Hunting Exposure
I was having a conversation with a buddy of mine today. We were discussing which is better on a hound. 3 nights a week for 3 hours equaling 9 hours, Or 6 nights a week for one hour equaling 6 hours? Just wondering everyone’s opinion!

People accuse me of being color blind. The truth is I will hunt red ones, blue ones, black and white ones, yellow ones, black and tan ones, or even brindle ones; Just as long as they are English!
Who would spend the time to get all geared up, load dogs, drive to hunting spot and the quit after an hour? I just can't see that. Hunt 6 nights a week for as long as you can.

What works for me is hunting when I can. I control their life they don’t control mine. Never been one of those who could hunt half the night 6 nights a week. I’m not one of those who is blessed with a full night of hunting right behind my house, I’ve got a drop or two and other than that I’ve got to hit the road if I want to hunt 3-4 hours. In a perfect world I’d like to hunt two weekday hunts maybe 2 hours each and one night a weekend for 5-6 hours. That would allow me to get my fix and would keep my dogs hunted up nicely enough to suit me as I just pleasure hunt. Hunting alone makes it harder to get out and go pretty regular too.
Question for you guys that hunt every night, how far are y’all traveling to your spots ?
At this point in my life I barely even hunt but I did get out 6 straight nights week before last. Back in the day, I hunted 20 or maybe 30 nights straight but I never had family or much of a job. Guys would tell me "hey man, I got another life, yah know ?" Well, I don't.
I hunt 3 to 10 miles from home, seldom farther.

I used to hunt any where from out the back gate to maybe six miles. Now its one to twenty five miles. Dang the new houses and deer clubs!

There's five areas I hunt. From 10 to 20 turnouts in each area. The best hunting is 15 to 30 miles. Hunting alone, I normally hunt within 5 miles from the house. Length of hunt isn't my goal. Treeing 5 or more trees with coon makes me feel like I've been coon hunting. Treeing a couple coon is fine but I'm a little disappointed in my hounds. I attempt to hunt 3 to 5 nights per week .

My buddy Pat and I turned 4 dogs loose around 2300 last night poured coffee listened for the dogs, dogs struck at about a 1/4 and treed had to walk almost half mile to dogs, they had the coon petted the dogs up, called em off told em to heel back at truck drinking coffee by 0030. home by 0100. we do that about 3-4 times a week once a week we will hunt 5-6 hours or all night depending on if the coon are moving if first 2 tracks are cold ones while we do enjoy listening to dogs work a rough old track come treed and have em. if your dogs do that twice in one night go home. If we are treeing a coon every drop within a 1/4 of the truck we keep hunting. Back gate to 2 hours just depends on how much time we have to hunt and where we want to go.

I think you have to factor in what kind of night it is. All nights are not equal even though you may want to hunt. Conditions and animals movement might not agree with you.
So I am not sure a set time and a number of days can give you a "whats better" answer.

I worked a 12 hr swing for twenty years, and i got one long stretch off once per month, 9 days in a row. When i was working it was tough to get anything at all done, living 45 minutes away from job by the time i got home and fed up it was almost 8:00, getting up at 4:00 i disnt have much time. Plus switching from daylight to nights and back took a toll. When long break rolled around i always tried to hunt every night all night long. I now have a monday thru friday where one week i work first next week second shift, off by 2:00 on daylight off by 10:00 second, i get way more hunting done and way more accomplished with the dogs now. Once we go to daylight savings the getting off at 10:00 and hunting to daylight is nice.

I wish I had some hunting as close to home as some of you guys. I’ll average 150 miles a night. When I’m going to be pushing one I’ll try and hunt 4-5 hours a night if I’ve got to work the next Day when I’m off hunt until daylight. We have pulled dogs off trees at 10ambefore.
Wildcat, you said it just like I hunt. I have 3 small spots left. THANK YOU rich deer hunters.
I know the feeling Roy. What few places I have left I feel like I'm walking on egg shells to keep hunting it. I posted another thread about hunting public land. I'm about to the point to say the heck with kissing up and catering to folks just to have little spot to hunt when the deer and turkey hunters arnt around. Our public land isn't the greatest but there is plenty of it where I live and its wide open to anyone not just the almighty deer hunters. I'd rather drive a little further and hunt without worry or hassle than I had hunt close to home and worry about my dogs reading a posted sign or god forbid they disturb one of those trophy bucks. To be honest, I will be doing good to make it out once or twice a week for the next little while but I am going to keeping hunting and go when I can and make the most of it. If that means one night a week for 3-4 hours thats better than nothing. The way some of yall talk about hunting every single night most on here couldn't justify keeping dogs if they only hunted as much as I did. I've been doing it too long and enjoy my dogs too much to get rid of them even if it means not hunting as often as I once did.
If I’m hunting alone usually make 1 and done whether that’s 30 min or 3 hours. Hunting with buddies can be a couple hours or all night. Usually get to hunt 3 nights a week but this season I had to take on some extra work so hunting was limited to maybe 1 night a week. Hunting alone I usually hunt 5 min from the house, hunting with buddies can be 5 min from the house to 45 min from the house. Ideally for me I’d like to be able to hunt 2-3 hours with good dog work 3-4 nights a week. I had a young dog this season I’ve fooled with and in all honestly have seen no difference starting him on 1 night a week compared to young dogs of the past on 3-4 nights a week, you’ll have Good and bad either way. I also haven’t noticed any difference in the way my old dogs have done, they seem to be fairly consistent in either scenario.

Forget the number of hours. Anytime you do something more. Then the dog is learning more. It is getting in and out of the truck more. It is being cast more. It is going through the hunting routine more. I think more is better.

Most likely more often more hours is best if the dog holds up, but more important to me )and I think to the progress of the dog) is to stop on a good note if possible. Some times I make one turn out and the young dog does really well and I go home. But I am not an expert trainer nor do I have the best dogs so what do I know? lol.

More often for shorter periods of time is better than days off then hunting longer. The age of the dog can be a determining factor as ell, one of the best pup men i have ever known who has had a bunch of pups at 5 and 6 months old treeing there on coons once said to me, remeber they are still babies, take them out, let them tree a coon, and put them up. Gradually increase the time as they get older. The last few i have started i try to hunt like in a hunt, cutting off trees, and quitting after two hours and then load up and move or go in.
