coon / deer ratio

On a big tract like two sections or 1,000 acres with good woods and streams and crops what do you think the ratio of coons to deer would be? I'm inclined to think maybe two coons to one deer. The deer hunters around here think there are ten times more coons because of what they see at feeders. I only kill about 120 coons a year where I hunt and I'm sure there are plenty left but those deer hunters kill about 120 deer off the same place. So 1:1 might be more accurate. What do you think?

Maybe 3:1 doubt it....has there every been a deer population count done? Doubtful but I believe they would be about even.

I don't really know, but last winter there was around 100 acres of harvested corn ground around my place and I counted 82 deer feeding during the day time. I know for a fact there aren't 82 coon in 1000 acres around me. How do I know because nobody kills every deer they see around here but every Tom,Dick, and Harry kills every coon they see plus a lot of them use poison for those they don't see. DNR will hunt you down if you kill a deer but look the other way on coon. It's a wonder we have as many coon as we do.

Prolly 30 deer to one coon round here. All I know in a week as of today. I had 400 game cam pics. 4 coon 2 bobcats and rest was deer. Sucks!

That's what I don't get. See, good biomass translates to meat Per acre . A one hundred pound deer equals 10 ten pound coons around here but probably only 5 twenty pound big coons up ya'lls way. So deer are more efficient if I was a cattle farmer than the predators , if you can consider a coon in the predator class. Anyway , Beats me. But bottom line is I would think off the top of my head if I got seven deer I can see every night on my little 70 acres which I can only see about 10 acres of pasture in. Then it ought to be 700 pounds of coons or 70 coons back in the woods . Which ain't nowhere close. There might be a mamma and a few kits at the start of the season and I don't even hunt here cause the dogs would get gone, and by March , I am lucky to see a track. There just might be more numbers of deer dis regardeing the weight.

I don't know the numbers but I would say deer outnumber coon by a wide margin here in our area.

I've hunted some trashy pups that at times it seemed 1000:1 deer to coon!

I have 2 game cameras set up over two corn piles in one of the best coon hunting sections on our club. One camera consistently has 7 different deer and 4 different coons the other has 15 different deer and 3 coons. This is in about a 75 acre section. I delete most of the pictures but here are a few I kept.

Fish and Wildlife claim there are around 6 deer per acre in the county I live. I would imagine there are more coon than that but not many more.

Here at our Place its about 20 to 1 !!!! No Joke at all .. at least 20 deer to each coon.....

Raccoons(Scientific name: Procyon lotor) live within a home range of 3-5 square miles. Boars tend to roam farther... up to 20 square miles. All raccoons will roam farther than normal if food becomes scarce. These mammals tend to live alone most of the year. Boars are very territorial and their home ranges seldom overlap. In late spring and summer, raccoons are often seen roving in family bands of the sow and her kits. You may sometimes find an entire family in one tree. In fall and winter a "coon tree" may contain as many as six animals huddled in the same den. The Back to Top

Where in Wisconsin?
Raccoons live Raccoons occur throughout Wisconsin, in every county. They are more numerous in the southern part of the state than in the northern counties, because the winters are milder in the south, there are more areas of favorable habitat and there are more food resources available in the southern counties than up north.

How's it Goin'?
Raccoons have adapted well to life in Wisconsin Raccoons have very healthy and the Orient.
Raccoon populations generally consist of a high proportion of young animals, with 1/2 to 3/4 of the fall population composed of animals less than one year old. Winter severity, food abundance, hunting and trapping pressure, and levels of disease and parasitism ultimately determine the density of local raccoon populations.
The population density of raccoons varies widely from one raccoon per acre to one raccoon per 150 acres. The average raccoon density in Wisconsin's prime raccoon habitats is generally around one animal per 30-40 acres. The higher raccoon densities are found in river bottoms and agricultural areas that are well interspersed with woodlands and waterways. Medium raccoon densities occur in woodlands, wetlands, prairies, new residential areas built in farm fields and in expansive farmfields. Low densities are common in extensive evergreen forests. In older residential areas where food may be abundant, and cover is plentiful, raccoon densities can approach one animal per 12-20 acres.



Since raccoons are so abundant in Wisconsin, most wildlife management emphasis is on regulating the hunting and trapping seasons to help control the size of the population. However, individuals interested in managing their lands for raccoons can focus on restoring habitats along streams and rivers and preserving large den trees.

I was just searching for raccoon densities and that is what I found for Wisconsin. I did not find anything for SC or GA. But they say from one coon per acre to One coon per 150 acres. Heck , that's the way it seems to be around here about January. If I get back in the woods on the tract I hunt it might be one per 150 acres . As long as I stay by the marsh edge it might be 1 per acre till I thin them down.

I just found that my county is supposed to have 30 to 45 deer per square mile (640 acres) in 2000. That's the latest from DNR. Also found out we got 3 coyotes per square mile and 4 hogs, but nothing about coons.

we have waaaaaaaaaaaay more coons then deer. Around here you cant drive a mile without seeing one or two coons dead on the side of the road

I just talked to two soaking wet deer hunters been up there in the drizzlle and wind all day and did not see a deer. Wonder why? But both saw between 5 and ten coons. I said i would take care of the coons and they were happy but did not want me to hunt till after deer season scared the dogs would scare off any deer (that they don't think they have) from thinking about coming to their wilderness rows of planted pines.LOL
