if you go to Tractor Supply they have shampoo called Vetrolin White 'N Bright. It works pretty well. We use it on our walkers, but it's an all around color brightening shampoo.

I'll second this reply. I've bought from the supply places on line and in catalogues....And like Cleo recommended Cherrybrook has all types of different shampoos from all color enhancers (black shampoo, whitening shampoo, etc) to puppy and flea shampoos..any kind you could ever want. They are quality pet shampoos. But I personally like the shampoo from TSC listed above just as well as any I've used. I seem to find myself reaching for it ahead of other shampoo I've got.

Of course in late winter/ early spring time I will mix up my own concoction to bath the dogs. Dogs coats can get dry and as season changes and sheding begins, I will mix....Dawn dish washing liquid (to help get out stains and dirt), cheapo people dandruff shampoo (to control the white flakes on dark colored dogs), and other half pet shampoo like discussed above (to add the conditioners back to the coat and help with rinsing). I will thin this with water in clear bottle and gently shake.

In our TSC the Vetrolin White N Bright shampoo is in the horse section. Its deep purple color. I really like it.

On my Walkers I use the purple shampoo that people use, then condition with mane n tail conditioner. For this red dog I'm gonna use the shampoo that people use for brown hair and same conditioner!!

When you mix the shampoo with Dawn what ratio do you use? We don't have a TSC near me, any idea where else I can get the Vetrolin White N Brite shampoo?

Pet Edge is great for pet supplies and Amazon has a mink sheen shampoo that is very good.

for regular shampooing, I use an oatmeal based shampoo.

if they have skin issues, you can use a medicated shampoo like Selsum Blue (store brand is fine). It will help with skin and also make hair soft (for the courser haired ones).

pre show, I use a brightening shampoo made for black hair (as that is what is predominate on mine). I have one I got at an AKC vendor and it is purple, so probably like any of the whitening/brightening shampoos that are purple. I would stick with a whitening one if the dog has more white/blue than black/blue as it may dull the color.

and whatever you do, do not get this shampoo in their eyes! you can use a baby shampoo (like Johnsons) for the face/eyes. much gentler on them.

sometimes the dandruff is also related to not totally getting all the soap off, esp with a darker dog. when you rinse, do so from the tail to head, pulling the hair forward against the grain so you can get the water into the skin and rinse well.

I have noticed that no matter which one I use nor how much I rinse, esp if I wash day before show, I will have flakes. however, if I wash 2 days before, no flakes. the body has time to replenish the skin oils and that will keep flakes down.

some ppl use a mixture of listerine/water and spritz dog and rub into coat before show and that will help keep dandruff down. there are many sprays that can be used to wipe dog down. Crown Royal makes a shampoo, conditioner and a finishing spray. I use the spray and when sprayed on and rubbed w/ towel, in direction of hair (using some elbow grease), it will give a sheen and help pull natural oils to surface as well. and smells good.

on a personal note, I have gotten away from the show sheen and similar products (many still use it). with a darker coat, if the area you are in is dusty, the residue from the spray will act like a magnet and attach to the coat, then the dog looks dirty again. the CR mentioned does not leave a residue and does not attract dust.

small amount of Murphy's Oil Soap mixed in the shampoo will also help with the flaxing... I have had better luck with it over the dandruff shampoo

I like Chris Christensen Black On Black for dark or black coats. And overall....Quadrupe's Whitener Brightner. It is CHEAP $29 a gallon and mixes 1-8!!! Whitens walkers and makes all coats iridescent under lighting. I have tried everything from Dawn to the pricey shampoos. This was by far the best. I bathe show dogs weekly and this was recommended at shows and sells out quickly. Smells good too!

I always have equine products on hand that I use on my show horse, so that's been what I use on my dogs for pre-show grooming. Generally before a show I will do the first wash with a cheaper shampoo to fit the dog's coat/skin type to get the grime off. Then I wash the entire dog with Vetrolin White N' Brite. After that wash, I use several different color enhancing shampoos on the different coat colors each dog has made by Exhibitor's Labs. I still use the black formula on my lightest colored bluetick. It seems to enhance the "blue." Those are let sit for about 5 minutes, then I rinse the dog thoroughly, towel dry him as best I can, and then while the dog is still damp apply Show Sheen (the original spray, not aerosol) and rub it in with my hands. When applied to a damp coat Show Sheen is designed to repel dust and dirt, and if any does get on them it's very easy to wipe off. Show day I spot clean with no rinse shampoo as needed and finish with either Pepi or Hi-Gloss finishing spray.

Exhibitor's Labs color enhancing shampoos are my absolute favorite. I've used them since I was a kid on show horses and nothing has done as well for me since then. The only negative is they are a little pricey. The Vetrolin White N' Brite is a little expensive as well, but lasts a long time...and it does a good job enhancing all coat colors, especially if you let it sit!

Well i guess if im going to continue showing my dog im going to have to throw away my mane and tail shampoo and spend some money lol. on a side note does anyone brush their dogs teeth before a show? I thought about it just haven't done it. thought i would ask

Of course! I have toothpaste in my show bag! I got it from work tho, not TS, and I dont think horses would like it.

just not too cold. it could cause "drop tail" at least that's what ive heard it called. washed one of mine and the water got too cold. had to wait 3 days before he lifted his tail to normal carry position.

I use a shampoo called HyLyt...works great and can be used frequently without drying them out. It is hypoallergneic and soap free so it helps with flaking. It will bring out the shine in the dog's natural coat. Start with a goos quality dog food and you are over half way there...mine sometimes don't even get bathed for shows and they shine as much as the ones that got bathed the day of...

T- Gel people shampoo works great on any skin issues a dog may have from dandruff to more extreme problems & good maintainance shampoo for every week washing that won't dry them out .
