Read the rules and know them as well as you possibly can and don't tell anyone that it is your first hunt. Some people will try to take advantage of new people at the hunts so know the rules so you will know if they are trying to pull a fast one on you.

Go with a goal to have fun and you will. Study the rules and call your dog as honestly as you can. Remember that its just a game and dont expect the best dog to always win. If you have a question dont be afraid to ask the judge. You will run into a few guys who take it way to seriously but at the end of the night you can only control how you act. HAVE FUN.

Understand that you will learn a lot about your dog and yourself in the hunt!

I would suggest you get a couple of good friends who know the rules and are honest and have a "Mock" hunt and do this a few nights. It will give you a chance to ask questions and do a trial run without the pressure of a 1st hunt. You will also be able to ask questions to some people you can trust!

Pretty much like these guys said know the rules and go to have fun and if they start tryen to take advantage of you put them in thier place Alittle curse words never hurt enyone espacialy when your gonna always have that one guy in a few cast that will try to intimidate people to get his win it happens and take a stop watch or enything to keep time when you strike your dog time it when you tree your dog time it so you can back your **** up if **** gets deep I was raised around comp hunts growing up just now got me a dog that I feel will make the cut in comp hunts gonna get back in them withen a few months still learning these rules also.

People accuse me of being color blind. The truth is I will hunt red ones, blue ones, black and white ones, yellow ones, black and tan ones, or even brindle ones; Just as long as they are English!

Call your dog for what he does, not what you want him to do.

if you and a guy call the same dog split the strike points and go on you can do that but if you know 110% it was your dog call him out on it and if you got a dog that you know forsure is gonna back the first do treeing when o Joe over there trees his dog tree yours in also haha jk that would be cheating.

I know a master of hounds and he said you could as long as two guys strike the same dog at the same time.

just call YOUR dog for what it is doing,,you know your dog ,dont let anyone tell you what YOUR dog is doing, have fun,if you get with a bad person in your cast ,dont let it get to you, just call YOUR dog and go home feeling good about yourself.let us know how it goes.

HUNT

SOME PEOPLE WILL TRY TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF NEW PEOPLE AND OLD PEOPLE AT THE HUNTS SO KNOW THE RULES SO YOU WILL KNOW WHEN THEIR TRYING TO CHEAT YOU OR YOUR DOG.

THAT PRETTY WELL SUMS IT UP,

ITS AMUSEMENT, FUN. JUST SMILE AND SAY; I NEVER DID MIND ABOUT THE LITTLE THINGS.

DON'T TAKE IT TO SERIOUS, OR IT WON'T BE AMUSING
YOU MIGHT NOT LAST TO LONG AT IT, UNDER THEM RULES.

Posted by texasdan26 on 10-31-2012 11:55 AM:

thanks

That pretty well sums it up I think...great post...thank you..

My dad always told me the only reason people cuss is because they aren't intelligent enough to think of something else to say. I think you can prove your point without escalating to that level while still maintaining your integrity.

My best advice as many others have said is to know the rules backwards and forwards. Don't stop at just reading the rules but know how to interpret them and apply them to each situation (order a copy of the Advisor from UKC and study it!). Be able to back up your argument (if it arises) with cold hard facts backed by UKC's interpretation.

Above all, just have fun and maintain your integrity. Remember that hound come and go but the people you come into contact with and hunt with will likely be around much longer than the dogs.

Comp hunts get a bad rap but I have met many very nice people and have hunted with several outstanding hounds in the process. It's definitely a learning process and the only way you'll ever learn this game is by doing it.

Call him like you hear him. Thats what my cousin has always told me. ive been doin it for about a year now, We did a few mock hunts before I started comp huntin and it seemed to help. Another thing that I think is a good idea is to go and just spectate on a few hunts before as well. Good luck and GO BLUE!
