Need Advice possibly over paying for a new pup

Hi Everyone!

Been spending a lot of time researching coonhounds, training and hunting lately. Unfortunately I have done much of my research after reserving a pup.

I hunted through my teenage years and may be looking to get back into it. I'm not a 100% sure if I plan on hunting my future hound, the main deciding factor being if I can find enough good land to hunt in my area. At the time of searching for a pup, I did a quick google search to ck the price point on the pups I was going to look at later that day. The search turned up a few kennels I think that were breeding show dog quality redbones the price points being anywhere from 700 to 1000. So the price of pups I was going to look at later that day at 600 did not sound to bad at the time. Obv once I arrived at the kennel which will remain name less, I could not say no to the adorable little guys, and put down the 200 dollar non refundable deposit.

After spending a few weeks digging around in the forums, reading articles, I finally came across this website and community. It would appear this is one of the more active forums, and appears to be a great community! However after spending some time scrolling through the classified forums, I am a bit concerned that I may be over paying, and am considering forfeiting the deposit. Considering I may be able to get a pup with better lineage for remaining balance.

Here is the lineage of the pup that I reserved

.....................NITECH CH'PR'FIREBALLS TIMBERCHOPPIN DAN
..........'PR'RED MAN DAN
......................'PR'TIMBER CHOPPER APPLE VALLEY KATE
.......CH STORMIN' THINDERIN' RED CLOUD
......................'PR'MONTANA PETE
.............'PR'CRASE'S FROZEN CREEK ROSE
.....................'PR'LITTLE ANN

.......................NITECH'PR'OUTLAW MANDY TWO
......CH'PR'STORMIN' MILLION DOLLAR BABY (aka Kasha)
......................WSHOWCH GRWCH GRFCH GRCH'PR'ONLY IN AMERICA
...........GRCH'PR'STORMIN' I'M A SURVIVOR
.....................GRCH'PR'TREE RIZIN' TRIPLE CROWN

PUPS

..............................‘PR’ HERVIE’S RED NOSE BULLET
...................CHGRNITECH ‘PR’ HERVIE’S RED NOSE AMBLIN’ J
...........................‘PR’ HERVIE’S REDNOSE AUSTIN
...........‘PR’ JOHN DOE
..........................GRNITECH GRCH’PR’LEE’S REDHOT DUSTY

.........‘PR’ MUCKMOUNTAIN RED ROSE
.........................GRNITECH GRCH’PR’HATCHIE RIVER DIMOND ACE
................‘PR’HOLLAND’S TREE JAMMIN RUBY
.........................‘PR’KEMPS DIXIE

I thought I would post in here and try to get someones opinion that is more experienced then I am. So what do you guys think I should do?

Also do you think there is any chance I could get my non refundable deposit back, I'm assuming not.

You can find a much better bred pup for less then $600. That pedigree is nothing to brag about. If the deposit is non-refundable, say bye bye to it. Sorry. But the other $400 cal buy you a much better bred dog and if it is Red bones, call me, I have a lot of good Redbone breeders around me that woun't charge you $600.

Overpriced for that dog based on pedigree alone.

Without knowing the breeder or the pups sire and dam I would say it is overpriced.

alot

In my opinion thats overpriced for any pup. Keep in mind that when buyin a pup you never k.ow what your gonna get but pedigrees and proven crosses help to make an educated decision. Good luck.

Posted by Fisher13 on 12-22-2012 10:19 PM:

Yeah, Now I really dont know what to do.

I'm not so super concerned with lineage due to the fact, I'm sure I will never do more then recreation hunt her. However I don't particular enjoy putting food someones else's table, when God knows its hard enough to get it on my own.

Should I just forfeit the 200, based upon just the principle, or suck it up and pay the other 400.

Posted by VA BLUEDOGS on 12-22-2012 10:29 PM:

well

Well there are other factors. You have to figure in travel costs as well. I hate for you to have to forfeit that money then buy another pup for 2 or 3 hundred then spend another hundred in gas goin go get it. It could turn out to be as broad as it is wide. Try negotiating with the people. They may cut you a break.

Posted by slobbermouth21 on 12-22-2012 10:44 PM:

You can get the same results from buyen a 50 dollar pup as you will a 1000 dollar pup the only reason them dogs have titles is because they were pushed hard to get them titles doesn't mean they will be better dogs I'm willing to bet them pups were bred based on titles then they was traits.

Sorry to hear bout this mess your in.Ive never paid more than 200 for a pup and never will. The odds of this pup having very few titles for 3 generations and being impressive is slim.Shame you met someone that prices are so high. Some of best pups there is go for around 300.JMO

Posted by VA BLUEDOGS on 12-22-2012 11:23 PM:

cost

I understand the costs of pups if you have to do a.i. on a big name dog but thats pretty steep. Never hurts to try an negotiate. Hate for you to start out huntin after payin that much for a pup then have it not do well. Might discourage you from stayin in it.

Ok thanks everyone I appreciate you help. I've had trouble locating an active forum, with a good community, looks like I found one!

Go ahead and get the pup. You are already vested in the pup two hundred. May make a world beater or may just make a yard dog. That is high for a pup but just use it as a lesson learned and see what she makes.

HUnt with the parents. After all you are looking to see if the parents can reproduce what they are. if they won't tree coon, maybe that isn't what you want. Always hunt with at least one of the parents if you are able to. If you are looking for a show dog, the pedigree points to a bunch of dogs that have proven their worth on the bench, it doesn't mean they can't tree coon, but there is no proof on the paper. Some will say that even if they did have titles in the woods that doesn't mean anything. It doesn't mean a lot, but it is a start.

Papers never treed a coon, and they never will.

That being said, hunt with one or both of the parents. If the owner refuses, I think for me, I would forfeit the deposit and look elsewhere.

There's not a lot wrong with this ped.

Timber knockin Dan
Johnson's Apache Man
Amblin J
Lee's Redhot Dusty

all hunted and I raised, campaigned and buried with a head stone Only in America( Dutch) who was known mostly for a show dog . He had faults but I hunted him and didn't hesitate to shock young dogs if Dutch checked them and didn't go.

many of the others may or may not have been good dogs , I just don't know about them .
$600 is high for me but some get that kind of money for pups. I do know other breeds of dogs cost much more than coonhound pups and have to be no more than healthy . Unless you're lucky most prices fall near $200/250 and if you want something special with a ped packed to lean toward what you want $300/400 is not unheard of. To be honest I wasn't sure what you intended doing with the pup so if you really liked it and wanted it you may be ok . People pay what to me are outrageous prices for pet pups . I could tell you about people with pups (Redbones )around the country but buying and traveling or shipping would eat up most of the difference in your money unless you got your deposit back. I also hope you don't have expensive shipping /travel costs in the one you deposited .
Bottom line is the ped. is a cross of hunt & show dogs that could be as good as any other .

I'd stick with it and give it time to develop. I spent 7200.00 on several lab pups to have nothing I wanted. I went and paid 750.0 for a pup that was not reg and he is 11 months old now. To date he had retrieved over 200 doves to hand and 2 months into duck season has retrieved around 150 ducks. I wouldn't take 2500.00 now. In fact I have several duck hunters wanting to breed to him and did I mention he was not reg. you never know!

buy a started dog ....running & treeing....a pup has 2 many ???? marks

Posted by Fisher13 on 12-28-2012 07:56 PM:

Update:

Emailed the kennel, they of course thought there price was fair, and would not return any of my deposit.

I found a litter of walker pups, that are 2nd generation nocturnal kane, and 3rd generation nailor, and some well known studs on the female side.

Yesterday I drove down and brought the girl home, I am very please so far. She has shown a lot of determination when she wants things. A bit timid at times, but I think this could be expected given she is only 8 weeks old.

Thanks everyone for your help!

Posted by Jackson87 on 12-28-2012 11:22 PM:

So did you get the redbone or a differant walker?

Posted by Fisher13 on 12-29-2012 01:37 AM:

No I did not get the redbone, I forfeited my deposit.

I bought a walker pup for 250 with a much better pedigree

Overpriced

Especially with so little in the PED
Maybe for something really special, frozen semen pup, all grand, etc... But not for that PED
Most pups are way down in price anymore from in the past.
That looks like a 100 dollar pup.
Got some on the way that will blow that PED out of the water in the woods or show ring for $150 I'm doing as an insurance policy, on the parents.

Well your 450 in a fresh walker pup... now don't let some of these folks talk you into anything crazy.

I have owned and hunted with sure enough coon dogs that if I posted their ped asking the same thing... the wagoneers would tell me it won't make a coondog.

Your going to have to wade through a pile of BS on the internet... no matter what forum your on.

Take it all in, weigh it out... and then make a decision with your new pup.

If you don't... or won't have patience, give that pup away now!
