole corn. I get it at the CO-OP in town. They also sell a 50lbs (about5-6gal) jug of molasses for cattle for $20.

I fill a 5 gallon bucket full of corn and add about 1/2 gal of water and a 1/2 gal of molasses. I bought a mixer (wisk) at Home Depot for mixing concrete/grout that I put on my drill. I mix it all together for a couple minutes and go fill my feeders.

Also I don't fill my feeder full. In the summer if it takes the coons awhile to empty the feeder, it will make alcohol. I've smelled it a few times walking into my feeders. I just dump them out and add fresh stuff if that has happend. Most of the time they've cleaned it out. Found this is EZ'r for me than souring the corn and adding koolaid/sugar. About 5 minutes and I have the mix ready to go into the feeders.

how long does corn take to sour. I have 5 buckets full with water, corn and koolaid (two packets per 5 gal bucket not sure if that was enough) and it has been there for about a week at 60-70 degree days.
I have never tried it before bout I thought I had a young pup coming my way and wanted to stick some feeders out to help start him. the deal fell through but since I already have it made it up figured id still give it a shot just to see how it works out.

I don't sour my feed. I use it dry so it goes thru the feeder. I mix 50/50 shelled corn and cheap dog food. I sprinkle it with grape or black raspberry dry Kool-Aid. Brown sugar sprinkled on the mix works real well too.
I could not get raccoons to hit molasses. A few local feed stores have it for $3.00 a gallon. I tried it in a rabbit water bottle hanging low on a tree. Squirrels and possum was all that would hit it. I added sugar dissolved in water until it actually didn't taste too bad but they still wouldn't go for it. I tried the grape Kool-Aid with so much sugar it was syrup and they went right for that.
Biggest thing with feeders is to be careful turning out young dogs...coons are not the only animal that will visit a feeder.

I like the tire feeders with corn, water and grape kool aid. Not as many pictures of off game on the cameras, and it seems to be the cheapest way. Somewhere I have pictures of foxes, beavers, deer, and possums eating from bucket feeders. You don't see much of that with the tires.

You never know what you might see on a corn pile...

Yeah them Tire feeders are the best ! I fill mine with whole corn and pour liq molasses on top . my corn dont sour , it usually gets ate up . You also get less waste with these tire feeders.
Coons tend to dig out more than they can eat and evry other critter comes along can eat your feed too. Only downfall to the tire feeders are you cant put a pellet type feed or dog food in em cause when it rains it swells up gets mushy makes a heck of a mess if you have to clean it out cause they not eating out of it as good . Old cream cans with a metal spout welded to it like the above bucket photos work great also for dog food and or pelletized feeds.

MSINC - that rabbit bottle thing is Genius idea ! And funny as well !!

Thanks but I cant take credit for it...I actually saw it on here about a year ago and gave it a try. I could not get coons to go for raw molasses. I added so much sugar to it you could have used it on your pancakes and they finally went for it. It's cheaper to make syrup out of grape Kool-Aid. The drawback is that when it gets warm and the ants and wasps find it then it's about useless. Works good in the winter though.
It's funny how the black bears will hog up on some raw molasses but the coons wont give it a thought.

i see the squirrels chewed a hole in the top of your bucket. thats what happens to mine every time i try useing a bucket with dry corn.

I use a 5 gallon bucket with bread in it i get scrap bread from my local bread store for 10$ a hundred pound last 2 to three night refill 2 times a week

old man once told me there was still 24 hrs in a day just adjust you sleeping habbits.

Yep, they are destructive little animals when they want to be...that's why I used galvanized pipe for the main spout...it was so much easier to do it with PVC pipe, but about a month into it I had all the spouts chewed back to the bucket and squirrels eating all the feed.
I guess it could be worse. At least we don't have bears in southern Maryland...I have a hunting cabin in Virginia and there are a lot of black bears around that neck of the woods...I really don't know what you could do to keep them from ruining a feeder.
