Making $$$$

Back when I was a kid growing up , I set and listen to Dad and his coon hunting friends talk about last night hunts 74-75 I was 12 -13 years old , If I was lucky enough to have went along I would think , I sure don't remember it going that way , If you go to a hunt now , You will get 4 different stories of how the hunt went .I don't remember talking about babbling and slick trees or dog fights , As I got older 16-17 , I figured out I was the Grunt , carried all the coons carried the gun , so Dad could shoot the coon , Im not sure he let me carry the bullets , My fondest memories is how Dad would bark like the dogs describing his hunts , My first trip to make Money was to southern Iowa a place called Corden I think, it was right on the Missouri line , Dad had always took a friend with him and they split the Money , But this year I was ask to go and Dad said he would give me $1 a coon I'm thinking ok 200 -300 coon $200-$300 dollars , Not knowing how much work this would be I am thinking hell yeah money money money , to my surprise I worked my a$$ off I didn't have my driver License yet and he let me drive some back roads during the day looking for places to hunt , It was a awesome time in my life , I didn't think about pedigrees all I knew was the names of the dogs and I was with my Dad

My point is coon hunting isn't about the money or titles its about the love of our dogs and the love of family and friends , Oh yeah I think 186 coon we got my first year of serious Hide hunting

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you

Some of my favorite memories of your dad and uncles was the way they recapped the hunt also!!! I was a youngster but I listened to every word they said and believed it without a doubt! lol . Gail Huffman was also very good at telling the stories also, When they all got together it was a overload of training and dog stories. Your dad and uncles were brothers and they supported each other as such, but i remember most was how competitive they were among themselves. In no way was one gonna let the others out do or beat them!!!

I also grew up listening to Duke Baldridge and his stories, I dont remember him and the Eads clan together, but that would have been a gathering that legends are made of!!! LOL

Thanks for the post and Happy Holidays to you and your family...

I still can't wait till it gets dark to cutem with my boys and friends or hell by myself, pedigree doesn't matter to me ,just love too see good dog work been at this for along time, and hope to be able to for yrs to come. Have fun and thank god everyday for what he allows us to do.

When I was a kid, the holidays were all about getting together with family and going hunting. Now everyone just watches TV or eats and then goes their seperate ways. Hunting used to keep us together. My dad was a rabbit hunter and had beagles. My brothers and I were the "jump dogs". On Thanksgiving my Uncles, cousins and brothers would get up early and hunt on Granddad's farm until time to come in and eat. Those were much simpler times it seems like.

We say its not about the money, but would your dad have traveled to Iowa if coons were worth 50 cents?

I can have fun coon hunting with my son, or friends, but I am always turning a dog loose with intentions of making it better, and making it able to either win $, or worth more $.

My fondest memories were going to sell furs with my grandfather that we trapped and hunted. $$$ makes the world go round

To each his own I guess. I travel all over the country and don't sell any hides or hunt for money. If I worried about the money, it would take all of the "fun" out of it. Whatever happened to the guys that just do it for the fun of it? : p

Neither Chuck's or my family hunted coons. He got me a Redbone/walker for a Christmas present...not to hunt with, but for a pet. She turned out to be an awesome coon hound. We hunted because #1 we loved to be out with her, but in the late 70's early 80's when we were working in factories for less tha $5/hr, coon hunting was a GREAT way to make xtra $.
Our brothers, Chuck's dad and our friends enjoyed going out with us occassionally.
We have great memories (and a few bad ones) from hunting back then. Now, the guys we hunted with r dead, can't get through the woods anymore or too tired to be out at night.
We weren't very happy when Chuck unwrapped his Christmas 🎁 almost 4yrs ago and there was a beautiful Redbone puppy wanting out, but spending time with Ruby in the woods most nights is pure pleasure.

Josh would you still hunt, if you didn't have any income from it? I enjoy it just as much if not more now than. I did when they were 30 or 40 bucks apiece. By the way thanks for making a great squaller. I love them

Great job Toad every youngster deserves the chance. The more enjoyable we make it the longer our sport will go on.

I would. But I don't think I would hunt if there were no competition hunts. I love to get a dog to competition level and see them succeed.

Glad you like the squaller bud. Thanks for the kind words

It's funny how things change oh I am am still very competitive I like to win I want to have a good dog on the end of my leash I don't go to a hunt hoping to win by handling I try to pack heat when I go but there is one thing you can't beat Father Time between the styles of dogs changing and my age plus to many miles I just occasionally go to a hunt anymore but I still love it and I would have to win a million dollars just to break even lol. But the best feeling I have ever had in coonhunting was having a good enough dog back in the day during hide season and knowing you had treed enough coons to have enough money to buy Christmas and maybe some left for somthing needed. Only the ones that have enough money to compete at a high level in the $$$ make at the most their money back you don't drive long distances, pay high entries, live in motels for weeks at a time and eat for free most got rich backers that it's just a tax write off anyways.

Great post Darrell!!

Makes me think of days & memories gone by. Lots of folks who made time for me & allowed me to tag along when they did not have to. I was ignorant to many of the negatives back then, & was just tickled too death to see some coon get treed.

A lot of of those folks are no longer with us or do not hunt anymore. I gave up on any illusions of making money in this game many moons ago. The challenge of trying to come up with a good hound is the main fuel for the tank these days. I guess any feller that hunts a Blue dog is behind the 8 ball right out of the chute

A Happy Thanksgiving to you & yours too Darrell!

Mr. Darrell

Memories man that is a big word and carries a lot of meaning. Going on 75 and sometimes I just fall back into the past and just wonder if I am having as much fun now as then. This sure has been a great trip these black dog have taken me on, met some of the finest people in the world and had a few nice hounds along the way. Still hunt a lot about 5 nights a week but not on Sunday. Dad never did so nether do I. The hunting sure has changed in the past years. Never had enough coons where I hunted to sell so the $$$ never entered the picture just the fun, remember when the tools of the trade was a pair of old milking boots, a ax, and a 5 cell flash light with a toe sack slung over your shoulder. Load um up in the trunk of the car put a small log in the door and tie it down and away we would go.Then we got fancy Dad bought a truck and then business picked up.
God Bless and have a great Thanksgiving. H L

The secret to making a million dollars coon hunting is simple, start out with 10 million dollars.

Posted by Darrell Eads on 11-24-2016 01:40 PM:

Josh I guess it can be about money , We did kill 18 coon out of 1 barn , I think that was more of a blood sport , Having the best dog does matter but getting beat by a lesser dog doesn't make a person lower his standards , driving a 1000 miles to kill a deer or a bear cant be about the money , I think my point was everyday that goes by , every holiday that passes is one less we have with friends and family , We should cherish each one of them and Love what we do , If its catching a fish or killing a coon for money or food makes a person happy That's what life is all about ,,, Gobble Gobble

Amen Darrel.I used to enjoy hunting with my Dad.I used to enjoy coon hunting itself a lot more.He trains and hunts dogs a lot different then I do.He also wants a different kind of dog then I do.Either way he taught me a lot about hunting growing up and I have a lot of memories of the coons we treed.I still got the old Winchester I shot my 1st coon out with and I can take you to the patch of woods I killed it in.It seems I have lost a lot of the desire I had because of spinning my wheels and a lot of money on young dogs.I can only hope that as I change the style of dogs I hunt that the desire to hunt hard and hit the hunts will come back.I am thankful for all the family and friends I have made thru this crazy sport.Alot of good memories have been made.Happy Thanksgiving and God bless y'all.
