Tire feeders

Anybody used tire feeders before? And do they work good?

I have and they work very well. They work good on young dogs

What size whole saw bit do you use?

Inch and a half and I use corn . Sometimes there will be 4 coons on it at a time . I had a couple of feeders out and they were eating 50 pound a week

Do you put water with it?

I was told if you take a 5 gallon bucket fill about 3/4 of they way with corn then fill it up with water and about a half a bag of sugar and grape koolaid it will draw them and they will use it like crazy.. anyone else try this?

I get old tires that are still mounted on a rim. I cut holes in one side with a knife. Pour dry corn in and add creek water. Works great while the bears are sleeping.

Feeders

I use buckets. Went to Home Depot bought 6 buckets and 6 lids ( 2 for spares ). I bought a 8 foot piece of pipe ( metal ), the same one you use to hang your cloths on in the closet. It was 1.25 inches in diameter. Also bought a 1.25 inch hole saw bit and some apoixy. About $30-$40 all together if I'm remembering right.

Take bit and cut hole. Insert pipe, about 1 inch on inside of bucket, about 1 inch on outside of bucket. Glue the heck out of it. Helps to spray around hole with brake cleaner and ruff it up some so glue bonds better. Do this to 4 of the buckets and set aside for 24hrs. While your waiting...

With the other two buckets, fill with shelled corn to the very top, pour a packet or two of koolaid on it and some sugar if you want too. Now fill to the rim with water and give it a couple days to soak it all up. You will have to add some more water as it absorbs into the corn.

Place feeder buckets along a water source somewhere attached to a tree by bungie cords. I use the two buckets to fill my 4 feeder buckets. I will start souring corn again right after I fill them cause the coons empty the feeders in 2-4 days. I tried to place mine so my pup won't go to the bucket and hit a track, but rather hit a hot track from a coon coming or going if that makes sense. Good luck, they are helpful to get a pup going. But remember to much of a good thing can be bad. You don't want to end up with a bucket dog.

I've used old golf cart tires and strap them to a tree bout 6 ft high then just fill them up with corn, table scraps etc. Works good but possums like'em too. Also use the five gallon buckets. Also with corn but sweet feed works better I think. If you have a slow moving shallow creek you can pour out corn in it and it'll sour and the slow moving will carry the scent on down the creek drawing coons for a ways.

I use tire feeders once they find it....it goes fast I use wet corn and grape kool-aid

I really do not know how much you save by using corn instead of dog food. Not much I would think if you are putting sugar in there too.
If your coons are thin, go with dog food. Much heathier and they should raise more young if you are feeding regularly.
Lots simpler too, just pour and go!

just got corn yesterday whole corn local feed mill 15.50 for 100 lbs now if I can just keep the bear out of it ! going down in the morning and moving it between 3 tree's and putting chain to each tree so they can't flip it and empty it they have raided it 3 times in the last 2 weeks !

Grape koolaid and sugar helps it ferment. Coons get drunk.

Bear problem here also.

I've found you don't have to use coolaid . You get them coming and they'll stay on it . I use a tire with the rim still in it . Saw holes around it and lay it in the edge of the creek or ponds where I hunt . Don't put the holes to close together , make them work for it . No bear here I just lay the tire out . Biggest problem just keeping corn in the feeder

I use tire feeders also. I cut four 1 1/2" holes on the top side. I put corn in a bucket with water and put it in the sun for about 5 days. Thus allows it to starts fermenting and the coon can't resist the smell of the sour mash. I'm in bear country here so I stake the tire down with a 3 foot long t bar made out heavy rerod. The bears work pretty hard to get the corn out but they don't get much and they can't flip the tire. On some feeders I got coon coming in on and off all day long. The only problem is that some of the coon will tree right next to the feeder. It's still nice for young dogs once in awhile. It's pretty tough to find them around here this time of the year before the corn starts earring out.

I used to cut off a sapling and drop the tire down over it to keep the bears from carrying it off. Our bears would just grab the tire with their mouth and rip the side wall out, then eat ALL the corn. Now I only feed when the bears are laid up in the winter.
