-- my experience with dogtra! (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928344247)
my experience with dogtra!
I purchased a dogtra 500 bark limiter not to long ago. About a month after using it and really liking it the dog it was on somehow got it off and put very light chew marks on it. It worked for about a month after that. I called dogtra and they told me to send it in. It was only a couple months into the warranty so I shipped it to them to have it fixed. I received a call yesterday saying I had to pay $42 for repair and $16 for shipping. I was getting a little irritated but nicely asked why I was being charged to fix something that was under warranty. She replied that their technitions said because of the chew marks my warranty was void. I politely told her I'll never buy another dogtra product and it was rediculous that the warranty was void because of chew marks on the protective covering that is made to protect the internals of a bark limiter that shouldn't have came of the dog in the first place. That's like a car dealership telling you they aren't going to replace a faulty engine part because your paint is scratched. Just my experience with a company that will never get my bussiness again.
My experience with them has been just the opposite. I've have my shocker for years and with the exception of replacing the rechargeable batteries I haven't had any problems with it. They were very helpful and professional with me. My unit wasn't chewed or anything though. I think they sell a good product at a good price. Sorry you had a bad experience.

I really liked there product and was a great unit until it quit. Just figured I got a bad one which wasn't no big deal. Customer service is what made my mind up.
Talked to dogtra again today and they didn't want to work with me on it at all. I'm going to keep this up every day so all can read. They are shipping me it back and I'll try to post pics of what they say voided my warranty.
wow I was just considering purchasing one of these exact collars as it was recommended! I am glad I read this 1st as I intend on using to break young pups from barking in the kennel and they are let into a community yard daily so it sounds like if they scratch it they dont want to stand behind this product. I need something for a WORKING and ACTIVE dog not one the just sits on the couch and is walked on a leash! So can someone recommend another product?

Dogtra is one of the best companies out there and their products are top of the line. How do you expect a dog chewing on the case to not void the warranty? It is on there to protect the circuit board from dirt and weather, not to make it indestructible. If you left it on top of your dog box and it was damaged when it hit the pavement would you expect them to replace it? I have the exact same collars and one of them went bad. It was also chewed on by a puppy and never did I think that it should be covered under warranty because that is damage caused by me, the owner. That's not their fault or problem.
Tri Tronics replaced my chewed up collar no questions asked!
quote:same here , had my 70 on a pup that was barking and had another pup in the lot with her and it was chewing at the case while on the other pups neck when they were playing and I didn't notice till afterwards , sent it back because it wouldn't charge and they took care of it no questions asked , the bite marks had nothing to do with it not charging either . I could see if the dog chewed it up and caused a failure and you was trying to get warranty outta of it but sadly this is what things have come to , cooperate America trying to stick it to everyone over the almighty dollar !

And autozone has a lifetime warranty on a start while napa has a 5 year warranty... Doesn't mean that Napa is doing wrong by not trying to be just like autozone. Dogtra products are several steps above anything tri tronics has put out for several years. You have to take the good with the bad. If yOu want a superior product, make sure you don't let a dog chew on the shock collar in case something goes wrong with it.
not saying dogtra isn't a nice outfit but just seems like this fella got the shaft on this deal .

The cases are meant to protect against dirt and water. The pressure put on the internal works by the pressure of a dog bite could cause damage internally. If it has bite marks on the outside then pressure was put on inside. If the collar was placed on the dog correctly then in no way should it have ever came off in the first place. I might could understand if it was a puppy and the bite marks were small but if it was a full size hound then we are talking a lot more pressure and it possibly damaged the inside of the collar. I look at it this way, I do not build the collar but the tech that worked on it does and I am pretty sure if he thought was problem from the factory then it would be covered under warranty. I don't think it would matter if it feel off the truck onto the road, chew marks on it, or any other unusual wear on the collar, anything not considered normal wear and tear would void the warranty. Sounds to me like they determined the reason the collar no longer worked was not a fault on their end and you may have to pay a little to get it repaired. If your not a tech and know how to work on them or fix them it is hard to say you got a raw deal because you don't know for sure what caused the collar to stop working. Rather then assume bad deal and down the company you could take a little of the heat and say well maybe I should have put the collar on a little tighter and learn from the mistake. I learn from my mistakes every day and will till the day I die. Some mistakes cost us $58.00 and some cost a lot more. Just my opinion.

I couldnt expect any company to pick up this tab. I have had dogs get regular collars off before and chew them up, who picks that tab up? I do.Dogtra is a good company. Now if the supplier of your choice will pick up the tab, well that is a bonus! Just couldnt expect it for me. JMO

Not getting into the Warranty issue but Dogtra YS 500 is the best bark collar I have ever used. My only problem is that it don't have a smart charger. I think the YS 300 does but never used one of them. As far as the comments about Tri Tronics they don't make them anymore. The bark collars have been switched to the Garmin name and come in a battery model and rechargeable model. They are nice and compact and have auto rise technology to try and get the message across to the dog what they are doing wrong. If I need one in the future the Garmin Bark Limiter Deluxe (rechargeable) is the one I will be using.
If you are going to get the new Garmins, make sure to get the ones with the changeable points. Have one with the short points ( not changeable) that will not work with a long haired dog. Have a couple of the Dogtra's and from now on will be the only ones I use.
The new garmin bark collars DO NOT WORK. I got on right out of the box that never worked. The dealer gave me a new one and it works once in a blue moon, they are worthless. I still have a few of the real old tri tronics that work great. Its to bad they use to be the best till they added the sleep mode. They haven't worked since.
quote:it was a 4 month old pup that chewed it. I wasn't born yesterday if I felt it shouldn't have been replaced I would have sent it in. And if the chew marks was the problem why did it still continue to work? The collar was on tight also. I'm not posting to have a debate with you, I was posting to let future buyer know the reason I will not buy another dogtra product. Just a quick review on what I believe might be a good product but not good customer service and reliability. I could care less whether you buy 100 or none I don't make a penny either way.

Andy you make a good point about the contacts.
This post makes me want to try a new dogtra, I have never had one but it seems like a lot of people like them. A dog chewing on a collar could make it not water proof, which is why it worked for a while after it was chewed.
