Thyroid treatment timing

Those of you that have treated a dog for low thyroid. How long after you start treatment will they start showing improvement? I am going to start treatment and was wondering how long to give it? Thanks.

Posted by Cleo on 03-14-2019 02:05 PM:

The treatment is not a quick fix, it is an ongoing thing that will POSSIBLY need to be adjusted until the correct dosage is found. I am sure your vet told you all of that, tho.
You should start seeing some changes within about 2 weeks. Keep up with your monthly blood tests and you will get that hound where he needs to be!

What line of hounds do you have?

I'd say 2-4 weeks! Make sure you're consistent when, and how you give the pills. Twice a day, and close to the same time as possible, for the rest of their lives!

I have a Black & Tan out of Mr Crocketts Blk Cozar dog. He goes back to his Nute dog. This is the only survivng pup out of this litter and shows potential. His T levels were in the normal range but on the low end. Going to try it out for a few months and see if it corrects the problem.

I had one diagnosed low, treated it for months and then stopped because of the cost and the fact that I still think its mostly a racket. My dog showed no health problems whatsoever, never has , but was a knothead and my owner/partner insisted we get him tested. He tested low, we treated it till it was properly adjusted, then treated another 4 months before I said I'm done with this. Never could tell the slightest difference in any way and he is still a knothead. But a much cheaper to keep knothead today. I'm sure some of these thyroid dogs are for real, but I believe many, if not most, are hoping they can medicate their way out of a chiteater.

Three things. One ,I am pretty sure I read that once you get these dogs on thyroid meds for any length of time you can't go back. Supposedly it creates changes in the thyroid and it becomes dependent on the medication.
Two , This has been beaten to death. But I absolutely believe there is merit to the dog feed causing some of the problems. Research it on here and you will see one after another that changed feeds and got results.
Some feeds have a lot of iodides and supplements added that mess with the thyroid function. There are also some food additives in feed that mess with the thyroid. I posted a study done by a college that proved it.
High iodine levels actually can cause the thyroid to have low readings. Any thing that reads Iodites ,fishmeal, beets, and the really crazy one potassium iodide.

Potassium iodide is a chemical compound, medication, and dietary supplement. As a medication it is used to treat hyperthyroidism, in radiation emergencies, and to protect the thyroid gland when certain types of radiopharmaceuticals are used.
And this may be in your dogs feed. So yep, that is right , it treats OVERACTIVE thyroids so guess what? It is actually lowering your dogs thyroid out put.

Three ,Make sure your vet ran blood tests for lymes and ericlosis because they will cause low levels other wise causing a sick thyroid and once treated the thyroid recovers on its own.

Pat

Great post based on FACTS and not opinion. Dog food is not regulated like human food and one has to be very careful. Appreciate the info. Dave

To add to what pat said, a dog will go low at times and may just need to rest and recover. I truly believe a high percentage of “thyroid dogs” are not in true need of the meds. A more elaborate blood panel test is needed to test T3,T4 and free T3 and T4. To determine why it is low. I believe that test runs about 400 most places and a lot of people don’t go that far with it, they just medicate. Many reasons that it could be low. I didn’t have any luck with food changes myself. Some claim they have and if that fixed them up, it’s a easy fix.

$400 for a complete profile is a lot of money compared to just $50 to check a T3 or T4 level. If you just get one level checked, is it better to look at T3 or T4? I understand that you need to get the whole profile to know exactly why your dog's level is low. But in the end if you are just going to treat the low level, does it really matter why? As I understand it, everyone monitors T4 levels but T4 must be changed to T3 in the blood. So wouldn't it be better to monitor T3 levels since some dogs have a problem changing T4 to T3?

You should just ask Thomasg. He knows how to treat this, he had a young dog die from not treating it.

A complete panel isn't $400 according to him either. You can get a complete panel done at MI state for $68 according to him.

I had a thyroid dog. He was operating fine when I got him and just fell off quickly after I got him. Acted depressed and sluggish. I had him tested. Tested at .7. Gave him meds and it was like a night n day, in 2 weeks of starting meds.

But a study was just done and it showed that you could give it all at the same time.

from my experience with the meds its at its most effective 3 hrs after administering it and gradually wears off. But yeah you can give it all at once but if you feed twice a day it makes more sense to split it up. But also I've heard not to give it with food or close to then because it bonds to the food. Don't know how much truth there is to it though.

Often times low thyroid T4 will improve if a dog has been sick whether from tick or other reasons. So by doing a full panel you can find out if purity gland and thyroid gland are working correctly. If so and all other hormones are in order, the dog just needs to heal most likely.

Meds

I take thyroid meds and I have to take mine once a day, 1 hour before eating anything. You must take on empty stomach and not eat anything for at least one hour, this allows meds to absorb in the body. Best to give early in the morning per Doctors. FAILURE to give as directed and you will not get the full benefit from the medicine. Dave

It is best that way with dogs too. Gene Dodd is a authority on these issues and she says to always give it away from food.

the indexx snap 4 d x is the cats meow for ticks and should be done to rule out the sick thyroid issues . m.s,u. fee 34 $ .

So what's the best feed to use for thyroid dog's? I feed victor red bag. My vet told me to put fish oil over my dog's food. I tried that and he wouldn't eat it. I can't remember everything he said the fish oil helps with. I've read some people say fish base dog food helps I might try it.

Read specifically about the fish base food ,fish oils, etc.

Additionally ...Without getting this thread deleted A certain feed was named that dozens were having the same problem with probably because it was too high in iodine. At least that was what the poster said .

As far as hereditary Thyroid issues.

Once a dog has developed thyroid dysfunction it becomes an inheritable trait .
A study I cited on a past post showed excessive iodine caused damage to the thyroid in developing puppies in about 6 weeks.
Those pups would all likely go on to be thyroid dogs and now pass it on to their pups.

Dogs with sick thyroid from tick disease ,etc once the under lying issue is resolved .The thyroid in most cases returned to normal function.
