What's in a name??

I was just wanting to hear other peoples opinion on the registered names we give our coonhounds in UKC. I do not know about you but i read my magazines and just shake my head at some of the names that i read. (I read all the winners in the back of the Bloodlines.) You know the ones where they name their dog after every famous dog in their dogs pedigree. Have not seen this kinda thread before and just wanted to hear what you all have to say. Take care...

i do notice a ton of dogs out there with Stylish in them. I myself try to keep some part of the name so people can tell what the dog goes back to.

Well, with UKC's name change policy, anyone thinking down the road about selling their titled dog for big bucks best have a generic name on it because there are plenty out there that won't buy a dog with someone else's name on it.
Myself, I would breed to the dumbest name in the world if I thought it would produce me a winner.

We use our kennel name in front also and then we try to incorporate a piece of the dogs past and a piece of their future

Example: Hoo Hoo Hollow --- Kennel name (a place in W.V. that really does exist, my father-in-law grew up there)

Moonlight --- goes back to the sire (Moonlight Weed, which is the son of Nighty Nite Moonlight Kate)

Koda --- A piece of the future (which stands for Kiss Ol' Dale's A@@)

Mayberry Blueticks...I name my dogs after characters on the show. My dogs are identified with the area.

Know what you call a cow with no legs? Ground Beef
Know what you call a hog with no legs? Ground Hog
Know what you call a dog with no legs? Nuthin....He can't come.

Nobody's perfect...........Let me introduce my self.......I'm Nobody.LOL!!

They found a head floating down the river the other day with a note in between its teeth. The note said:

" I ain't got NoBody."

I try to be serious......but it ain't easy.

I know one thing.Dont name one GATOR'S WILD FIGHTEN HURRICANE!!!!!!!!!! He will have no choice but to be mean LOL. Really I've noticed some of the dogs names in the past on pkc scratched for fighting list. LOTS of them have rough names on them. I dont know if they live up to there names or they see alittle something out of the dog and name it after that. I may name my next BIG MONEY. I dont know if it would win me big money or cost me big money.Probably cost me.My luck it would kill someones prized 10,000 dollar show horse or something LOL LOL!!!!!!!

We always put our last name in front of our dogs. We come up with the rest. I try to find call names that aren't used often. We try and be original. I mean you can't throw a rock without hitting a Belle or Blue. LOL. Amy Myrick

My first dog I used my last name in front. Then I used my kennel name on the other. But on my pup I had to go with my last name on his.Hatfield's Real McCoy it just seemed to fit LOL.I try to name my dogs something I like and sounds good, but it doesn't matter what their name is.What sounds good to me really is when they come on the tree hard and have the meat.It don't matter about the name then.

I think a name is whatever you make of it. Some like common names, others (like me) like to come up with something original. If I pull names from the pedigree- as a general rule it will promote a theme but will not be just duplicating the names in the pedigree. For instance, there are too many "Jesse James" out there. People use it even if their dog wasn't a direct descendant of Jesse James. It's misleading. That's the same reason that I don't think someone should necessarily name a dog "Razor's......" unless it is actually OUT of Razor. Again- misleading.

I like a male to have a big strong name in case he becomes something special. I want people to say "oh, I want to breed to the Razor dog"-- and not be ashamed of the dog's name-- I want to breed to the peewee dog. You get the idea.

As a general rule, even if I use the parents name to get a theme, the pups name will be unique. I have ONE exception-- a new puppy that we call Molly. We named her littermate sister Tree Rizin' Over The Limit and call her Speed. Molly was originally to go back to the dam owner (we borrowed her for the breeding) and the dam's name is Molly so Rob said regarding the pup-"let's just call her Molly after her mom until she leaves". Then we decided to buy her and raise them both so the pup we were already calling Molly- we decided to name Tree Rizin' Just Call Me Molly cuz that's exactly how she got her name. <G>

We like original names though- here are a few we have in the kennel right now:

Tree Rizin' Armed & Dangerous (Intruder - out of Felon)
Tree Rizin' Razor's Loaded Rifle (Rifle- out of Razor)
Tree Rizin' Dark Side of the Moon (Kryptonite)
Tree Rizin' Lil' Miss Sure Shot (Pistol- out of Billy The Kid semen)
Tree Rizin' Chasin' Dreams (Dream)
we just sold- Tree Rizin' Eye On Saturn (Saturn- out of Venus)

that's just a few.

Plott pup name

We are so proud of our dual champion Blitz that the one pup we kept from his last litter is named "Son of a Blitz". Get it? How many times do you think we'll slip up on that name (sometimes on purpose, sometimes not!)

There are a few breeders that come up with some awesome names and Katina, you're one of them. Scott and I will see one here of there and tell each other "how'd she come up with that?". <G>

names

Connie & Katina..You are getting what i am trying to say or get at. I would like to breed to a male dog that has a strong name not a wimpy or wacked out crazy name. That is just me. I love the great names you guys come up with for your dogs. I also like to incorporate a line or a certain dog from my dog's pedigree but never name it after something that it is not directly out of. I try to take some pride in how and what i name my dogs. If people don't think that others stand up and listen to a great name they are sadly mistaken. Sometimes the name says it all. I named my Banjo Rick dog like this. His dad was called Bland County Rick but his call name was Banjo. So i took the name Banjo and put it first and the Rick last." Banjo Rick " I had fun with it and thought it was kinda good. I have seen people kinda try this pattern themselves. Too many good names to have a "lady" , "Blue", "red", "hammer" etc...etc.. Just my opinion...

JMO but I like seeing some of the old names hanging around with the lines of dogs. I think it would be a awsome tribute to a hound of the past who pups are out of to keep that name going on and on.

Posted by Melanie H. on 01-05-2007 07:27 PM:

I like to pull from the pedigree on most also.. I have two pups right now, one a walker pup who is a granddaughter of Babe's Stylish Banjo on the sire's side and Maggard's Stylish Jet on the dam's side.. So Stylish might be used a lot, but with both side's I came up with "Stylish Baby Jane" . And my english pup is "Oregon's Lightfoot Scarlett". She is Lightfoot bred, a redtick and lives in Oregon. I am going to use my kennel name OutWest on my litters born here, but figure these pups were not born in my kennel so I can't take the credit.
I also like to use place's or landmarks etc. Beside the English pup we have a bluetick named "Nick's Rogue River Blue Mandie" The Rogue River is where we spend most of the summer salmon fishing

i think makes a difference in different ways
catchy names do probably intice people to breed to

for example who would breed to 'PR' SlowTrackin Ill Roger

another key is a short name thats easy to call in a night hunt
id hate to see someone beat me to the call while i was tryin to get his name out lol

We always use our last name and then usually Blue(since they are blueticks and then there call name
ex Clements' Blue Posh
but we have bought dog from someone else and used part of there kennel name
ex Clements' Northern Blue Sadie (she was out of Northern Blue Levi)

The last 2 pups I named have a little bit different names, Clements' Nothin' Fancy and Shepard's Back Allie(my huntin buddies pup).

Our Dual Ch male is named:

CH NITECH "PR" Hovious' Blue Jet's Turbo

Hovious'- our last name

Blue- he is a bluetick

Jet's- his sire is Jet 6

Turbo- a turbo is the "power pack" of a jet!

Very fitting for this young male, he is the only male we kept out of the litter and he is living up to his name.
