Dog Food Question?!?!?!

we've been having a problem lately with dog food...been getting food at the local co-ops and the food SUCKS....dogs are well wormed and took care of and feeding double the amount and the dogs hips are still getting thin and the hip bones and ribs showing through....

also, the feed is HIGH PRICED...dang, i fed Ol' Roy in the red bag and had better results out of my dogs...and its CHEAPER...what's the deal, why are the co-op feeds goin downhill? we are having a hard time finding feed that is affordable and good for the dogs...i give $15 for a 50 pound bag of feed and it SUCKS...heck that Purina One is only like $18....i used to get a NICE bag of food for $9 for 50 pound and it would fatten dogs too much if overfed...

just wondering if anyone else has noticed co-op feeds goin down...and what's a good affordable food? and please don't say $18 a bag...dang i used to get 50 pound for $9, i don't need top of the line, just healthy for the dogs...its gettin so i cant even afford dog food, if i feed double the feed each day and the dogs continue to get thin at the food prices, it sucks...

i just want to know why co-op feeds are goin to nothin all of a sudden....

Try one of the Black Gold's. I can get the black bag for 16.00, the blue for 17.00. The yellow, silver and white bag cost around 13.00 to 15.00 I think. This feed really works and you don't have to feed alot of it. Go to www.blackgolddogfood.com to see the different percentages the dogs foods have. If your feed store doesn't sell it then talk to them about getting it. Good luck.

Around here the Purina One is $18 for a 20 lb bag and $25 for the 37.5 lb bag,or are you including the pro club rebate?

In my dogs short life he has eated, Pride, Hi-Standard, Pzazz, Diamond, and Enhance. He gets right about 3 cups a day from the heat of summer the the freeze of winter.

He has always been healthy as a horse, never been thin, and always had more energy than he knows what to do with. You can hunt him 5 nights a week or no nights a week and he looks about the same. I would say get the dog checked out first. I know there can be bad batches of feed out there, but generally, I don't think a dog is that hard to keep unless something is wrong with them.

Try purina hi-pro it's cheeper then purina one thats what i feed, and thats the best feed i found around here.

Hi-Standard Dog Food

I have tried almost every dog food out there, Hi-Standard is the best food for the money.

We were feeding

Diamond in the green bag, until the dogs started losing weight & both dogs I bred didn't take. Did some checking around with other folks using this food & found that they too, had the same problem...sooooooo...we changed to Prism 26/18 & the dogs are back up to weight again & not alot of poooo to clean up after them. Not sure of the heat & breeding aspect, both gyps won't be due back in until June. But so far it is working well & I get it deleiver for $17 a bag. Note: Bulldog owner, don't use this food, they get as fat as a hog & get hot spots from the high protein. Feed them something crappy & they are happy as pigs in slop! I'm feeding Xena Pedigree.

the problem is...yall are naming dog food that i have NEVER seen sold around here...Hi Standard, Diamond, Black Gold...i have yet to see a store around here carry it....u can get co-op feed...or u can go to walmart and get ol roy, purina, and all the stuff walmart carries...

i don't know what the deal is with my area, but i have NEVER seen any of them names sold around here....i am consistantly in three different counties all the time and buy from 2 county co-ops, 2 tracter and farm supplys, 4 farm and feed stores and plus wal-mart...

i used to feed maybe 3 cups of feed a day...now i cant even put weight on and i am feeding half to 3/4 of a gallon ice cream buckett a day EACH...i used to take the gallon ice cream bucket, fill it up and feed 5 dogs out of the one gallon bucket, now it won't even keep weight on one dog....

i know its not worms, i have used several different wormers including Safe-Guard...and i'm not the only one with the problems...the feed here SUCKS!!!!

forget that diamond crap, if you guys want to forget what they did selling bad feed that made dogs sick and killed them, go ahead, Im not.

purina dog chow is all the feed anyone needs.

high pro is a little cheaper.

you want cheap, don't complain.

You said you could get Purina at Walmart,so whats the problem finding a decent food?

Try Diamond Lamb and Rice or Chicken and Rice if that dont work try Maximum Nutrition Lamb and Rice. It could be a reaction to the corn. I have several pure breds that cant stomach chicken or corn. If there is a Sam's Club near You try Members Mark Exceed Lamb and Rice.

I also feed Diamond Lamb and Rice. That isn't the kind that killed dogs. That was Alfotoxin poisoning from the corn. The Lamb and Rice formula has NO CORN therefore NO AFLOTOXIN! I have bred a female while on the feed and she took; have raised four healthy pups on the Diamond Lamb and Rice Large Breed and have my 10 y/o male on it that still has lead in his pencil and seems to be real perky on the feed. Two months ago we decided to try a bag of HI-Pro. BAD IDEA! WE switched gradually as not to upset the dogs and each of the 8 dogs lost weight, had dull coats and their stools were plentiful and runny most of the time. We had heard good stuff about the Hi-Pro and it was a little cheaper but it definitly wasn't worth it. We switched back to Diamond and are still happy with it. As far as I heard, Diamond took care of the poisoning and reimbursed most people. I think I'll go beat the dead horse about dogfood for awhile. lol I've heard good stuff about Purina One and if you can get it for $18 I would jump on that deal!

We can get it for about $19 for a 40# bag at our Tractor Supply. If your local tractor supply dosn't carry it, talk to them about ordering a bag or two for you each month. AS it sounds right now, you will spend as much on 2 bags of Diamond every month as you will on several more bags of the cheapy stuff you are feeding right now. Good luck...

purina dog chow is $16.76 for a 50lb bag at wal mart. unfortuantely wal mart doesn't sell hi pro. don't know why. no one will tell me. but with tax hi pro is $18 for a 50lb bag at tractor supply. i use the pro club rebate checks and it is $11 for a 50lb bag. i prefer the hi pro. first ingrediant is meat. corn is way down on the list. in dog chow the first ingrediant is corn.
i used to feed diamond hi energy until they had the recall and we couldn't get it here for a while so we had to switch. when we switched we joined the pro club and now it's just cheaper to feed purina.

No offense to anyone here but Purina is crap. I feed my dog either Wellness Super5Mix or Nutro large breed. Sometimes i cant get the wellness so i mix the Nutro in with it so she doesnt get any digestive problems.

I used to feed Solid Gold Wolf King but its too expensive out here. Another good food is Canidae. Most pet stores sell the Nutro and Canidae. I know Walmart doesnt....Mills Fleet Farm sells Nutro.

Feed Purina One

I take what I feed my dogs very seriously. I used to like Diamond green bag but now it sucks since all that poison stuff happened. That can happen to any company, but when you open a bag it smells funny, the dogs breathe stinks, and they produce more crap with it than ever before. More waste from your dogs equates to ingredients that the dog cant metobolize...like fillers, bulks, etc.. I now feed Purina One Lamb and Rice Adult and really like it. I use less than Diamond so the higher price is a wash, the dogs keep weight on better, firm less frequent stools (easier kennel cleanup), and they have a ton of energy. Paying more per bag isnt always a bad thing, in the long run you may save money in portion reduction..and less cleanup effort is always a good thing. Try this also, take a few different types of feed and place a little bit in a glass..each type in it's own glass. Now pour the same amount of water into each glass and check on it 15 minutes later. Some feeds balloon up like crazy when wet..others dont nearly as much. This can cause dehydration in dogs during the cold months, and the more it swells the higher chance of bloat. To me the Purina One seems like a more digestable feed in my tests. Try Purina One Lamb and Rice for a few weeks, you might become a convert just like me.

We feed Diamond High Energy (maroon bag) and our hounds are healthy and have all the energy they need. The whole ordeal with Diamond dog feed killing dogs has been resolved. Diamond has all the right nutrition a working hound needs.

We did a comparison of all the major feeds looking at nutritional content, calories per pound, servings per pound, and more. Tops on that list were Black Gold and Diamond. We've had other problems with corn based feed (corn fungus was the problem with the old Diamond formula and could happen with any corn based feed), like allergies and indigestion, so we wanted to avoid corn. Black Gold was slightly more expensive than Diamond and our nearest dealer was many miles away. Diamond is available from a lot of dealers close to us, but we get it from Coastal Farm Supply because they move a large quantity of it every week. The smaller dealers in our area are still getting bags with the old formula markings on them from their jobber and we refuse to buy stale food, but Coastal has the new bags for $19 for 40#. Our 90#Uchtman male has been on Diamond Beef & Rice for most of a year now. He gets 3 cups a day unless it's under 30 degrees, in which case he gets 4 cups. You can judge for yourself what kind of shape he's in:

I have some neighbors that are involved in dog obedience and other dog training events ( good citizenship??) and they also feed Canidae. I looked into this stuff and it is a very good dogfood. BUT for the price I would have for it I might as well feed my dogs t-bone steaks. I think when I looked at it, it was like $38 for a 40lb bag.
From past conversation, I think you mentioned that your dogs aren't being hunted. If you can afford these foods, they would probably suit your dog just fine. But the majority of people feeding hounds are feeding multiple high energy working dogs so I think feeding some of these other feeds probably suit them just fine. I personally feed Pzazz it seems to be decent food but I'm not overly impressed with it and will continue to try other foods that are comparable in price and convenience.
