Skinning question

Ok i got a quick question, this is my first year i am actualy skinning out the coon by myself....i am 22 lol yeah should have started earlyer lol..... anyways i skinned a nice sow coon the other day but made a mistake on one of the ears, like the whole ear is missing. I was just wondering how much will this mistake cose me when i turn this coon in.

They dont use the ears or face or tail. It shouldn't matter

It will cost you about $2 off the Skin or more For a Missing Ear .....

Qty. Skinning = More $$

Get a Blow Drier and Fluff, Comb, Clean the Fur ..

Presentation and care of your Hides will bring more $$

its easy to dull ur knife on the face. hanging the coon up by its back leg will help so you can pull the hide more than cut it. i always skin mine in the woods and keep a smiths handheld sharpener in my coat pocket. most buyers will give you a break if u bob a couple tails or make a couple eyes way too big. i doubt u will loose any $ at all unless u have several without ears.

i hang mine too, just bought a new skinnning knife so hopfuly dnt have any more issues..... plannn on skinning them in the woods also.

I don't hang mine up I just step on the legs and pull the hide as I cut. Sure beats looking around for the perfect limb. The ear won't hurt you any. The only thing they use on the hides is a strip across the back. Good luck you will get better and faster.

Forget about trying to hold a razor sharp edge on a knife to skin coons. Go to the hardware store and get ya a 6" flat 2 sided mill bastard file and use it to keep a burr on the knifes edge. Trust me, it will work wonders compared to a sharp fine edge. Also, don't get a knife that the steel is too hard, a use a double bladed muskrat skinning knife and have for years. Did ya buy a tail stripper?? Later, Danny G.

i havnt gotten around to getting a tail stripper yet danny.... ganna have to order one, just been cutting of the tail bone and leaving it in the hide for now.

DO NOT JUST CUT THE TAIL BONE OFF AND LEAVE IN THE HIDE. THAT IS THE BIGGEST PAIN IN THE BUTT WHEN SCRAPING AND STRETCHING FUR. STRIP IT OUT ABOUT HALF WAY DOWN WRAP YOUR FINGER AROUND THE BONE AND GIVE IT A TUG IT WILL SHUCK IT RIGHT OUT AND THE FUR BUYER WILL BE HAPPY. HE WON'T LIKE BONES IN TAILS.

just carry a couple 16 penney nails to pull that tail

If you don't have a tail stripper, you can use a pair of regular slip joint pliers. Just adjust them out and run the tailbone through the back part of the jaws, give it a good pop and they work just as well as a stripper. Don't forget to zip the tail open when you're done.

Good skinning knife

Google Havalon knives and see what you think I bought one and I cannot believe how sharp they are! And when it gets dull just replace the blade! You can't beat the price either!

I would say that it can't get any easier than this. Most people don't have a skinning machine, but use your imagination.. Keep your knofe sharp too..

I got a buddy who is a trapper and has been for over 30 years. He catches a ton of ccon every year and has taught me to use a serrated pelter knife to skin coons and it works better than I ever imagined. Can resharpen them until there is no serrations left and then throw it away. They only cost about $4 a piece and I can skin 40-50 coons with one before its worn out.

When the weather is decent I skin in the woods, when it's cold I pack them out in a backpack and skin them at home in the warmth of my fur shed. Maybe that makes me a wiener, but I don't care...lol. By the way packing 3 20+ lb coons out from a drop to the truck is a great workout!

the guy i take my furs to is verry picky and marks down any thing he can seen you saide you had a dull knife i sharppen mine every time i hit a bone i trap to so i handdle a lot of fur sharp knifeis verry impotine

Pretty good video. Only two things I do differently is to go ahead and cut the front legs off shorter above the wrists. This makes it better for scraping and drying. The other thing is to cut the lower lip off the hide. Leave a little goatee on the carcuss. The bottom lip will rot and curl during the drying process if you leave it on the hide.
