brother you are in good company. many of us have lost our dearly beloved dogs. i lost my first dog last june. i had her 12 years. now i'm dreading the loss of my 10 yr old feist. when they get to be 10, their days are numbered.. i've got my dogs' picture right here by my monitor so i can continue looking at her. man i miss that girl.

i keep rabbit dogs myself. i have one in the house for the kids and she is a wonderful dog that makes me smile every day. they arent only our hunting tools, they are our best buddies. if u ever get back into beagles let me know. ill drop a pup off on my way to visit family in sw virginia. i go every summer. in my opinion i think you should get you a new pup.

I am going on 70 had to put my service dog a lab down 2 monts ago she was 12 and by side for 11 years went everywhere I went to all the big hunts everywhere, I put my best hound down and said no more hurts too bad. BUT you might be making a BIG mistake if you quit man it hurts BUT I can not think of not having a hound around they are so SPECIAL just hold on a little while.
Man I feel your pain, but DON"T QUIT BIG MISTAKE . H L Meyer

bad deal .....

man hate to hear that hillbilly .... let me tell ya a story i had 5 years ago . i had just gotten married , found out wife was pregnant , and i had just bought a new house . in the mean time i was moved in the new home but didnt have kennels built or set up so i had hounds just tied out to their boxs . i work in coal mines as a mechanic and had to work on a sunday cause we had a major piece of equipment broke down . i came home after dark was in january and wife wanted to run out to town , we were gone about hour and half came home and found my 10 year old nt ch ch snap dog , and a very nice bred female pup had been stolen , some reason they didnt steal my 4 year old out of snap ? she never really likes strangers - lol . but they were gone about a month and the people started bragging and a off duty deputy sheriff over heard them and the deputy just happened to be NOEL BRALEY that coonhunted and owned dual grand STYLISH RENO , well i got them back , still had my collars on them , and they were in horriable shape , count every rib , back bones . noel gave a bunch of shots to em where he owned a dog supply also , but snap never recovered , found him dead in the lot about three weeks after i got him back . about a month later my lady dog climbed in the lot and hung herself by her collar ( she always climbed since she was 6 weeks old ) . i was so peed off i sold that pup and didnt even cross my mind to coonhunt for 8 months . but i got that drive again , and bought a kennel full , kept with my walker dogs but tried some different lines . my advice is take you some time , take a break for awhile , i think you'll get the drive back !

Hillbilly,

I sort of understand ... I have lost dogs that meant a lot to me. Then again I don't understand.

Is quitting really the right way to honor the memories??

MUST BE GETTING TO SENAMENTAL CAUSE IT REALLY HURT ME BAD AND YOUR RIGHT MAYBE QUITTING MJGHT NOT BE THE RIGHT THING TO DO MY WIFE SAID YOU LOVE TO HUNT THEM DOGS WHY WOULD YOU STOP WITH MY HEALTH PROBLEMS I CANT DO A PUP THE JUSTICE IT NEEDS RIGHT NOW BEEN TALKING ABOUT GETTING ME ANOTHER OLDER RED DOG TO HUNT THAT DONT NEED HUNTED 6 NIGHTS A WEEK WHEN I GET THE MONEY BUT RIGHT NOW I JUST DONT KNOW

Posted by starplott on 12-13-2011 03:47 PM:

Sorry for your loss. I've lost several dogs in last 30 years, never gets easier. It hurts no matter what way you slice it.

What your wife is trying to tell you is she doesn't want to see you end up like an old dog, just sitting around wasting away.

You have to have something you enjoy that gets you up and doing. Getting out of hounds is not easy. Due to antis and wolves I got out in 05. My other half has two sitting around wasting away (15 and 14 yrs old). I know a bunch others who gave it up. We all found something to do.

Several are bird hunters, can handle one dog better than a pack. I still have the police k9's and chessies. Another friend took up restoring old cars.

Either way, you still need to get up and moving. If you don't get back in...find something else. It is not goin to be easy either way...

I MISS my hounds! Though I have had offers to go hunting, it is just not the same w/o my own pack.

Best wishes...

HillBilly

I know what you mean about loosing dogs, it is hard But i always find another may not be the same but I still enjoy my personel dog and my hounds. I have Fibromyalgia and heart and lung problems and hunt with a cane most of time as it helps on hills. I know that's not what you have but I gave up coaching young people to go back to what I loved as a kid and young man. I work everyday for now and I write and try to get more kids into hunting dogs. You are just down right now and rightly so, listen to your wife and other people and fight your way back. My sons often handle my dogs for me or help me, there are always ways. I am 48 in 3 days and being not what I was just a few years ago doesn't make you less of a man just different than you were. God sometime gives us challenges and you are helping that young man out with the beagle. Do what you can and enjoy life.

Sincerely, Jeff And may God walk with you.

Hillbilly the way I got started was going with an older gentelman in bad health. He had the dog, payed for feed, kept him at his house and I feed and took care of him daily. He went with me for a few years and just sat in a chair at the truck until his health
wouldn't let him anymore. He had his ol dog to look at and I gave him updates on how we done. I buried his old dog 2 yrs ago and now have dogs of my own. He comes out when he can and looks at my dogs and I stop and give hunt reports regularly. He still gives advice and tells me old huntin stories. I never thought 15 yrs ago chasing dogs through the woods in the dark would be so much fun. I have learned alot from that ol man and will miss him dearly when he is gone.
