Be honest... who else?

So a couple weeks ago I was pretty excited to go out hunting. Went through the usual preparations... charged up the light, got my waders in the truck, filled the thermos with coffee, double checked the GPS was charged, loaded the gear into the truck, and kissed the wife goodbye. Been a couple weeks since I'd been out so was anxious as I got into the truck.

I fortunately only made it about 100 yards down the road when I remembered..... I didn't load up my dog! Ha! Got me wondering who else has done this- and does anyone have any funny stories about actually making it to your hunting spot and then realizing you don't have a dog?

I went to a hunt one time. I entered my dog, casts were drawn out and we went to the woods. When my cast arrived and I went to get my dog out he wasn't there. Someone had stolen him. After raising Cain for a minute, I started thinking about the last time that I had seen him and realized that I had never loaded him up.That was pretty embarrassing.

Was hosting Plott sectional several years ago. I went to club early and tied my dog to chain link fence behind truck . Gave him water and checked on him several times between events as I was busy working events. I was taking entries and entered him in hunt. Helped draw casts and drew out going about 2 hours away. I got about half way to woods and remembered my dog was still tied to fence. I told cast to go on but they insisted I go back to get dog. I did but don't remember how cast went. Good hunting and stay safe.

I have found that if I plan a hunt. I ALWAYS forget something. Yes was going about 100 miles to a hunt, real proud of myself. Running every thing through my mind about what I had loaded. Yep Cain was in his kennel with his t5 on. I was embarrassed and I was by my self.

Went hunting with a guy I just met so he wanted to take me to his spot so I rode with him. We hunted half the night he dropped me off back at my house I put all my gear up and went to unload my dog I forgot to get her out of his truck I didn't know his phone number and no idea where he lived. Now he's got the best dog I've ever owned in his truck I was worried for sure. But he delivered her back that evening. I have also forgotten my light before luckily for me I hunt 5 minutes from the house.

Swamped trucks

I have forgot everything at different times. From light, boots ,pop, and yes once dog. One night we meet at Lyonels I hopped in Paul's truck away we went. Made it about 1/2 mile and I said my dog is still in my truck. Lol it happens.
A buddy of mine and an old man went one night. The old feller picked him up and drove him about an hour north. And yep got to the spot the old feller said dang it. Turned around drove all the way back and got his dog turned around and drove all the way back up north. My buddy said they made one drop came home. 4 hrs on the road 15 min of hunting. lol happy I wasn't along that night.

Drove 40 miles to go hunting one time and didn’t realize I’d left my dogs at home till I started to turn out. Leave something quite often. I’ve got a truck primarily for hunting so I try to keep my equipment in it all the time.

Another ooops moment. Back in the late 60's, our huntin rig was 1955 4 door chevy 6 cylinder stick (lots of memories). My uncle and I went out, loaded the carbides and walked toward the timber waited a good long time. Unc said have you heard your dog, I could back then lol, No we walked and walked all night. Let's go home we will find them in the morning, With in 10 feet of the car we both asked did you turn the dogs loose. Answer NO. Wish I had the car now.

Dog

I went hunting one night with a buddy of mine, got to our hunting spot and I had locked my dog in the box and left key at the house, we just hunted his dog. Another time I left my hunting boots at the house and the spot I was hunting had a creek to cross, lucky for me I had a pair of boots in my tool box. I have left lights, Garmin and even my gun at home, if you hunt long enough, you WILL leave things at home, even your dog. Dave

Back around 08-09 rushed home, loaded up and headed to pkc walker days, get about 15 min down the road and realize dog never got loaded up.

Then just this past Saturday a local buddy was headed over to hunt with me, hit a deer on the way over...went back to his house to swap trucks. Met him at a woods, he forgot his boots in the other truck...after first drop went to my house to grab him my extra pair and then when we got to second drop he then realized his own boots were beside dog box in current truck 🤣

Not us, our dogs are waiting by the door ready to go as soon as we start getting out the collars.
I did have a friend that boarded her horse. When she unloaded her horse at a trail ride, someone asked her when she got a new horse. She loaded the barn owner's horse!!!

I lost my truck one night. I turned out and after awhile went to the dogs. They were close to another dirt road. I turned the wrong way. Then it started raining. A guy came by and offered me and my dogs a ride. I and my dogs were riding in the back of his truck even as it poured rain. I directed the guy to my truck. It wasn't where I thought it should be. I thought someone had stolen it. I went to another place and it wasn't there either. I was so confused.
The poor guy was patient with me until I came to my senses and remembered where I had left my truck.

Done that. Hunting out of season. Hid it a little too well.

But, what I've lost more than anything is myself. Sometimes, when one of my daughters is with me, I'll hear: "Dad, do you know where we're at"? I'll shoot back: "No, but it looks familiar. I think I've been lost here before."

This is the best post I've ever read on this-here chatbox... Think I will put it in my column -- And here's my story. I loaded my dog and went to a store about 45-min away to meet some men who wanted to hunt with my dog. Met them -- turned out -- and I brought the wrong dog! And the dog I brought, had never treed a coon by himself in his whole life ... and treed one that night, while the Nite Ch the guys were wanting to "see go" was home in the kennel. And by the way, that was the ONLY coon 'Ole Lead' ever treed by himself....

And I put the wrong lock on the dog box @ B&T Days one year-- the lock I had no key to; could not get the dog out, and Ray Fletcher cut it off with his bolt cutters!

Brother N Law was going pheasant hunting in South Dakota, he lives in St Louis. He went to the airport loaded all his gear in his plane and away he went. The airport called sister when they noticed both dogs in the shipping crate at the hanger. She called her man and asked him how the dogs were enjoying the ride. He was over Nebraska by then.

I used to stop by an old man's kennel and take one of his dogs with me when ever I went. Each time I would take any dog I wanted. One night I didn't take one but on the way back I, being completed absent minded, swung by the old man's kennel to drop off the dog I didn't pick up. I went to my box and looked in one side and then the other and I started to panic. I was thinking the dog must have jumped out or I forgot to load it up when I left. My mind was racing. Just as I was about to haul azz to the forest, I saw the extra collar I always put on the old man's dogs and again, I came to my senses.
