Hounds with a "curled tail"
Have any of you had experience with a hound with a "curly tail" that they carry up over the back? I just got this pup, who at 7 months is doing a fantastic job - good looking dog, but has a long tail he carries high and curls over his back. I hate the look. May look into having it cut off - and call him stubby! This pup is out of Rocky bloodlines - and shows it with looks and ability - other than the tail, unless that is something that shows up once in a while in that blood?
What would you do, if anything?

Hey Chris, have you ever drew Larry Wilcox?
I've got a 5 mo old female out of Bellar's Psycho with a curled over tail. I personally don't mind the look, reminds me of a dog my dad used to own that was a pretty good dog so maybe that's why I don't mind it...
I've heard Psycho dogs were known to have curled tails, but this is my first experience with that line.

high carried tails show confidence and courage. all mine can carry them that way, but few do. It shows a spirited dog, and thats the kind i want. No tail tuckers for me..JMO. As far blood, about every fox dog i ever owned carried theirs that way, and they were winners.

You have probably hit it on the head with confidence and spirit. This seems to be one smart pup with alot of drive.
Treberta - ya, I hunt with Larry once in a while - lives about 3 miles from me. Might even call him a good friend. lol

I have one that curls to the point of touching his back. I like him though he is starting to really turn on.

We have a 3 yr old GR NT walker male that has a long curly tail. I like it. He is a coon dog and hes not mean in any way. Only had a couple dogs with the curly tail but i dont mind them.

I had a really good English female I called Curly that had a curled tail. I didn't like the curl, but she treed me a lot of coon. A dog's tail doesn't have anything to do with it's ability to tree coon. And, excessively bold dogs can be aggresive. The true spirit of a dog is between his (or her"s) ears.

lol... I've got some curly tailed dogs, and they are definitely not cocky or trouble. I see what you're saying, but most of the time its just a trait that dog has inherited, not his attitude. JMO

I have had dogs that carry their tail high, and then I have had one hound that had a 'curled tail', in that it was curled so tight the last 3 inches laid on his back...I always called those teacup tails, curled like the handle on a tea cup....
it's the cur comming out in em from somwhere in the wood pile. That's not always a bad deal either.

I like it! Makes them different. When I breed her and she has a litter of pups I'm keeping the one with the most curly tail.
And I can always tell when she's not feeling like herself, because the tail comes uncurled and looks normal.

they do not meet the breed standards. i do not recall any breed stating a curly tail is ok.

I have heard some say the curl is the hook that keeps them treed.
The comment about the Cur coming out in them may be correct.
It is not a trait I would keep but doesn't affect their ability in the woods.
