Yes ear tags.

Posted by yrphunter on 04-20-2013 01:34 AM:

I got a box of the purple python cattle ear tags and cut them into 3 strips and zip tie them to the collars. Last year was my first time using them. They last a few months, didn't seem to effect the fleas but didn't have as many flies or any ticks.

Cattle fly tags

You can tie them to your boot laces to keep the chiggers ( red bugs) off of you also. But when there fresh the smell will run you out of your truck cab.

Posted by yrphunter on 04-20-2013 02:17 AM:

That's interesting haven't heard that. I haven't noticed much smell but haven't been that close to them or in a closed in area either.

Iused them on my dog collars, but give lyme shots too. LI use the whole tag and change them at least every 3 mo. There is a thread on here somewhere I'll try to find it. I had a couple of mules that had lots of ticks under their jaw and I put one on their halters and in a couple of days ticks had all died and fell off.

PESTS

If you need something Gentle for pups or dogs for mosquitoes, fleas & knats, this might even help with ticks. Use a Pint or Quart Spray Bottle & fill almost full of water. Add 2 or 3 Caps Full of "Skin So Soft Orginal Scent Bath OIL". I spray inside the Dog House, on Kate & her pups every morning & evening for Knats & mosquitoes, etc. Smells Good Too.

homemade "advantix"

Permethrin 10 livestock spray, tractor supply and others carry it. Diluted in sprayer will provide all you need for a long long time. good to spray chaps before hunting as well. Very cost effective. Primary ingredient in commercial treatments, check the ingredients ..

The frontline for fleas and ticks works for my dogs. For myself. Drink you a shot of apple cyder vinegar EVERY night till first frost. It'll keep em off pretty much. No chiggers much either. I hear garlic pills work to. We are eat up with ticks already this yr. Believe it or not. I think ivomec helps keep off the dogs to.

I use Frontline on dogs religiously, also PreventTic collar, most vets have them. about $12-15 each, I guarantee you will not have any ticks. There are too many tick bourne diseases out there to take a chance. You can never cure a dog of a tick bourne ailment. Tom

I use Skin so soft and add a little Citronella oil to it, not the kind you burn in lamps, but the kind you can buy in health stores. I use it for sketters and ticks. Spray it on myself instead of the mosquito spray. I do spray my bibs with deet also. Don't like the stuff in cans on my skin, too strong.

Yep these work great and are specific for ticks/mites. The active ingredient is Amitraz.

Posted by RedBNJ on 04-20-2013 10:39 PM:

Advantix II works very well. It is pricey but its the best outside of an Amitraz collar, which I won't use.

Vectra 3D is very similar to Advantix but Advantix is easier to find.

Advantix also works on fleas, flies, mosquitos, etc.

All I can find is the orange tags. Does any body know where you can by the purple tags? Does the orange tags work?

Posted by yrphunter on 04-21-2013 07:42 PM:

Tractor supply company carries the purple tags. They're called purple python.

Hilbily is right on the money. I use Permetherin 10 on both my chaps, clothes (sprayed on and allowed to dry) and my dogs (undiluted around 3ml...I can get the exact dosage for you if you're interested). I used to use frontline (fipronil) monthly and it got to the point where it wouldn't touch the fleas that we had last year. It did a fair job on the ticks though. It seemed that last year we had a TON of ticks, more than usual.

I didn't have much trouble keeping them off the dogs but I would find a few here and there. The biggest problem I had was that i was finding several on me each night when I would return. I started spraying my chaps down once every month or so during the hot season and also my hunting clothes (sprayed on after washing and allowed to line dry) and I haven't found a tick on me since. I'm in the woods on average for 6 hours 4 nights per week even during the heat of summer.

I calculated the approximate dosage in Bayer advantage and back calculated to figure the dosage of Permetherin 10 to apply directly to my dogs. I started rubbing it undiluted on my dogs down their backline and it has eliminated all ticks on them. I haven't found one one any of the three I have since I started using it last spring. When combined with bayer tree and shrub (w/o fertilizer) it makes a very effective flea/tick prevention. You can pay a lot more similar but I promise you won't get better results. It's a little more troublesome to apply than the small vials of common flea/tick prevention but I have yet to find anything that was as effective. As a result, I have since completely stopped all other types of flea/tick preventative.

Recall that both permetherin and imidacloprid are the active ingredients in Bayer flea and tick products.

Right now, Certifect is the most vet recommended prevent for ticks, fleas and lice. If you are willing to spend 15 bucks per month.
