What would be to young to put a Tri tronics bark limiter on pup?

I have a pup that just does not quit, I am afraid he is to young for a bark limiter and do not want him to blow is vocals, any suggestions on this question or proven techs would greatly be appreciated, thanks.

Bradley,
Teach him young and enjoy him old. If not, you'll hate him forever in the kennel. He'll be quite when he wears it, but when it is off, well you know. Younger you let him know he is not to bark there, the better. I say if the eyes are open, they are ready to recieve lessons to help them through their lives. JMO

Ok so forgive me for being ignorant how do I teach him at 3 months old I love the little burger and do not want him to be scared of me, what would you do in specific directions please?

Posted by on 04-14-2010 03:03 PM:

I sure would be nervous about putting a bark collar on one that young.
Brad, the last time I had one that barked that much that young, I sold her to you. What did you do to get her to shut up? All I remember is that you told me you got her over that real quick! Sorry I don't have a good answer for you.

i got a femail when she was 2 years old and the people that had her before me put a bark limiter on her and she had a big scare on her neck now when i hunt her i cant put a tracking coller on her or she wont bark at all when hunted so make sure you dont leave it on to long or at least check it everyday

Does the pup know the command No? Barking is usually caused by any of a number of issues. Pup is not getting enough mental stimulation. Pup is not getting enough excercise. Pup is seeing distractions such as kids, birds, cats, etc. Or it maybe due to a combination of all 3 things. The last item is the easiest to fix. Put up a blind fence.

Teaching a pup to be quiet can be a task. Simply because you can not always reinforce the rules. I start by teaching my pups the command no at 4-5 weeks old. I do this during feeding time. By the time the pups are 7-8 weeks old they all know the command no. I use the no command to stop any unwanted behavior including barking. Most of the time if I yell no the young dog freezes because he knows I mean business. I have found out through the years the fewer the commands and the more they are reinforced the better relationship you will have with your dog. My most used commands are here, no, up, in, stay, heal, and behind.

My suggestion is make sure you address the 3 issues listed above first! Than work on the barking issue. I have also found out that if a dog needs a severe correction 9 times out of 10 beating the ground next to the dog is more effective than actually beating the dog. A severe beating typically causes either the fright (escape) or fight response. Once a dog's mental state reaches either response the dog does not learn. Opps, getting off the topic. Remember once you start to train him consistancy is the key.

I would also do a search on barking here as it has been discussed many times before. Also John Wick had a pretty good article about barking and bark collars just a few months ago.

Jim she was put in a barn out of site of everything. This pup is out of big d, since I owned big ds daddy till I sold him at 14 months along with big ds grandma and hunted his great grand dad and ma I can recall them throwing pups that barked the heads off, only one lost his voice, big d littermates were just like this puppy I got and they barked the heads off to and they all kept their big mouths, maybe I will just let him bark, don't want to chance it enough to do damage with e collar.

For our young pups I spray them down with water. They get one yell to hush and then they get soaked. Water has proved to be a valuable training tool to keep our dogs quiet in the kennel. In southeast GA its ok for them to be wet most times of the year where as I probably wouldn't in Indiana though! Lol Just my thoughts.

Hey Brad, I just got two Big D pups here myself. Both are around 12 weeks old. Off a bitch by Nocturnal Skipper and a littermate sister to Skeans Dolly. The female belongs to Bellar and the male belongs to me and Whitted. Both got huge bawl mouths but are kennel quiet unless I'm out around the kennel. Guess we better stay in touch on these pups. We'll prolly both need some help....lol.

Yep lets do that, I will tell you something about that top bloodline, alot of that early starting tree power comes from Tree Talkin Bama and the Lou Lou Belle, them dogs threw some of the best tree power in this country, Tree Talkin Lizzy, Salt Creek Kiss, Tree Talkin Tess, Lady Di, Tank, Tango, Ms. Piggy, Big, Reese, the list goes on some of the best I ever been in the woods with is in Big D bloodline, I named this pup BIG TIME!!

Posted by Bradley E. Hall on 04-15-2010 11:50 AM:

Jim Big Time finally has shut up, it took me 1 hour of enforcing the no command and taking a stick and hitting the side of the fence every time he barked. I hope he did not blow his vocals because when he does bark now it sounds very weak and hoarse. BTW Big Time is litter mate to your puppies out of D, if their mommy is the Ch Gr Nt Ch Jill!

I used to go out and knock the snot out of young dogs when they barked. They learned not to bark when they, basically, knew I was there or around. The last three young dogs I had/have had the E-collar put on them around 3 months old. At that age you don't need a lot of stimulus. Breaking their attention is the initial issue. On the last young dog and this one in the kennel now I had to step up a half a notch. The last two dogs were not effected one bit in the woods. The 10 month old is running and treeing his own coon, strikes a track as soon as he smells it and trees hard. I think the key is like everything else with the E-collar....start low and work your way up.

I wouldn't use a bark collar on one that young. I will put a shock collar on one as soon as they are big enough to cary it. Big differance in the two. Bark collar has no control or heat setting.
That is why I use the Dogtra collar. They have a rheistat switch so you can give them just enough they can feal. Tell them quiet and then a small shock till they figure out it happens everytime they bark. Once they figure out the command and the punishment for the comman you can make the punishment fit the crime.
Allows you to train with out the chance of cowing the dog........

Grady, I'm not disagreeing with you about the age factor but the TriTronics Bark Limiter does have 5 settings from barely noticeable to chit-your-pants strong.

That would be a lot better. I have never had one like that and could see were it would be a lot better. I just like to teach mine to shut up when told but know if you have to leave one barking when you go to work you have to do something.

Brad, I haven't had any problems from putting a bark collar on very youngs dogs (3.5 mos and up). If they are big enough to wear it, I'll put one on their neck if necessary. I do teach them what hush means, so they KNOW I don't like pointless noise.

The one thing I don't want to do is to make them man shy from thupping on them for barking. Sometimes that's the first real consistent interaction they have with a human, getting thupped on for barking. That's probably ruined more dogs then anything else. I just never felt thupping on one was a good way to start a relationship, especially with a very young dog.

The easy fix for that is a bark collar no ruined mouth, no man shy dogs and no needless noise. Mine don't bark when I feed, don't bark when I'm choosing which one to hunt that night and don't bark when I messing around the kennel. And none are shy, works for me.

I got a pup out of D he barks between every bite while eating ! No joke lol He's quiet along as long as no1's out and about but the second he see someone...

Men I am telling you its in their bloodline, Big D's brother Reese ( Kip Gordon bought him) barked his dang head off, the thing that amazes me is they did not loose their mouths and they were all good mouth dogs. Another thing that I have only seen the Bama bloodline line of dogs do and I wonder if Big D does this and thats when you put them in a truck dog box they will cross their legs over each other between the bars of the door, cracks me up but almost everyone I had did this.

Rockett42 what do you mean you used a paper bag LOL.

I don't doubt it is in there blood but that doesn't mean it can't be controled........or that it shouldn't be.
