keeping a pup in the house ???????

do yall think keeping a pup ( 8 weeks old ) in the house until its old enough to start training will hurt the pups progress?
i wasnt sure if the kids playing with it all the time would make it not want to hunt when it got older. i had an old timer tell me if you dont make hunting the only fun thing for the pup it will loose interest. is this true? or do you keep your pups in the house?

I have always kept my Bluetick female in the house. She has no problem with interest in hunting. All she has to do is see me going to the room where I keep my light, boots, etc. and she goes nuts. She's a great house dog, but in the woods she is all business.

I take them to my mom's and let them run loose until they start getting into trouble. She babies them pretty good and my nieces are around a lot. I can't stand dogs on the house.

we had raised pups in the house and love to hunt. while in the house they learn some obience. yes they get spoiled. we have one female that is ah house dog and has her puppies in our bedroom and raised their until sold or to big then move down
stairs. we have a litter right now. i love to lay in bed and watch them. they are so cute but stay don't stay little long!

I bought a 5-month old female last year and kept her in the house. I didn't really mess with her on coon until she turned a year old and boy did she ever look impressive. She's still in the house today, bugs me almost every night to go hunting.

Every hound I have that I have had since a pup has stayed in the house with me....Actually all the dogs I have have stayed in the house at some point in time....When my bluetick female got hit & broke her leg she stayed in the house with us for abought 4 months if not longer than that....Laid on the couch all day, ate tabel scraps, slept in the bed with me....First night out after recovery she treed 2 singles on a dog that had been hunted the whole time she was laid up.....

It has always been the case for me that the more time you spend with them as " pets," the better they handle in the woods. Most all dogs I've had since pups I really didn't need to use a lead on while pleasure hunting, but when you unsnap it during a hunt you better get out of the way.

Can't see how it would hurt them if they got the hunt in them they will be just as interested wether they were kept in the house or not.
My latest pup has been living in the house, to soon to tell how she will be in the woods but being in the house has really helped her relationship with people. In the past all our pups aren't used to men being around them and usually end up having problems with that when it comes time to hunt them.

I keep all my pups in the house untill there about 3 or 4 months old. I find it helps with there handling later on and since i've done this I've never raised a shy pup.

I think letting kids play with it and the pups and kids a aggrevating each other to death is one of the best things for a pup its always worked good for me.plus its a great enjoyment to watch my son almost get his pants pulled off and chewed on LOL!!!

My male is curled in a bawl on th couch right Now, but he'll be hunting in about an hour , he has a kennel outside he is in there at night and durning the day when i'm at work and its cleaner than my other kids room ( should send them buggers out there and give there rooms to him probaly wont have to ask 15 million times to get them cleaned, LOL)

you can teach them to listen to you real fast. Luke has spent a night or two in the house. Wife did'nt know it-- she say,this house smells like a dog.

I have hounds in the house and think there`s nothing wrong with it. But now the problem, what happens when at a year old and the wife and kids are attached to the dog it becomes obvious it`s not going to make it? I sweat that problem everyday. What happens when the dog works but just doesn`t suit your hunting style? Think the kids will let you sell it to someone who likes that style dog?

That right there is the only problem and the biggest one. not only do the wife and kids get attatched but so do you and pretty soon you got a bunch of realy nice house dogs and no coon dog!

Cornell was kept in the house until he was 4 or 5 months old. I think most would say he is a coondog.

We just got a new pup, she's 10 weeks old and loves the couch right by the woodstove..... she is so cute. We always keep our pups in side untill at least 6-7 months, which is also when we start showing them coon.

Doesn't seem to hurt his interest in coon though (he's 9 weeks in that picture), as you can see....and he LOVES exploring outside. BJ, your Sassy looks so much like my pup!

So on nights that your dogs get muddy and your wore out when you get in what do you do then? Bath them? I think my kids would haunt them so bad the pup would be going deep by the time its 4 months old.

Thought about bringing one in but always had a pet coon and he ran all over the house he was litter box trained and never had any hounds taunt him so i doubted that would work out very well. Had to get rid of him as he seemed to like my saltwater fish a little too much. Funny pet though would play like a cat and was pretty well behaved for the most part but he was an alcoholic..any kind of drink he loved to get drunk. I know that sounds funny but ive seen him so drunk he could barely walk across the back of the couch. That was some funny stuff. He slept in bed with the kids. Was trapped as a kitten and was meaner than a pitbull with rabies kept him in a cage and one night he decided to let himself out and then he wasnt mean at all...in fact he was one of the most gentle pets I ever had. Sometimes he would scratch you a little playing but, never would mean to.
