Dogs climbing tree??

So my older male dog has recently developed a problem where he likes to climb trees, on three different occasions in the past two months I have had to go and get him out of side ways or blown down trees, he gets up there and gets stuck and just waits on me to climb up and get him. Does anyone know any good way to stop this bad habit??

Is it a English dog?...

Hang a coon in a tree he can climb, anytime he starts to climb hit him with the ecollar, repeat until habit is broken.
Just an idea

don't think you will ever break that habit id say you start shocking him you probly just ruin him i never did belive in shocking on a tree but that's just me everybody has thier own way

He's already ruined... if you didn't use an e collar you could use a rope, or a lead. The point is you need to make the dog think he cannot climb trees again. I don't think it would be that difficult that considering its bred
into him to bark not climb.

Not saying it cant be done, but I have never been able to break one and I have tried. I believe he will do it till he dies.

Tree Climbing

You will never break this habit... Buy a pair of Dog Boots like lots of bird dog hunters use and your dogs climbing ability goes to almost none...

My female started doing the same thing a few years ago. She fell one night about 35-40 feet or so and luckily it didn't kill her but she hasn't climbed since. I figured she started doing it cause she's dead silent and was just running to catch and following them up the tree. Not sure if that may be what your dog is doing but it's jmo

ive never seen 1 broke that climbs or jacking the tree you might slow it down but i doubt you will ever complety get it stoped

Thanks for the ideas, I might try the dog boots, nothing else ive tried has really seemed to work and that's a new idea so maybe it'll help.

I wonder if trimming his toe nails down short and flat would help.

not sure if he is still around or not, but a few years ago there was a dog in our area who was the opposite of a tree climber .......a tree digger :/

he would dig a hole to china if left treed long enough and was always getting left in the woods when he treed alone because he didn't even bark. just dug and dug lol.

I think the kid finaly got around to getting a tracking collar for him. I always felt bad when he hunted with us and offered to let him just keep one of mine and come use the receiver if and when he needed it. sad thing was he wasn't a bad track dog and would stay "treed" errrrr "dug in" :/ till morning if ya didn't find him.

I've got an 11 month old that will climb. He once got high as 18-20 feet. Turned around and slipped in the fork of the tree and hung by his front legs and some how curled up and got back up. If he'd a fell it would've broke his back. Scared me. Nothin I could so but try to catch him if he fell. Lol

My dad had a redbone male maybe 10 years ago. He was a tree climbing artist. He'd always find his way to climb up. One night he climbed up and slipped out, ended up falling through my dads arms and hitting the ground. broke his back leg i think.


This year at the 2014 PA State Hunt, my nite champion english male climbed up 40ft on a big leaner leaning across a gully on the very first drop, and very first tree!!! Probably looked like 100ft down for him leaning across that steep hillside. He wouldnt turn himself around and come back down, so my dad had to go up and get him. At about halfway scooting his way up to him, it just starts down pouring heavy. He finally got up to him, turned him around and started back down. Scooting down backwards, and hanging onto Buck on a short leash walking him down, Buck slips and bails over edge of the tree. Now here's my 51 year old dad hanging onto a struggling 70lb hound, in down pouring rain. THANK GOD for the Dc40 collar being infront of his collar, because the black battery reciever on the DC40 was catching the collar from slipping over buck's neck. After about three tries of trying to pull this 70lb hound up, Buck chokes out and goes limp. My dad finally gets Buck up and over back up on the tree and he finally comes to. With ahold of Buck's "wrists" now, my dad slowly brings him the rest of the way down. Buck relaxes for a minute, and goes right back to treeing. Its too bad we couldnt see any eyes at the end of that thick maple tree. Woulda been a heck of a split tree to start out the PA State Hunt. Buck ended up winning his cast that night with 325+ and placing 3rd out of the 16 Nite Champs

the only thing i have ever seen slow a dog up from climbing is to keep trimming their nails down a lil at a time till they don't have much toe nail at all.
a climber is bad news. most of them will eventually meet their death or be crippled up bad.

4 1/2 yrs ago I had one fall 50' or so and hit a rock. Didn't break a bone in him but busted his diaphram and sack around his heart so I was told by the vet and we put him down. His toe nails were so short they didn't hit the clay when they made the foot print. I wonder if removing dew claws will help stop or slow down the climbing. I have another now that will get up in one but me and Tri Tronics have put a big slow down on it.

cut the nails short!! cut them, then a week later, cut em again, then so on and so forth. get em short, it will help

My first hound was a tree climbing redbone. He got better and better at it. After a couple of years, he could shinny up a straight tree like a monkey. He started out small, on apple trees and other easy to climb small trees with lots of branches. Used his mouth to pull himself up. Never hurt himself jumping out--he was real careful to look around, and usually jumped down, bouncing off things that would slow him and break his fall. Always jumped into water if he had that option, sometimes onto me--usually knocking me down. He would jump uphhill if he could. Got so he would climb trees trailing, not just treeing.
The worst thing is the climbers will teach others to do it too if you let them hunt with other hounds. I've seen an entire cast climb a tiny tree near a stone wall. They had the coon, but went quiet while climbing.
Whatever you do, don't encourage him by marveling at what he is doing. Thats the mistake I made. Let him know right away that you do not want him climbing trees!
