At what point do I give up ????

I have a pup that is almost 11 months old I have hunted him 7 nites a week for 5 months . He will trail but seems to get bogged down a lot and he has treed 2 times both times I didn't see a coon. He has had several coon shot out when hunting with other dogs, I carried him this morning about 4am and my cousins cur came and met us in the woods, he started trailing around a old pound and was doing a better than usual job of it so I knew it had to be hot, then he bogged down on it and the cur went on and treed the coon in a hole that was at the bottom of a tree in a bluff I looked and confirmed it was a coon , but my pup wouldn't even acknowledge that it was there he went up and down the branch barking going right by the other dog that was going crazy on this coon , I dont know what to do does not look like he has the drive to finish a track he just likes to( boo who) but maybe its just me .

i wouldnt give him no more coon i would tie him back for a while this will charge his system for him imo again iam no professional dog trainer as some lol

Sounds like you have burnt him out. Hunting a PUP that much in the winter months when most of the tracks suck does not help its confidence or it's performance. JMO, which doesn't mean anything. Most dogs at 6 months old, when you started hunting him hard are not goin to be the miracle dogs you read about on these boards. Good luck.

although there are exceptions... don't believe everything you hear on here about these early wiz bang super duper..early starting coondogs........ A vast majority of pups are far from ready to be hunted like that at 6 months of age till 11 months of age.......being hunted 7 nights a week for 5 months is some serious hunting even for an older dog.

best advice i can give you is ..slow down...give your pup a break...find him a GOOD mentor in the form of a good older hound. ...then when he shows signs of catching on....take him and hunt him by himself...and let him develop the skills he has bred in him....be patient.....it takes time.....many a young hound has been sold because the original owner lacked patience.....i can think of a couple of dogs right off the top of my head that were sold and traded hands a few times...only to turn into world class hounds when they matured....

its went from fun to work for him. just put him on the box for a couple weeks and and go back to putting him with a GOOD broke dog. not a slick dog or a trashy dog. you will get what you hunt him with so dont use junk. that being said he is only 11 months old. i wouldnt give up yet

I dont believe in hunting a dog "too hard".

Why on earth would anyone hunt a dog that young that obviously isnt getting it right 7 days a week?

They dont all make it, they dont all start at 6 months.

IMO your dog prolly has some pretty bad habbits at this point, and its going to take some serious work to get it straightened out.

i got a young pup here once that was around a 1 1/2 year old..owner had grown tired of him trailing and treeing up the wrong tree..or trailing and never treeing.....he assumed his dog would never be anything but a slick treeing idiot.

i took the hound for two reasons....1st he would track...2nd he would tree.
his problem was not a treeing problem as many think a slick treeing dog has.
A slick treeing dog is a TRACKING PROBLEM!!!...think about it...common sense tells you he didn't finish the track, because there is no coon there......
I could have probably hunted that dog for years and he'd
might have continued to make the same mistake over and over again...
But i took him back to square one...and released a few caged coon in the daylight so i could see what he was doing..if he pulled up short and started treeing up the wrong tree..i'd take him and put him back on the track till he got it right..every time he got it right.and treed up the right tree...i rewarded him with the coon.....it didn't take long for the old potlicker to get with the program.

Put him up for god sakes he may be shot already but goin huntin to him ain't even a big deal anymore if u take em that much and he isn't doin right just develop every bad habit known to man when u do take em again its critical he gets some very good experiences right away maybe he will forget some of the bad or at least slow down on em

One of my pups did not start till he was 14 months . Your over doing it for a pup . It has got to be fun and it has to click with him at whatever age his brain decides . Dont give up on him just give him a break .

I don't hunt him from dark to daylight I carry him out for a hour our so and started when he was 5 months old pretty much just to get him out of the pen and to let him exercise and get him use to the woods. I have not pushed him I have let him do it all on his own he is very independent and will not honor another dog , he started trailing and treeing some , I guess I will put him up till corn season but I cant see a hour or two being too much for a pup his age , when all he is doing is trailing around he has not go on a good running coon yet ....

Your dog prolly thinks running around barking is what he is supposed to do, doing this repeatedly 7 nights a week just reinforces that.

Your job right now is to make him understand what he needs to be doing.....Then repeat that behavior.

Think about it this way. If you go deer hunting every day of the season for 1 hour and take a deer every one of those days how much fun would that be?

Never expect a kid to do an adults job.

Lol well i guess everyone is entitled to an opinion ,,,,but i bet this young pup has a better handle than most grown dogs ...i have not killed a coon for him ever hunt only bout 7or 8 ....i guess i might have worded my question poor so let me try again ....what would you expect out of a almost 11 month old that has been exsposed and i did cut him back to only 4 nites a week btw ....lol but maybe i just dont know how to handle a pup lol

I am speechless on that one.

I never hunt a pup UNTIL they are 11 months, except for short trips to the woods. You burned this dog out by a long shot. They are neither physically or mentally mature enough to handle what you've put him through at that age.

What is a short trip ...i thought a slow walk through the woods behind my house for a hour was short....but i am open to anything

I wouldn't give up on him just yet, but I think the help you're really wanting will only come from reading a book or two on training and actually having phone conversations with people willing to help. Training is just too long of a subject to be able to type out on an internet forum.

I'll be the first to say give me a call...I'll be happy to tell you what I'd do with him...weeknights between 5 & 9 CST and anytime on weekends at the number below...if I don't answer, leave me a message & I'll get back to you.

If you have hunted him as you say and he is just boo hooing around on track, I would not hesitate to find a new one and start over. I want a pup that can run a track and do it fast. It don't take one that long to do it if exposed as your has been. You might of burnt him out, but that should not cause him to get hung up on tracks. If he is boo-hooing tracks, it is because he can not run a track like he should be able to.
