Petite Dog Question

I don't think "Petite" is the word, but that's what the judge used to describe my young male dog. So here's my question,
How can I put muscle/weight on a dog to help fill him out?

He just turned 2yrs old, is small boned (as are the others from his litter), active, and lean as can be. He's a some what picky eater, but still eats about 4-cups of dry food a day. Yet he remains scrawny.

Pic is from fall of 2010, but he hasn't changed a bit.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Laura

May be just the pic but he don't look scrawny to me. I see a lot of male dogs built a little more like a female with lighter bone ,etc..
Muscle comes from exercise + food to sustain the amount of work they get. A basic amount of food is usually a starting point and then watched for body weight. I find it hard to stay at what I think is a perfect weight for a dog but seem to be going back and forth over that point as various things cause changes.

From what I can see in pic. I would say both dog and handler are very nice looking !!! You have the dog in nice show position which is hard to do on the ground. Maybe a little wide in back and narrow in front, try to hit a width on all four legs that looks even and natural. When the judge referred to Your dog as petite He may have meant compared to the other dog which He liked better.I think You'll do fine and should easily make Gr.Sh. Good Luck, and have fun.

What he said! If it was just one judge that said this I think you are doing the right thing. Take those words into consideration, but also with a grain of salt. Change your dogs stance and your good to go!

Its hard to tell anything about him from the pic but the best thing to do to put mass on him is to swim him..

From the picture you have he does not look petite.A lot of dogs will suddenly begin to gain mass at 2 years of age.He is still a young dog physically at 2.I have a female that never has bulked out even at 4 years of age.

nice pic

I see nothing bad about his size. He although looks weak in the backend(hindquarters). He looks like he needs to be excercised a little more. You have a nice dog. Good luck.

Thanks All. I'll try and get some pics posted of him up on the bench.

He's an active boy, although I haven't hunted him much, but he still get's out and about for walks and runs, etc. He was such a block when he was a pup that I thought I was going to have another horse on my hands. Soon as he hit 1yr old he just slimmed down.

I did a little other searching around and think some added goodies to his food and a good work out program are in order.

See how it goes!

my skeet is lean. i can feed him the whole frig and he would still be lean. he does have muscle definition though. run the crap out of the dog or use a treadmill on a slight incline, be forewarned, you can overdo the treadmill.
bye the way, he looks really good to me.

petite can be a size zero in human sizes or a size 6 like i am. beauty is in the eye of the beholder. he looks good.

From the pic, I can't tell that he is small. Lots of good suggestions on possible ways to improve his physical structure, but if be was meant to be any bigger, it's just not going to happen. I would say just concentrate on over-all muscle tone.

I have two males like this, Tracker, which you have seen in many, many photos, now Wade (Second Edition Making Waves). Both are small for males, but both have done some nice winning on the bench. I worried myself sick over trying to make Tracker appear larger and it's just not going to happen. He is physically an athlete and every ounce of weight on him is muscle, but he still appears small next to most males.
Wade is the new challenge. I do think be could improve in muscle tone, which we are working on by swimming him.

Not every judge will like your male hound due to his smaller size, but please don't let that detour you from continuing to show him. I almost did. I am so glad that I kept trying, Tracker just recently won a Group 3 in an All-breed show. That's not meant as a brag, but as encouragement.

If you really like this dog and he fits breed standard, show him with pride! You will be surprised at what you can accomplish. It might take a take a little more work and effort, but that's only gonna make you more proud of your accomplishments. Good luck with him Laura

most dogs are full grown by 1yr that dont mean the chest still
want spread and fill out some around 3-4.small bone may not
handle a lot of weight.

Just a suggestion i had 2 walkers i purchased that were of poor weight and lacking a bit of muscle tone.....I started feeding them "Purina K-9 Advantage" for high energy dogs This is not the purina found at walmart ....the have put on healthy weight and built muscle and have a beautiful shiny coats, i do not do bench, but i do have some lookers! : )

Posted by Laura Bell on 07-27-2011 06:11 PM:

Thank You all again for the input and messages!

There's really no way I can swim him, but I've got other activities in mind that might help him. Going to give it a shot and see. I will be taking before and after pictures of him that way I can see the difference and know what to work on.

I've gotten some good suggestion on how to help build muscle on him, so I'm convinced that a good diet/supplement plan and some workouts will help my little boy.

And Sabrina, I would have never guessed that Tracker was a small male! He always appeared to look strong and muscular in your photos.

put a harness on him and a heavy chain get a wagon throw some logs in there gradually getting heavier through out the weeks it will build him up in the muscle and tone i do this with my catch dogs for hog hunting never done it to my coon hounds but give it a try maybe it will bulk up his muscles jmo

What kind of food are you feeding him? Does he have round worms or tape? Check on those, also a high protein and fat dog food will help put weight on him. And like others said exercise. Those are all the simple things I'd start there. Some dogs are just "petite". Good luck

he don't look scrawny or petite to me but a good way to put muscle on him is to swim him in a pond or pool or something, also a good way to add on some weight is feeding him bread as well as his food

Posted by Laura Bell on 07-28-2011 03:39 PM:

Weight pulling, now there would be a good muscle builder! A Harness hooked up to a kids sled with some logs, I think that really would be good for him.

He's on a high protein dog food with a scoop of Puppy Chow mixed in for added fat. Worm Free and healthy.

I have been feeding him bread. This is going to sound weird, but I make sandwiches for my dogs for treats. Take a hot dogs bun, slice it up and add canned dog food in the center or lunch meat.....

Puppy chow, by that I'm guessing your talking about purina, which like its been said many of times is a garbage food. If you want to try a good food and is reasonable for a good food. Try diamond naturals extreme athlete, there is other good food out there also. To each there own

THanks Jarrod!

I've heard a lot of people are happy with Diamond Dog Food, but I can't get over how many dogs died from it a few years back.

That made me leery of trying Diamond too. I still would never use anything other than the "Naturals" line. Spoiled corn was what contaminated the feed that time, from what I've gathered. That could just as easily happen to ANY manufacturer that uses corn as an ingredient in their feed....

You don't have to use diamond there are a lot of great dog foods out there just they cost. And there were close to 50 other dog foods in that list that killed dogs, and like what was said it was corn, which is what u get in crappy dog food, naturals doesn't have corn in it.
