Rewarding your dog
I haven't owned a hound in 10 years & recently purchased one that has a fist place win. I have never competition hunted before but thought it may be fun to get into some local hunts & see if I can finish him out. I had the dog on a 2 week trial & he did an awesome job. He just recently started chewing the tree & I wonder if it is because he is getting frustrated by not getting “rewarded” with a coon. How do you competition hunters reward your dogs? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Probably nothing to do with getting coon shot out, usually genetic and sometimes started by being treed to long in warm weather, once they start chewing its tough to stop. The up side is dogs that chew some are usually stay put treedogs.

In my experience its a learned trait....they see another dog doing it and they start...
I've heard they might do it because they get hot...
Like john said as long as the 2 don't get em, I don't mind it because if they are chewing they typically ain't going anywhere...
Some take it to extremes and strip bark etc...some aren't as bad and just chew on branches, vines, saplings etc..
Handled one that made it look like a brush hog was ran around the tree lol...he'd chew through some decent sized saplings...
On the note of rewarding a dog, by the time I take em to competition hunts they don't need rewarded...I will pet em and praise em on a good tree and that's all they need
At hunts I grab em off the tree and go tie em back and shine the tree...if its good I will give em a quick petting and tell em good boy as I untie his leash

Thanks for the info....Do you guy reward your dogs beyond petting them up when they have a coon?

When they are first starting i give them every other one for the first few weeks.I knock maybe 1 out of 10 to a young dog if they are doin a good job, an older dog maybe 1 every couple months and im not sure they need them. When the hides are prime and im feelin bloody i kill a bunch but thats for me not the dogs Lol.

I am exactly like John...I go a bit farther and knock out a coon every nite for a pup if they tree one..once they are solid and doing it right I stop...
Some dogs "need" a little fur once in a blue moon...some don't...usually if they get in a rut of slicks or not staying treed a coon or 2 fixes that...but older dogs usually they are fine...
Can bring treats or something if you wanted...but mine are always happy with being petted and praised...and maybe thats why mine don't need coon knocked down....if they are looking a little weak on the tree i get in there and fire em up...
And like John said if I feel like skinning coon I am knocking them down for me not the dog.. some years its just a couple "for the dog". Some years fur is decent or I have a pup and I'm skinning more...now that I am a trapper I knock down a few regardless each season...

The chewing is probably in his blood, JMO. As far as 'rewarding' your dog, my feelings are this....Mine don't "need" it, but I give him a paycheck for working. I wouldnt work without a pay check on Friday. JMO...Jim

Get his ears checked, many times when they start chewing for no reason, it's a health concern. Tom

I had a buddy who had a dog that killed every tree he treed . put one on him and never missed a bark. when he took him to the hunts he would still chew but not near bad
As long the two minutes don't get him I wouldn't worry about it.

you bought this dog it wasnt chewing & you say it just started chewing & you asking about rewarding a dog. i bet your over hyping your dog on tree's. (rewarding your dog on tree's with praise) getting him over excited.
i'v found if you over praise dogs on tree's they will start chewing, jumping & i tell people if you got a real intence treedog you get to over hyping a dog on tree's he aint got but 1 way to go & thats side ways. next thing you know he'l be face barking & blowing. IF THIS IS WHATS HAPPENING.
PRAISE YOUR DOG AFTER YOU PULL HIM OFF TREE'S.

i had one fine hound would hammer the tree every breath - unless there was a sapling near by. Her favorite was something about 1-2 inches thick. She would chew 'til it was down, then start barking again. I ever get another one like that, she's gonna wear an ecollar and if she trees, she better keep barking. Also, if idiots would stop breeding dogs with that trait, the problem would be unheard of. Same with jumping and a host of other problems. People who will do anything for a few dollars more have a serious character problem.

Hunt him in brairs when he locks down on a briar that will slow him down, just stay on him and you will keep it curbed, chili powder will work, quit praising him around the tree, just knock one down every now and then. Nothing can beat time in the woods, best thing for a dog, regardless of how you reward them.
