Independent or Pack dog Your

thoughts on this one..........one more before I go to bed

I've hunted with some folks that just flat hated a dog that gets of to him/her self 99% of the time. These fellows think that a dog that will not work with the group/cast/pack is in their humble opinion a FAULT in the dog?????

Now, what do you as hunters think???????

Do you want a dog that gets off to themselves, or do you want one that goes with the pack????

I figure if a dog gets off and has the coon, fine, and if they are running a coon, they better not stop and come check another dog to see what they got going, they better finish it, BUT if they don't have anything going and the other dogs do I want mine to get some of it also.

I guess I look at a dog that is always with the other dogs and NEVER gets by themselves might be classified as a ME-TO dog??

My personal preferance is a dog off to themselves, but hey thats what I like !!!!!!

I'll take the independent dog any day. It is such an advantage. You can have a 3rd or 4th strike dog and still be in the game if the other three are running together swapping tree points. Only thing that can be a headache is when they all split in different directions getting out of hearing or on posted land. Man you must be bored!! I am!!

I don't want my dog to quit his track or leave his tree to go to another dog or dogs, but neither do I want one that is always trying to slip off by himself.

If a hound I turned my dog loose with strikes within a reasonable distance of mine, and mine doesn't have anything going on, I want mine getting in the race.

Dogs are by nature pack animals, and I am way more of a pleasure hunter than anything else. I don't want to always be having to go to my dog by myself on a pleasure hunt, but I can't stan one of those "me-too" suckers either.

As in most other traits, balance is the name of the game for me.

I have had to rethink some training strategies since I've been hunting Albert dogs. They are so independent by nature you can hunt them too much by themselves. I almost ruined a good one that way. She got where she wouldn't work with other dogs at all, just wanted to be by herself. I finally brought her out of it, but it took a while.

I have guided casts for the National Championship in another registry and you couldn't give me some of those go yonder "independant" dogs that have to race horse a mile before they even look for a coon and are broke from covering another dog. I wouldn't have some of the "me too" dogs I have hunted with either. I like a dog that will do his own thing but has the sense to join the pack if that is the only thing going. To me, a good coondog should be able to do it by themselves or with a pack, depending on the conditions.

a pack hound. For big game I want an independent hound. The last thing I need is a bunch of blubbering idiots stomping out a track if none of them are capapble to move that track out of the area.
if one hound looses it I want to know one of the others will pick it up and take it.

i like an independent dog that doesnt worry about what the other dogs are doing.one that will run and tree with the other hounds if they hit the same track,but hunts on its own and goes deaf once it is seperated from the others.

Give me a dog that is looking for a coon when turned loose....I dont care if he is labeled "independent" or "me too"

As long as they are ALWAYS looking for a coon and dont care what the others are doing.

A hound that will go with and without the pack. Takes all the pressure you can give it and isn't afraid to back another dog if it is in the right.

I voted for none of the above.
I want a hound that trees the first coon up. I want to turn that same hound back to hounds running and tree the next coon up. Even if the running hounds don't. Tree every kitten AND the sow. I want them treeing the first coon every time. If you are breeding them right, they should be fast enough to get first tree in the pack and confident enough to fall out and tree while everything else goes breezing through the country. I want my hound focused on getting treed ALL the time. Not worrying about getting away from the pack or getting back to the pack. If they are always together, I want a hound that can take first tree. If they want to foot race, I want mine treeing every coon between where I let them go from to where I am going. I just like a plain old coondog.

I AGREE WITH JOSH I WANT A HOUND THAT HAS ENOUGH SENSE TO KNOW IF HE ISNT TRAILING HIS OWN TRACK TO CHECK ANOTHER DOG THAT HAS OPENED. BUT MY DOG IS VERY INDEPENTENT ALMOST TO A FAULT? HE DOESNT LEAVE THE COUNTRY TO STRIKE. ITS HARD TO BEAT HIM ON STRIKING UNLESS A DOG IS LOOSE MOUTH. I DONT LIKE A BABBLING DOG.

I want a pack dog during the week,hunts 20 min. each turn out ,trees real quick,has the coon, one that I can hunt with my buddy`s dogs and they all tree together and always get along.I want a independent track driving ,coon treeing,no come back,hunt winning,hound on the weekend . I want it in the same dog. This is what most people want,you cann`t have it !

I like a "pack dog" that will also get by its self. A dog that does what it is going to do whether the other dogs are with it or not. However, if it isn't doing anything and the others are, I want mine to get in on it. I don't mind a pack minded dog as long as they have the sense to do what is right when the others are acting stupid.

It says more to me when a dog can get 1st and 1st consistently in the company of the other dogs than one that can get 1st tree by himself. It may be harder to win that way, but it displays more ability.

Independence vs. Indifference

A long time ago, this discussion was brought up and debated back and forth between a buddy of mine and I. I coined the phrase indifferent for what he wanted in a coonhound.

Independent hound(according to Tank) is a dog that will go on and do what is right regardless of what the other dogs are doing. If he strikes a track WITH the other dogs and te other dogs tree accurately, then the independent dog will be right there with them. IF they are wrong, the independent dog will be right.

Indifferent hounds(according to Tank) are either trained or bred to go away from other dogs and totally ignore what the other doggies are doing. This is becoming more and more common in competition hunts.

...of course the open woods and fields of Indiana are more forgiving than the hills of North Carolina...

You guys ALWAYS have another coon to get on. We had 1 coon that we passed around to different guys each weekend to take turns running.

If its better to HAVE to rely on split trees or to have a dog that gets a piece of all of the action and has the ABILITY to get split treed at some point.

I'm getting to the point where I would like one that is independant enough to split tree, and will do so at least once in two hours...but at the same time will get a piece of every coon scored if possible.
