Would you compete a 3 legged hound?

Is it even allowed? In bench, I would think she'd be disqualified. My mother took one of Maybelle's pups to a local UKC event to do bench and was talking with someone that thought we should bring Maybelle to compete even though she has 3 legs. Maybelle was hit by a car last fall and I tried to save her leg, but in the end we had to have it amputated. She gets around fine. She actually treed a coon only a few days ago when I had her out for excersize. I don't know what I'm doing, but she seems too.

I have shown her in open AKC shows. Never realized we had local UKC events and also didn't know she was eligible for AKC papers as well, so on her papers it looks like she never did anything. She was actually supposed to go to her first UKC event the weekend after her accident.

I'm not a hunter myself, have no idea what I'm doing. After she treed her first coon at 4 months while out on a trail ride, I did take her to a local coon hunter to get her going because it's what she is bred to do. She's been out a few times with different people and she will go out and tree alone at my family's farm. You hear her bark change and have to go get her.

Just something I'm considering. I'm still figuring out the different events UKC offers for hounds.

My grandfather had a plott hound with 3 legs when I was a kid that would make a good hound with 4 legs look foolish in a night hunt , a lot of guys tried to buy that dog! That old dog is what got me hooked on coon hunting 35 years ago !!

If it was a good coontreer 3 legs wouldn't make difference to me.Prime example would be the dog named Bone Chiller and another dog named King George.Both are 3 legged dog and winning hunts.

We had a female that had been hit by a car and only used three legs. She needed a first. I had been hunting her a little and took her to a hunt. She put on a show and finally got her first place win, making her a ntch.

Theres a article on here somewhere with randy morgan and a dog named king george i believe..he was three legged and actually did some big winning

3 legged dogs....

Obviously you CAN hunt and show a three legged dog, I have two dogs that are each missing a leg and my buddy also has one as well. We still tree lots of coon with all three. The biggest thing to consider is can the dog handle it. One of my dogs lost a back leg and the other lost a front leg. The dog that is missing the front leg is a lot more impaired than the dogs with the missing back legs. The dog missing a front leg has trouble in thick brush/grass and just plain would be unable to hunt as long and hard as necessary to complete a nite hunt. The two that are missing a back leg do MUCH better. The only problem I have is one of the dogs was an extremely hard going, deep hunting, independent dog. Well the accident didn't change any of his hunting style at all, lol! The problem is that because he refuses to rein in his hunting style, one night of hunting is very taxing on his body. He will literally loose a pound or two of body weight in one night of hunting. Pretty hard to get him in hunting shape without him loosing tons of weight and looking pretty rough.

I WAS HUNTING A REBONE THE NIGHT SHE GOT HUNG IN THE FENCE AND CUT HER CIRCULATION OFF TO HER LR LEG.. A YEAR LATER FINISHED HER TO GRAND NIGHT IT WASNT EASY ON HER AND ME BUT IT CAN BE DONE

Several years ago, I was at a large AKC all-breed conformation show, & there was a beautiful little Schipperke dog that had just won Best of Breed.

I spent a few minutes talking with his owner, & I asked if she had ever had problems in the show ring, due to his missing front leg. She said that most judges had no issues with it; there was still a part of the upper arm in place so that you could tell it was in a normal position.

She told me that only once did she ever have a judge question her dog's eligibility in the ring. She said that her dog had done a lot of winning on 3 legs.

hunted with a three legged dog at coon dog days last year.. It was a walker dog a man from SC owned him.. that dog had a heart the size of texas.. he won the cast that night and qualified for the world hunt last year..

Duke Prolux chili dog is 3 legged. He's missing a back leg. He still gets plenty deep.

I have a red bone with three legs, he got hung up in a fence for to long and had to have it removed. He still trees coons and now I think he's even faster with 3 than he was with 4 sometimes. The only reason I don't put him in the hunts is because of fences. You could call him treed and he would just be at the end of a fence. Sometimes I have to pick him up and set him over a fence. I'll try to post some pix and videos of him on here later.

Tricolor Chiller has over $1,000 in open money this year and gets hunted regular in the hunts. Three legs and a Coonhound Heat is all thats needed.

I drew a decent English dog a few years back. It wasn't until the 3rd
drop that I realized the dog only had 3 legs.

I currently have 2 at the house right now with 3 legs.. A 4 yr old Grand nite walker female and a young Plott male. The walker was hit by a car and had complications from that that lead to amputating her leg and the plott was hit by a 4-wheeler and broke his leg. The walker female seems to be just as good of a coondog now as she was before, I noticed at first she seemed to tire really easy but now that I have her hunted back up into shape she is doing fine.

Keep the weight down

Try and keep your dogs weight down as much as possible. I've hunted with a 3 legged Redbone that was hard to beat. He was thin and in shape. The dog was fast.

Jason O'Brien's youngest son Tate comp hunts a little female out of Mafia with 3 legs . She was kicked by a horse at just a few months old and had a rear leg amputated . Many of men have stated that they could not have kept up if she had 4 . For any of you that may know Terry Bennett ask him about the time he showed 4 different dogs one night when "Unstable Mable" was along .
If your dog is kept in good health and good physical condition it will be fine .
