CEDAR SHAVINGS AND BEDDING STRAW IS WHAT I USE.

STRAW IS CHANGED ONCE A WEEK. IF THE WEATHER IS BAD~RAINY~IT IS CHANGED EVERY DAY.

MAY SEEM LIKE ALOT OF WORK, BUT IT'S WORTH IT TO ME. I SHOW MY HOUNDS AND LIKE THEM TO STAY AS CLEAN AS POSSIBLE.

Grass Hay dosen't break down as fast as straw. Used Cedar Chips for ever until I had a Show Dog that was allergic wow she got ugly quick big knots and sores on her for about a month Vet said it was the oil in the cedar and not to use it on puppies at all went to grass hay and have never had a problem and my dogs shine like new pennies.

Cedar Shavings or Hay

I live where the weather can get pretty frigid and what I use for bedding has been Cedar Shavings and straw. Straw not hay. Straw is hollow and is a better insulator than hay. I have also found that one of my dogs is also allergic to Cedar shavings and I started using Pine Shavings instead. This has worked significantly better. Although as of recently a thought has crossed my mind to try using shredded paper. My office goes through bags of shredded paper a week. I figure it can't hurt to try, it's made out of wood like cedar or pine shavings and it won't cost me a thing.

I use shavings during the summer for all my dogs except for one (he's allergic). During the winter we use a grass hay, usually Coastal Bermuda if it isn't outrageously priced due to drought. Never really had problems with either. I've always heard straw would give a dog the mange/skin problems but can't say I know from experience...

We don't get down below freezing very often and we've used grass hay in our dog houses for years. Sometimes we put some pine shavings or a mix of pine and cedar under the hay. Our dogs are almost always loose in the main yard though and they prefer to sleep on their couch on the porch.
If we have to kennel a dog at night (usually just females in heat) we'll sometimes put them in our puppy kennel which has a large dog "shed" in it. There are blankets in there for them to sleep on.

two inches of cedar shavings at the bottom and grass hay on top. Keeps fleas away and doesn't irritate the skin.

grass hay is another name for weeds, because thats a lot of what it is. No telling what you will get sometimes with hay. I would use straw anytime but never hay. Save hay for feeding horses or cows. As far as the mange and hay thats quite possible.

That's what I have always heard~but to each thier own!

I have seen the "fields" of hay thats bailed around here. I feel right sorry for the cows in the winter time! Aiken is horse country so you can get good hay from the feed stores~it is really expensive!
Almanac says bad winter down here this year. We'll see!

NO CEDAR SHAVINGS!

Cedar shavings can irritate eyes and nasal passages, burn the hide & cause sores. And contrary to the popular "tale" they DO NOT DETER FLEAS! They just smell good to humans. If you use shavings, use pine. We don't have straw in this area so I use hay when the weather turns cold and usually need to add more in about 2 weeks as it eventually breaks down. I bought some straw when attending a coonhound event in Indiana - it was great bedding but broke down more quickly than hay. We have good grass hay here & it isn't full of weeds. As for mange - that's just another "tale" as mange is not grown or developed in hay or plants - it's an ANIMAL disease.

use pine shavings. hay is bad for having fleas & mites in it. some dogs are allergic to the cedar shavings.

My favorite is second cutting orchard grass which has no stems. Just sprinkle a little sevin dust on it to prevent ear mites. Fill the doghouse about half full and the dogs can bed up in it and stay warm in cold weather.

Umm, not true. The oils in cedar shavings are a natural pest control.

People put cedar particleboards in their closets/chest to prevent moths.

The problem is once the cedar oil has dried out, the use as a natural pest control is gone.

So no, it's not just "tale" about cedar.

I either use pine shavings or wheat straw in dog boxes and use wheat straw to put down in the pen if it is muddy from rain and what not. I prefer the pine shavings in the box versus the straw, but either one is fine. Pine shavings you don't have to worry about the reacting to them like you do with cedar shavings.

Are any of you in the deep south? My issues are humidity, FLEAS, and allergies. I have my whole kennel in concrete, I have had dirt floors, plywood and even a powder coated expanded metal floors. In this part of the south it seems that any fungus, disease or insect will flourish! and I've gotta tell you Comfortis is expensive with this many dogs!!I have never tried the straw, it was actually my next option. Grass hay as most people know can be a bit dusty and I worry about it being too dusty, and as far as shavings go I have had nothing but problems. It may just be the conditions around here, i dont know, but even when changed frequently they still posed the same problems. All my dogs had allergy and red belly issues that I never had before and never have had after. BUT I have to do something about the knobby knees and bald spots from laying on hard surfaces. It is just so hot here i'm not sure what to do! Also what are some good suggestions for whelping boxes? I need to keep fleas and newborn respiratory systems in mind! I was almost thinking of layering news paper so I can easily clean up after birth??

I use grass hay only in the winter. I clean out the houses when the temps are above 50 for the lows . had ear mite problems with oat straw . I also have used corn stalks , awful dusty but worked good and its cheap . Keep the houses off the ground and throw in a couple slabs of grass hay with a flap over the door and good for 20 below zero. never had much luck with shavings , like others said , skin problems and dogs didnt seem warm

cedar oil

cedar oil may be a natural product.but a dog in a tight doghouse filled with this natural oil sure isn't natural. cedar oil is removed from some shavings making it more tolerable to the animal laying on it most dosent have it removed and is dangerous, it vwill and does kill puppies as the membranes in the nose and throt become iritated to the point the pups bleed both internaly and externaly. older dogs will burn there hide from it to the point they blister and the hair falls out. i have a nephew who is a vetinarian and has proof of this.
natural be ****ed how many dogs have you seen sleeping in cedar trees.
long ears has mentioned this more than once

GRASS HAY ---BURMYDA [sp] grass hay --not clover or alfalfa--I guess any king of grass hay would work ---I get my hay out of MISS. when I can --like they have said the grass hay doesn't brake down like straw --straw is good but you have to change it about every [2] weeks at least --the straw is stem is hollow it help to insulate
