Pine Knob Durango Semen

It's been so good to be back in the woods. I am very lucky to live in a state where we can hunt with hounds all year.

We have everything lined up for the first Durango semen to be used. Greg Shores will use the semen with his Kate Female.

I have a female of Brian Gibbon's Uptight Kennels chosen for the next breeding. She is a direct daughter of Gibbon's Uptight Spike. She needs to get a ride to Iowa so she can be hunted this spring. This will be the second dose.

I will keep everyone updated on the third dose.
I am thinking about opening it up to the females on the current reproducers list if the Gr. Nt. Ch out of Triple X doesn't work out.

Anyone have suggestions?

If you have a female on the current reproducing list and you are interested in trying to raise Durango's last litter. Give me a PM and we can visit.

Thank you all for the PM's

They have been answered.

To answer some of the most common questions:

Durango's hunting style varied depending on were he was being hunted.

In the cold Iowa winter he used a lot of mouth on track. He would work a cold track and finally make an honest tree.

In the southern swamps he was chopped mouth on track. I had never heard him chop on track and the first time he did it I treed him. He moved about 300 yards right handed and I had taken minus. He located and I treed him again. He had the coon. That minus prevented us from winning the cast. It wasn't his fault it was mine.

On a hot summer day he would chase a coon through a corn field and bark once or twice. He caught many of them on the ground. When the coon headed for the timber you would here him locate and have him treed.

HE had a HUGE locate. HE was a very good tree dog who was very accurate.

The one thing I did not like about Durango was this: HE would take a lot of face barking , but if another hound actually bit him he would leave the tree and go find another one. This cost me a major hunt win. He treed two first trees and then shut up. The next time we heard him he was 3/4 of a mile away by himself. He had the coon and was dripping blood everywhere. Everyone thought he had caught one on the ground. IT happened a second time and I took another 125 minus. He found his own second coon and was alone. This time his eye was split wide open. The cast was curious about him catching two on the ground the same night.
The third time it happened we were at the tree. He was on a chain treeing and the other dog reached over and nailed him.
Everyone knew what had happened, but their was nothing we could do. I knew he didn't bite himself and I knew he didn't catch them on the ground. If he had caught them on the ground he would not leave.

His pups were early starters and very independent . A lot of his pups did not go to competition hunters. Two litters went to hide hunters and one litter was sold to Big Game hunters in Wisconsin.

I am not wanting to sell any of this semen. I am allowing certain females to use it. I do not feel comfortable selling something that I can not guarantee. I want NO CASH for his semen, NOR WILL I ASK FOR IT. THIS IS NOT ABOUT MONEY.

I feel it is time to see if he can help our breed in anyway. IF not, then no harm is done.

Chip, as you know I had TIMBER VALLEY ANNIE before you got her and of course she was out of the second all-grand litter {which was the same exact cross as the first} ever made in the English breed. I loved her locate, tracking ability, disposition and accuracy. Not taking anything at all from LUCKY because her reproducing record speaks for itself but I do believe that there are crosses that can be made with todays hounds that can produce as good or maybe even better than the crosses made on her and DURANGO...JMO...
The CHARLEY 7 hounds, the MAINSTREET ROY hounds, the UPTIGHT SPIKE hounds, the SWAMP CAT hounds, the MAINSTREET JACK hounds and many more hounds that were not around 15 years ago. As you know all dogs have faults but most folks don't mention them. Good luck with females that you choose to breed.

Yes, Brian I completely agree. That is exactly why I have chosen to use a complete out-cross for the second for the second breeding. ( which is what we had discussed earlier)

I love Anny's tracking, accuracy, and disposition also. Pete Thompson and I used Anny together in the breeding pen and then she came home to Iowa.

Not to be NIT PICKY but She was actually out of the third and FINAL all grand cross between Durango and Lucky. I had to order an Offspring Report to remember them all. LOL LOl it happened so long ago I could not remember names and dates.

The first cross included: 08/06/1996
Timber Valley TEN and Timber Valley Queen.

The second cross had:05/02/07
Gr.Ch South Carolina Reject.
Timber Valley Betsey was also in that Litter.

The Third and final cross included.04/10/1998
NT. CH (4 wins) Ch. Timber Valley JOE
Ch, GR. NT. CH Timber Valley ANNY
GR. Ch. GR. NT. CH. Boughton's Red Ruby
Timber Valley Bird, She was a coondog, but had no mouth.
two males dogs also.

I knew that Durango crossed well with Lucky and she made several other good crosses. She produced coondogs with every male she was crossed with.

So, if Durango will cross well with a female that reproduces.
....... Where would I find females that are proven reproducers like LUCKY.....? on the current reproducer's list!!! Hence the reason I will offer the very last breeding of Durango to a female on the current reproducing list.

I completely agree with you about him crossing well with these lines that weren't going strong 15 years ago. That's why I have done this.... BRIAN, I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH THAT LOGIC.

I know Timber Valley Ten and Timber Valley Queen are in many pedigrees today. They reproduced many, many, Stud dogs and good females. Boughton's Red Ruby reproduced the 2013 World Show Champion. I hunted with and showed her a lot when she lived in Rice, MN.

My plan is to use all of this semen this summer.

I hope their is enough interest in what this could potentially do for our breed.

Oh Ok, It has been a long time ago, I was thinking ANNIE was from the second cross but looking back now your right. Man I sure would have liked to have seen what JOE would have done if he would have lived. But we will work together to create more JOE'S, ANNIE'S, TEN'S and QUEEN'S.

Also on a side note, I remember BIRD also. She was at Mike Tomberlin's for a while. She was a coondog but like you said she just didn't have any mouth.

Your exactly right and your Sandy female will play a big part in all of this. I can't wait to get her to Iowa and get her in the hunts, raise a litter of pups from her, and see what happens.

I have had two more owners contact me in regards to the final breeding. I am very confident that somehow we will have Durango pups within the next year.

Hopefully, I will have a hound just like ole Joe to carry on with. Joe was truly fun to hunt... I sure wish I would have been able to see what he would reproduce.

I had forgotten about Bird being at Mike's house. I can't tell you how many nights I walked into a tree thinking she would be split treed somewhere only to find her at the tree. We never heard her as we were walking in. But there she was bellied up and nailing it.

Did you know she was gun shy also? The first time I shot a coon she took off. Didn't find her again until she was treed.
It took me about 30 days and hundreds of shells to get her over it. Every morning and night when I fed her I would stand over her and unload a tube of .22 shells into the air.
She had her quirks, but she was a coondog. I always wondered if she had barked her voice out when she was young or something.

Thanks Mr. Jameson. I see you have had some good luck with semen crosses. I haven't had much luck finding something I am totally satisfied with from track to tree. I have a young male out of Kate and GrNtCh Comb's Hardtime Eddie that I really like for a young dog. They are less than a year old and already getting good reports on several from that litter. The Cross with Durango has me real excited. One of the best dogs I have had was a Grandson of Timberstar buck with Jr on the bottom as well.

She has been bred..... so now we wait and see! We have done everything the right way and if it doesn't happen then I guess it wasn't meant to be.

Headed to English Days in a few days..... first time I've been able to go since I handled ole' spike and placed 8th. Will you guys be there?

I sent you a picture of Durango the night he finished into Grand Night Champion. I do not have any pictures online to upload, but you can also go online to Youtube and google his name. There are videos of him Youtube treeing and on the bench also.

I hope we get good news tomorrow morning when the first female that was bred to Durango semen has an ultra sound to check for pups.
