Chilled Semen

Wondering why more breeders are not making fresh chilled semen more avaliable?
With the price of fuel and all other related cost, I feel it is the way to go.
It is a rather simple process to get the semen ready for shipement. The stud dog is collected, a semen buffer extender is added and shipped overnight.
We now have extenders that will keep the semen good for 5 to 6 days.
I suggest the semen be shipped overnight and the female bread the next day with half the semen. Then 2 days later the other half can be used.
Progesterone testing is a must when useing chilled or frozen semen.
I have taught some stud dog owners how to collect and ship the chilled semen themselfs.

I tried it two times and will never do it again. I did not get a pup after spending all the money for the tests.

Leroy,

I've been shipping fresh chilled semen for three or four years now, and you are right...it makes sense.

But here is the big stopper....the vet on the receiving end. The buck stops right there.

I've had several guys that were going to ship chilled semen to their female, but either could not find a vet locally that could or would do the progesterone testing, OR, they are charging hundreds of dollars (most times more than the cost of the stud fee plus overnight shipping)

I've seen and heard some pretty outrageous vet expenses for progesterone testing. A guy in Mississippi wanted semen shipped. His local vet was going to charge him $500.00 for office calls, multiple progesterone test, recieving the semen, and insemination. It would have been much less expensive for him to load up and drive to Indiana.

So yes, from the aspect of collection, preparation, and shipping the semen...we have perfected the shipping of chilled semen. In the horse world, a vet will come to the farm, ultrasound the mare and can actually see a developing follicle, and tell you what day to breed the mare. They will do this for about $75.00 locally. They will then come BACK to the farm, inseminate the mare for you for another $100.00...making it very feasible. However, if you can't find a vet locally that is able and willing to do the progesterone testing for a reasonable fee....then we are beating our heads against the wall.

Folks Leroy has helped me with some canine reproduction. He knows what he his talking about. I have never AI'd anything. After several phone calls, he had me positive I could handle the females end of the breeding myself. I elected to not use a vet. I paid for the male across the county to get collected, paid for the shipping of the semen, and did it myself for under $250. My female is about 6 weeks into her pregnancy, and I'm for sure she took. Leroy gave me very detailed instructions, and it went exactly as he described. I would recommend dealing with Leroy to anyone that is open minded enough to do it themselves.

Please feel free to contact me for more details.

Regards,
Josh

Frozen seman

How long does it last after having it frozen thanks Jason

If you have Leroy collect a stud, it will be there for 100 years. He said they have used 35 year old semen with great results.

How about A seminar at Autumn Oaks.

Collecting And shipping chilled semen? I know it will be PG 13 but it would help a lot of us learn the ropes! Some one also needs to start a vet registry(list) of vets and Breeding services that are CERTIFIED to do progestorone testing and breed with chilled and frozen semen! This would be a great help to us all.

HEY. THAT'S A GOOD IDEA.

AND IT WOULD BE NICE IF THEY COULD MAYBE EVEN COLLECT AND FREEZE ON THE GROUNDS FOR YOU WHILE YOU WERE THERE.

AT BIG HUNTS LIKE THIS THERE ARE STUD DOGS THAT WOULDNT NORMALLY BE THERE.

I KNOW IF THEY WERE COLLECTING AND FREEZING WE'D SURE HAVE SID AND POSSIBLY SID JR DONE!

we have taken three females to leroy to bred and have had good results. the first one had nine pups and raised seven. we have two females bred ai now and are due may 11th and showing signs ogf having pups.

i think this is a good idea of having a class on collecting and ai breeding a female along with all the things that go along with this.

leroy is a great guy and has been doing this for many years if you have any questions or need help give him a call.

Do they surgically implant chilled semen? I know they implant frozen semen, but I didn't think they needed to implant chilled.

They don't "NEED" to surgically implant frozen or chilled, however, it increases the chances of the female taking. When it comes to chilled, vaginal is all that is really needed. It works just fine. Leroy is a great choice if they could get a seminar set up. He is a fine gentleman.

Thank you again Leroy.

Josh

Leroy, once i receive the chilled semen. And, have given half of it to my female. How do keep the other half chilled and still good?

Posted by lfrisbie on 04-26-2009 03:59 PM:

Galaxy Genetics

Years ago I used the frozen seamen from Northern Blue Jet 5 a couple times with good success. The vet plays a very important roll in the success of using either the frozen or the chilled seaman. I did all the required tests to get the peak ovulation period though.

HOW WELL DOES FREEZING CHILLED SEMEN ONCE IT'S BEEN SHIPPED OVERNIGHT WORK?

I KNOW YOU CAN COLLECT IT AND IMMEDIATELY FREEZE IT, OR IS THAT USUALLY HOW IT'S DONE.

COLLECT, PUT IN THE EXTENDER GOODIES, SHIP IT, THEN HAVE IT FROZEN AT THE STORAGE FACILITY?
