running deer

Last night my pup ran his first deer. As there anything I should do if he keeps doing it? He has a lot of potential of becoming a good dog, hate to get rid of him

OL TIMERS USED TO SAY IF THEY DON'T RUN A FEW WHEN THEY START OUT THEY WAN'T BE ANY GOOD ANYWAY.I WON'T WERRY ABOUT IT,IF HE KEEPS IT UP CORRECT HIM.I HAVE A GOOD YOUNG DOG I REALLY LIKE SHE HAS RAN 2-3 FAST TRACKS MABY DEER BUT I DON'T CONSIDER HER TRASHY,SHE IS 2 YRS. OLD NOW WE ARE COVERED UP WITH DEER AROUND HERE IF SHE WAS A TRASH RUNNER SHE WOULD RUN THEM ANY NT. JUST KEEP EM IN THE WOODS,GIVE EM A FEW COON.JMO

on fire/tree dogs

there all gonna run some off game sometime when there starting out. some will say there dog has never ran any junk but really they just never caught them or dont wanna admit it. I wouldn't worry to much about it just yet. atleast its running something. if it does it again and you know for sure it is take it deer hunting with the shock collar and do some controled training.

Well he ran another one all night tonight as soon as we cut him loose.

Put him up for a week with the shock collar on him. Let him wear it for a week and then take him hunting. That way when you shock him and get him broke then he won't know where the shock came from and you won't have to continually run the shock collar on him. If you train a dog correctly with a shock collar then you never really have to put it back on the dog again.

Hey Dusty, take him over to the Reservoir and walk him over a deer track with his lead on, and as soon as he shows any interest in it, or even wags his tail, shock the stuffing out of him, and tell him no! Do it where no one will see you,or they might call a ranger on you. That place is full of coons too. Do the same thing later with a hot coon track, and praise him like he's the greatest dog around! It might take a few times on that deer thing, but he will get the message soon enough! Some dogs learn quick, and some are a little more stubborn.

no because he likes to leave trees, hes hard headed, needs a lot of work. I know hes only 14 months but he don't have papers or anything and I live at home still and only aloud to have one dog. if I could have more than one id defiantly keep him. so its not just cause he ran 2 deer.
P.S when he came back last night he hunkerd down and know he messed up but still ran the deer the whole time

He probably hunkered down, because you were upset and he knew it, but didn't know why. Hunkering down is a sign of fear. When dogs are scared they don't learn.

You want a dog with hunt. I'm starting a pup right now that will run just about anything in the woods. This is much more desirable then a dog that stands at your feet, doesn't do anything.

You can usually bring the tree out over time.

Breaking a dog off of deer is easy. You drive to field that usually has deer. Walk him over to where they were. As soon as he starts to smell them and go in there direction. Blast him.

Lay him up for a day or two and go back again to the field. After 2 or 3 nights of this, he will come back to your feet, the minute he smells the deer.

Your dog has hundreds of years of hunting breeding bred into him. Just because he isn't out of a fancy stud, doesn't mean he won't.

More dogs don't finish out to be coon dogs because of poor training and lack of hunting, then poor breeding.

Thanks for the advise. I mean yes he has potential but there's more flaws than anything. If he just ran 2 deer theres no way in the world I'd get rid of him. He is a little gun shy, barks in the box, leaves trees and a whole lot more. Ive taking a lot of time with this dog. And just my opinion thats a little to much more work without him having papers

Dusty, just save your money and buy you a good older dog! They will teach you more about coon hunting than anyone on this forum could ever teach you! I know where there are a couple nice hounds that aren't that expensive. Trust me, the dog you are hunting is what makes coon hunting fun, or makes it stink!

Hey Dusty, Doug and Tyson really enjoy hunting with you. Doug told me Duke is a nice young dog!! I would like to get out with him some time. You will have to get Bruce and come for a hunt. We always have fun when Bruce is along. Good luck with Duke!!

Yea if i have duke for a little longer I'd like to do that. But I'm only aloud to have one dog at home and I told Doug I think I already got my pup picked out lol

Tom we'll definately have to get out soon. I've been callin Cannon, "fat boy", kinda like his owner. But, he's been lookin pretty good lately.

thanks everyone. the honest main reason im geeting rid of him is because I want to start going to hunts and he aint got papers. if I could have more than one dog theres no way he would be gone.

Dusty I ve talked to you a couple times on the phone and I'm telln you now and will do anything I can to help somone out to put them in the right direction but one person said the smartest thing I've ever heard somone say on here in long time and yes I no bruce personally but save your money and get you a good broke dog you can find a decent older dog pretty resonable a lot of times and that one dog will teach you more than any person are any thing that ever will it will make you the houndsman you will become ect. And I have started trained and handled 100s of dogs in my life and hope the man upstairs makes my health good enough to do another 100 but bruce is 100% right save you up 800 to 1000 buxs and try to find something and don't by the first dog you come across I hope you listen and wish you the best in the future
