Housebroke coondogs?

So looking at buying another coondog sometime this spring or early summer, my question is about having it be a housebroke dog also. Since I'm still in college i would have to bring it with me that way I could hunt it down here but was just wondering if it would affect it in anyway being a housebroken. It would sleep inside most of the time, during the day be put on a chain while at class.

i see no problems with it lots of housebroke coondogs brian

i have had several coonhounds and rabbit dogs in the past that stayed inside with me and it did not affect their hunt at all

Housebroke

I have a housebroke coondog and I like him better than my other dogs. He is very very intelligent and one hard treeee dog. He sleeps inside of a night and penned up during the day, but will still go out and tree a coon everytime you clip the lead off him and he is only 11 months old (NOT FOR SALE). I don't think it effects them at all.

My 9 yr. old female has been housebroke since 2 weeks after I brought her home from 2001 Autumn Oaks. She is still my house dog and now a certified 'Couch Potatoe'! Some are super easy to break, like her, and others never are. It depends on the dog and how much time and effort you put into it! She sleeps with my daughter and has claimed the corner of the couch as her own during the day.

my other half would kill me if i hunted hard then let one of the dogs in all muddy. i think you would have to give it a bath after every hunt. that would be 6 baths a week..lol..

my opinion is it depends on the dog and owners seen quite a few that it made spleeney of the cold and lasier they have a tendency to be overweight because of more table food kids feeding them etc ive had a couple myself and when i put them back outside and fed them right they stepped it up a notch hunting .my buddys dog just kept fallin out of coyote races so spoiled in the house so i told him to put her back outside she started going to the front on a regular basis after couple weeks as far as humanizing them ya dog definately learns more what you want from them if there in the house have to stress the part depends on the dog and owners because even though a dog knows what you want doesnt mean theyll comply or that some dogs wont run to catch right off the couch or let the cold bother them.

I break all of mine. They learn patience and how to pay attention to command while in the house. As long as you keep there activety level up I see no problem with it. If it gets to muddy just leave it in the box till morning.........If you keep it on chain I would plan on a bark collar expence. You will need it while you are gone. When mine get old enough to hunt a lot I make them an out side dog. I am still able to bring them in any time I want with no trouble.

Thank you, I just wanted to make sure they didnt loose their drive when hunting, i know my last couple dogs have ridden with me around from teh farm to town in the truck and knew the difference between being let out to run around and being let out to hunt. Its amazing how smart they are.

All 3 of my hounds stay in the house day and night.... it doesn't affect them one bit. They sleep in the bed with me.... if they are dirty when i get in from hunting... I take 15 minutes to clean them off. No big deal.

A coondog is a coondog and he is going to hunt coon no matter what else you do with him!

Our 6yo dual champion male has been a housepet since 9 weeks of age, and he had agility titles before he ever was put in his first nite hunt.

Our househounds are whipsmart, thinking hounds, EASY to handle in the woods (you can call them out if you need to) and just seem a lot more clever in the timber in than our 'kennel' hounds.

As for mud, I put them in a crate for 15 minutes so it can dry, then brush off with a towel. They maybe get bathed once a year or if they get into a skunk, which is rare.

When I was growing up, father had German shorthairs, fabulous bird dogs, whose job when they were not hunting was to be us kids' housepets. Everyone told him you had to kennel those birddogs or they would not hunt worth a flip, but that is definately old wives tales! He had some of the best bird dogs in the country!

So yes, go for it!

Both Patty and Jeb are house broke. Jeb still is a house dog, but with age Patty got to where she could'nt hold her blatter all day while I was at work so she had to go back out to the kennel. Thier both GrNt's and if anything I think they hunted even better when thier living in the house and getting more all-around attention.

I have had 2 hounds inside and they were not a problem and were easy to break, They Handled quite well and it was an extra 10 mins a night to clean them up, but i always wipe my hounds down after a hunt and check them over...Eyes ,Ears and feet plus a whole body check for any loose ticks or cuts,,,, . So not to much more work.

My Tazz dog is in when we are home. Other wise he gets an outside kennel when nice. but in the bitter cold of iowa winters any under 0! he has a "pet taxi" in the basement!
and yes he hunts treed 3 on sat night! the biggest thing with a house dog is have a place to give him a bath when he's really dirty, and a good flea and tick treatment!!!!

They won't get the winter acclimation that an outdoor kept dog would unless you have them out a good bit so they can build up a winter coat. Being house kept may also give them an extra couple of years if you live in cold country up north. The long winters do take it out of an outdoor dog, even when they are well fed and sheltered.

I keep one of my 11 hounds inside, and have since he was 5 weeks old. He was extremely easy to housebreak, and has generally been easy to train all around. It has never seemed to affect the way he acts in the woods, though in my own personal situation I'll never raise one I plan to hunt in the house again because I get too attached.

Only downsides to mine that lives in the house...he's very protective. Not ill at all to other dogs or to people 99% of the time, but does NOT like strangers to approach him in the kennel, crate, truck, or box. And put your hands on me or make him feel like you're threatening me? Not going to happen. I don't doubt for a minute he would hurt someone in an effort to protect me, even someone "close" like my fiance'. He is truly MY dog. Even though he stays outside during the day when I'm at work, he also doesn't tolerate heat as well, though that seems to have come about after he got Rocky Mountain last year.

Good luck with your hound. If you aren't like me and get WAY too attached I think you'll find that your dog is easier to work with after spending time with you inside.

If you have kids I would second that a good house hound can be a great pal for them. Our almost five year old bluetick keeps our boys busy in the evenings with playing fetch or laying there wanting someone to pet her tummy. Our seven year old son has grown up with her. She is so glad when he has buddies over and he enjoys showing off her tricks.

CUTTER is house broke and he will go in every chance he gets...
