Pro Handlers----

I heard that some of the BIG DOGS get paid $50,000.00 plus a new truck and all expensives paid to handle TOP DOGS??

If true, I would call that a job---but without any benefits like vacation, sick days, Holidays or 401-K---not sure, if you where a family man that it would be worth it.

What does anyone else think???

I've ran with some of the big dogs & can assure you that's not the case, Dustin Weed is probably the biggest winning handler & has the biggest winning dog right now & that's what he does for a living. Andy his boss is like a step dad to me, he makes 1,000 a month, all expenses paid, all the Open event $ he keeps, any vehicle maintenance Andy splits with him, all the checks that go to Andy they split. Andy said that from what he's won that he's a little in debt but not much at all & it's well worth it.

Tony I was looking and curious if Weed wouldn't be the youngest to have earned as much as he has in winnings thus far. Quite an accomplishment at any age but he appears to still be in his early 20s.

He's 21 years old & has a wife that understands that's his job... Those are hard to find, he also has 1 of the best bosses in the business, they don't make many like Andy, that man would give the shirt off of his back to anyone

I know At times what I do feels like a second job and I'm definitely going in the hole!

Posted by Richard Lambert on 04-14-2016 02:08 PM:

I learned quite a few years back that when you start getting paid, it becomes a job. And then it becomes work. Work is not fun. If you want to coon hunt for fun then you had better not get paid for it. When it is your dog and you lose, it is the dog's fault. When you are getting paid and you lose, it is your fault. When you try to "race" you can get burnt out fast and so can your dog. Tony, I feel for you, I have been there myself. Take a month off and you should be ready to go back at it. How many times has everyone "stood up" a dog because the dog got burnt out? Humans are no different.

When I was a fulltime handler for Butch Roeder. My starting salary was a pepsi and a bag of cool ranch darito's at the local convenient store each time we hunted. He finally gave me a raise after 3 years. He finally let me start driving his truck and he bought me brand new 17 volt sunburst and a compass. I think I was underpaid. bwahahahahahahahahahaha

They only way a handler is going to make 50k a year is if he won one of the big money based world championships and the owner let him keep all the winnings and paid him 1k a month plus expenses year round.
I have been in this sport long enough to know that people exaggerate about their dogs...and are just as bad about exaggerating about how much they make off of them. Most who are honest will tell you they are lucky to break even each year and that's the truth. I know lots of "pro handlers" and while they get paid to do what they do...it isn't as much as people think and most do it because they love to hunt a good dog and compete all over the country....but the expenses at the end of the year are usually more than any profit that was made.
If your in this sport to make money...you are probably headed for disappointment...

There is a guy around me that gets paid to hunt for a living. The last time I talked to him he was driving a new truck. We talked for a bit about his job. Here is what he gets paid-

1. New truck every three years
2. 35k per year
3. He must hunt 5 nights a week for 7 hours a night pushing at least 2 dogs.
4. Health insurance and 401k- (he pays for 50% of his health insurance)
5. 10 days vacation a year and 3 sick days. ( these must be scheduled around big hunts or scheduled hunts.
6. If the weather is bad or snowy in the north. He tends to travel south to hunt and train dogs.

To me this sounds like a lot of work and a lot of travel.

Out of Pepsi......

Those three cases that Butch traded a started pup to Shabel for; are looooong gone. Butterbean is back on twinkies and recycled rain water.

I know of 1 man that was under contract for 3 years at 120,000 a year and most of the expenses were paid for. And he had a problem showing up to the big hunts. And wonders why his contract was dropped.
