Super Ear's----Or----Loud Mouthed Dog's

Time has a way of making a memory better than the reality, but I think the loudest dog I heard was a single registered B&T that I first started hunting. I put him in a few hunts and when he opened, other guys would just look at each other. He was a wide hunting dog and I don't know how many times I started walking to him, and crossed the next road over. I learned that unless he was hurting my ears, it was better to drive around. One night I lost him for awhile, and then heard him treed. He was 2.5 miles away. No bull, lol.

One guy can hear his dog 3/4 of a mile away, while sitting In his living room.

another guy can hear his dog 1.5 away.


DOES THESE GUY'S HAVE SUPER EAR'S, OR THEIR DOG HAVE SUPER LOUD MOUTHS????

Pitch has more to do with "how far" you can hear a dog than does volume....

You ever hear a storm siren or fire whistle that is "low pitched"?

Give me that screaming squall mouth dog over that low, gruff bawl any day......

The reality is that the higher the pitch, the better your going to be able to hear a sound of the same volume over distance.

Joe is correct . High pitched barks carry a whole lot further than low sounding barks. Also, chops carry much further than bawls do. Most yard dog's i can hear further than my old female.

Also, i believe a man can hear his own dog a little further than others can. He has learned over the years how to tune out all other tones and really zone in to that one certain pitch or tone. That's happened to me a bunch. Also, when your hunting in steep hills or mountains it can really, really, affect how far you can hear a dog. You can be standing on a mountain listening to your dog treed on the next mountain over. Hear him loud and clear like he was a couple hundred yards away. Start straight to the dog down in the hollow and by the time you get all the way down you can't hear anything. Start back up the mountain, set your compass and walk straight. In a few minutes the dog will start coming back into hearing again. The dog never shut up. Never. It's the mountains.

What you are probably experiencing is the parabolic effect of hills and valleys. Sound waves can be focused by the curve of a hill and you can hear a couple of miles away if the air is still. During the Civil War they could sometimes hear the talk of the other side if everyone hushed down. I had an experience of hearing some family talking outside of the house once and I was a half mile out deer hunting in the woods. They sounded like they were close by but they were out in the driveway talking by their cars in their normal voices. If you go to a science museum they might have a pair of sound dishes mounted up opn opposite sides of a large noisy room. Two people can whisper to each other from the length of the room with them. Cool stuff.

I think I was quoted up above. Believe it or not, doesn't really matter to me.

I can tell you I have a slight hearing loss in my left ear and my right ear is normal and been that way since I was a teenager. It was gently rolling country, mostly open fields.

By comparison, I was hunting a female last night that has a soft mouth. She took a track deep and treed. I drove around and got within a half mile of her and could barely hear her.

the pitch has it

My B&T female is really not that loud when you get close to her, however, I can comfortably tree her at 1 1/2 to 2 miles on rolling ground. So yes, I do love it when the dogs get deep.

My dad had a female onece that was low-toned. You couldn't hardly tell the difference whether she was 100 yards or a mile. Up bear hunting , we could hear her as far as any dog we had up there. just the " right " tone I guess.

this dog here, has a SUPER DEEP bawl mouth and i cant remember how many times i've heard him treeing, i'm at home and the guy that hunts him, hunts about 1-2 miles from my house, have never heard another dog like him, i also know its him cuz they hunt two dogs, almost every time and if i dont hear the other dog, a blue dog, i drive over there and see who it is....

Not sure if this helps at all.... LOL... cause I have NO IDEA what it even means.
Our blue tick has a BIG bawl mouth. The neighbors call him the FogHorn. It travels thru the woods to our friends farm. I don't know how far away that is but their land is between 250-300 acres and they are on the other side of it.... You can easily hear him from there. My roosters crowing does not travel that distance. Our other high pitched barking dogs and the chop mouth hounds we've had in the past could not be heard from there.
Whatever the noise of a foghorn is... whether high or low pitched CARRYS a distance....

I still think that different people can hear different tones better than others. Some people can hear the high pitched dogs, others can hear the deeper ones.

But the guys with the best ears are the ones that have the 8 minutes running

The noise produced by a foghorn is very deep, because deep sounds are audible to human ears farther than higher pitched sounds.

Now Joe I don't know about your sayings.

My husband and I had a GREAT laugh about this at bedtime... I was telling him about the thread...and my post... and I said "I am SUCH a NERD!"... and he said "yup"... and I saw him blush the way he did when we were kids...LOL... and I suddenly hit me... i was ALWAYS a NERD and I never realized it till now! I love to learn...always did... Most of my friends were even smarter than me...LOL... we were NERDS! I guess it took brain injury and learning disablities I now have to see this! Akkkk! Anyway... we laughed till we cried... He admited I had "scared him by being so smart" LOL....
Sad thing is I am CLUELESS about Physics...and he is SO much smarter than me at that kinda stuff and HE HAS NO CLUE how smart he is LOL....

PS... I grew up on the ocean a good deal of the time and the ONLY thing I love to hear MORE than a foghorn is my bluetick Wyatt... the day he is silenced for ever will be a dark day for me BUT... I will still hear him in my memories... once in a lifetime pet for sure! I bet his old hunting partner still hears him......

There are two factors that control hearing. Pitch or frequency, and volume or intensity.

We measure pitch in Hertz, or "vibrations per second". The higher the pitch, the faster the vibration. Remember that, we'll come back to that....

The intensity we measure in Decibels. It is truly a measure of how much we alter the air by sound. The more energy that is exerted into the air, the more decibels, or "louder" the sound will be.

Now....based upon that, we know that sound waves travel in the same manner as the waves on a pool, when a pebble is dropped onto the surface, in a concentric pattern. As the wave travels, the waves lose energy or in the case of sound, volume.

You will also notice that as the distance increases, and the wave loses energy, the frequency changes as well....the resistance of the water in the pool, decreases the frequency of the waves.

Fog horns operate at a higher Decibel range, and that is why they are easily heard for longer distances.

All things being equal, high pitched sounds of the same intesity (volume, or decibels) travel further and are perceptible by the human ear easier......

It may be easier to have a low pitched hound mouth with more decibels, that I don't know....

I also know that the older we get, the less sensitive the human ear is to low frequencies (pitch)...so maybe since I'm an old fart....that's why it's easier for me to hear a higher pitched dog.

i know i have a couple dogs now that have brought me on some hikes bc i could hear them real good and then have 2 cross a road or 2 before i get 2 them and then have 2 call someone 2 come pick me up and take me 2 the truck

Joe, the reason I wanted to know about the super ear's, or loud mouthed dog's, is because I don't hear as well as some of my hunting friends.

But Joe, I can't set In my living room, and hear a dog barking In my back yard. Unless I go to the back door.

I honestly believe that the ability to hear our dogs varies so much from person to person....

I also believe that we get "tuned" into a specific dog. I don't know how many times I have seen folks ask the judge if they can hear that dog "yonder"....and the answer be "no"....

Sure enough, we get closer and the guys dog is barking in the direction indicated....he could hear his dog when nobody else could, BECAUSE HE WAS LISTENING FOR IT....

I know I don't hear as well as I used to could!
