Iowa Trump

Anyone hunt with him?
How was he?
Size mouth was he a lay-up type hound or more of a track hound?
I notice a lot of hounds I like these days go back to him. Thanks in advance

Are you referring to a Black & Tan raised by Hans Wagner from Iowa back in the 1930's or 40's??

From what I've heard he was a lay-up artist that was deadly accurate but was as equally as good track dog. All I've ever heard about is how accurate he was. We bred a female to him years ago and started a female pup and later sold her back to Travis. She is supposed to be deadly accurate as well. We liked her. Accurate, good nose, but didn't care for her straight chop mouth.

My dad is looking at buying a grandpup to Buckeye from that same cross.

i know my dad drew out with him in 92 in zabretta mn and was ahead by 500+ with an hour left to hunt. Sawyer withdrew him that nite. I know he would get deep and was accurate. Didnt make alot of mistakes. From wat ive heard he was tougher on crappy nites cause he was so accurate and didnt make mistakes but if coon were moving and things were getting action packed with he would get outscored pretty easily with the rite dog on the cast. Not sure about his mouth

Donnie Sawyer hunted the guts out of Trump when he was young! I saw him go a couple of times and always thought he reproduced better than he was himself--he was accurate and could get deep, but I thought he passed some coons. I like to see Trump in a pedigree and have seen several really nice dogs that go back to him. The dog I have now goes back to Trump and Merlin Hershberger's English River Jill dog on one side. They are usually pretty smart if they carry Trump in the pedigree IMO.

Kind of off-topic but........

I believe in '93 when he placed at the World Hunt that he and Piney Hill Liz (placed 6th) kind of got shafted. If memory serves me neither of those hounds had lost a cast (Zones or World) but there was 6 semi-final cast winners and the UKC format didn't have the final hunt-off round at that time to see who got the final spot in the final 4.

And I believe there was a dog or 2 in the final 4 cast that had lost a cast at the Zones. I think that year is what prompted UKC to go to the final hunt off cast in case there was more than 4 cast winners in the semi-final round.

Trump was to the point of too smart for his own good and his pups were the same way and so is his grand pups! If you think you can beat train any of these Trump dogs move on and get something else. They are soft hearted to say the least. I liked a Trump bred dog bred to the Stylish harry line the best. Harry would put more hunt in them.

Posted by Treye VanDyne on 07-26-2013 06:26 PM:

I personally like the trump bred dogs because you don't have to get on them to teach them a lesson a swat on the nose and that's enough

Posted by hershberger on 07-27-2013 02:01 AM:

The first 2 nights I hunted with trump, he looked totally stupid. I am guessing dumbdog seen him on one of those types of nights, BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTT I hunted with him probably over 100 nights after that and that was when he was 8 or older. I will say in my opinion, the BEST all around dog that I ever hunted with, period. Thick coon,he could destroy you, not just on tough nights. He had the respect pf EVERY hunter in iowa when he was put in pkc hunts at 8-9 years old. He seldom lost a cast. People may bad mouth him if they only hunted him1 time, He will always have the respect from all the pkc hunters from the 1990-1994 era in iowa. He did not travel real well. Good to go to a major hunt several days in advance. He was a very good reproducer, BUT never reproduced better than himself. Maybe 1 or 2 close or equal. I would give anything for his equal today. Accurate don't describe him---Nearly 100% accurate in all types of conditions does. DEADLY ACCURATE!!!!! Horn on track, and a steady, beautiful treedog.

Doug Cheek guided him in IN at the world hunt when it was in Columbia City, IN and I think he guided him 2 nights...Doug is a super guy that for sure knows what a coon dog is and he said he was top notch! Take it to the bank when Doug tells ya!!! He owned several hounds after that experience with Trump that were either out of him or grand pups to him and had a lot of luck. I hunted with a couple of dogs Doug owned and they were really nice!

Treye, shipped back then normally meant you'd ship your female by Airlines to a local airport. Then stud dog owner would pick her up breed her when ready then take her back to airport for the return trip back to sender. Notice the extra fee, and of course you can see it is a complete hassle to go thru that entire process. Needless to say the extra fee was never enough for the stud owner to breakeven.

hassle: I studded 2 dogs here..Trump and blackland bear. Both were very hard to breed. Female had to be absolutely perfect and thyen you had to use hand guide service. I cringed when somebody was going to bring a female because it was going to be very embarrassing.stud dog business is not for me.

Posted by Treye VanDyne on 07-28-2013 07:14 PM:

I had no idea you had bear I have 2 nice females that to back to both lines. My little black female goes back to black land Ernie twice and his litter mate sis once In 3 generations. I really like both lines. The trump bred female I own in partnership can be soft to correction but doesn't need much correction tell her no and move on. Too smart for her own good sometimes but you never have to correct her for the same thing twice

Ha ha

"Hand guide service"
That funny right there, I laughed out loud when I read it

Yep, he owned Maude and did compete with her in the world hunt. I never hunted with her she was gone before I met Jim. He always packed a nice hound! I miss old Jim!
