Considering a new kennel....

When thinking of concrete vs elevated decking. Would you still go with decking even if you plan on spraying them out everyday? I am strongly considering the decking but i do not like the spacing most people put in theirs. Any thoughts, pros, cons.... Currently have concrete but i cant get in behind to clean out very easily.

I grew up using dirt pens. Not bad as long as they drain well. Mud is a bad thing.

I used concrete for about 12 years. It's a daily chore to spray them down. My problem with concrete is the liquid waste puddles in the kennel. Also, the daily wash out requires a drainage system or septic system.

I currently have kennels with crushed gravel in the bottom. By far my favorite. Liquids dissipate and solids are easily removed with a rake shovel. The stuff works almost like kitty litter. Also, it is very cheap!!!

I used crused gravel also for about 10 years worked good but just wanted a little cleaner so went to elevated decking need to seal it evendors if it is treated just cleaner I think but I used 1 by 6 flooring I used a carpenter pencil as a space it has widens as it dried out I love bit concrete just to expensive I have 700 on a 3 dog keenel from ground to finished product and I love it gona add some recepticle in a day or so for fans a ND a few lights then it be done oh don't know if you have a rural king but I bought a 100 foot roll of no climb horse fence for 65 bucks and I also used 1 by to seperate keenels. All of mine are 4 by 10

A friend of mine just recently put pea gravel down for the flooring in his kennel...it looks really nice but don't know how it's gonna work out in the future.

My current set-up in indoor area with concrete and then the exterior run is crushed stone. It has worked well for awhile but then when i have been using bedding on the inside of the winter time, the dogs have tracked alot of bedding out of their kennels into the stone and does not allow it to drain very well. It can all be cleaned out but there is an awful smell created that seems to stay around especially when its wet and then gets hot. Do others that have the elevated or full concrete run into this oder? I expect it a little bit but not like mine currently have.

I use crusher run gravel for my kennel. I thought about concrete when I built it but the people I know that used concrete have constant rat problems. Rats move in and tunnel under the concrete because of the availability of dog food morsels. If it was not for that I would have used concrete no questions asked.

Yes I have had the same problem especially with cedar bea ding I know have a raised keenel with crush run under and over crush run 1 inch gravel best thing to do is put lime under the keenel it eats the smell pretty good and helps break fown anything that is spray ed out that you don't scoop up

To clean the stone area spread a bunch of lime on it. Then use hose to wash it in and let stone dry. After drying spread a touch more lime. And use a rake to get it under the top. And odors should be solved.

I have about 6-8 inches of pea gravel in my kennels. 10x10 inside my barn and 10x12 on outside of barn thats covered. So even in winter up here when it snows I don't have to shovel snow.

Here's mine. Ive had gravel the last couple years and love it. I put a solid layer of lime down first, then I put weed and grass blocker the black felt stuff. Then I put fence wire so they cannot dig, then gravel on top.

Imo I have had crush stone and tie out on grass and many other combinations one tht e years and have had concrete the last 10 with a fall in it and would. Ot trade it for any other type . Clean daily hose down Clorox once a month are so and it stays very clean no smell etc.. Course I also Lyme on the back Sid where the water drains etc. couple times a yr also but to me it has been the easiest year round to maintain ! The crush stone isn't terrible eventually the smell is going to stay enough urine on the stone and when are if you get any snow fall they are a bear to keep clean when snow is frozen and everything else you are taking hunks of stone with you feces when you are able to break it lose . Long term they take a lot more upkeep to keep sanitary myself do not understand the above ground kennels a,ot of people like due to the fact they c,aim the feces falls thru but even if it does it is still there on the ground and has to be cleaned up and pressure treated wood is also goin to soak the urine up and on humid days propably smell pretty good even with yea of Clorox also , bottom line I think all the shared methods will work but none are self cleaning and they all require work and responsabiltiy to upkeep year round . Do what you can afford and in 20 years you will find out what you like the. Best as polls on the forums will make you that much more confused lol good luck

concrete by far the best in my opinion...I shovel poop daily into a 5 gallon bucket that I line with a 13 gallon trash bag. the 5 gallon bucket does have a lid...dump it out in main trash twice a week...and wash down kennels once a day...

worm less and treat for fleas once in a great while because of a cleaner environment...flies are kept to a minimum as well...

KENNEL

I built this Kennel a couple years ago. I live on the River and Winch Sinker Cypress out and saw it on my Wood- Mizer Saw Mill. All the Kennel Houses are Sinker Cypress inside and out. I put Gutters on the back with one down spout. I have a gradual slope in the concrete with a catch basin at the end. When it fills up as I wash it out I pull that white pipe up and it flushes it out like a commode flushing. I built the houses up because the River when it floods gets about 3 or 4 feet deep in here and I didn't want the River Silt getting into the Houses making a big mess to clean out. So the first deck up is a 3 foot jump then another 3 feet to the Upper Deck. The houses face South and in the Winter the Hounds love laying out on the lower deck soaking up the Sun. When pups are 5 to 6 months old I pull the ramps out of there Kennel and they have to start jumping to go to their house. Teaches them to jump and load plus they get more of a work out every day jumping up and down getting their feed and water. They are insulated to. Love the concrete, wash out in morning and evening don't take 10 minutes. Bleach it once a month and scatter pellitized Lime around Kennel time to time and there is No Smell at all. If I did it again there are a couple things I would do different but all in all it suites me and the Hounds just fine.

This is my setup. 10X10 concrete, electric, water, septic boxes on the inside are 36x36.
