dog backtracking

I have an 18 month old walker that will run a beautiful track, he locates but when he gets to the tree he won't tree, he backtracks. I've heard that this is hard to correct. Any advice would be appreciated.

Come on guys. I know there are some experienced coonhunters on here right now. I really need some advice.

Let me be a little more clear with this post.
I did a search for backtracking and found some info.
I don't think he is actually running the track backwards
He is running it to the tree and going around and restarting
the same track or finding another track.
He just will not tree and I need some help on how to make
him realize the coon is up there.

we had a female like that and she would be close( 20 yrds or so) but would never tree and she starts most the tracks, and we would catch her and someone hold to and shot the coon in the leg and then squall him out to see if he'd climb down and hold her head and make her watch it, then let her fight it alone, and worked her on treein being able to see it, next night she went hunting she just clicked and started treein

a way

You might want to try to hunt him with another dog that will stay at the tree. Once the other dog trees does your dog tree with him/her at all? if he doesn't you should try and catch him if yo can or call him take him to the tree tie him at the and shoot the coon out to the other dog but don't let your dog have the coon. This worked for my uncle's dog and maybe it will help you out. Try it you have nothing to loose.

A couple of good ideas. Personally if I have to work a dog to get it to tree then it don't last long. I just prefer naturals..so much easier to train...just take to woods and don't screw them up and voila

Yeah Gravedigger that is what we all want so bad.....BUT it just doens't seem to happen like that with every hound. I posted this smae question a couple weeks ago. Got a 14 month old Hornet pup that was doing some backtracking. Well I continued to catch and scold him when he would do this and then take him to the tree and encourage him to tree....nothing! So he would get tied back away and watch the remaining show. Well last Saturday night(last night I have hunted because of this STUPID weather!!!) He did this same scenerio. But he meet me at the tree as i was walking to the other two hounds that had been treed for awhile. So I tied him up and encouraged him...nothing. So he was tied uyp about thirty feet from the tree and watched me love on the other hounds. i did this three diffrent times. Finally I brought him to the tree and he stuck his nose to the base and smelled up about four feet and just went to hammmering. I mean rubbing the hair off his belly people. I think he is coming around, he is still on a fine line but i just might get him goin in the right direction for this old boy I am hunting the hound for. My point is do anything positive you can to encourage the hound to tree. Do not lose your patience. If you know the hound is backtracking, catch him/her make sure they know you ar not pleased at all and take them to the tree and really encourage them to tree. Some it will wrk on some it will not. Gotta love the challenges coonhunting brings.

Pigskin, I own the TAR NAILOR DOG, won the 1997 senior super stakes with him, i owned the Storm dog sold him to JC Ellis, also o wned the Thunder dog he bought from me. I know how they were hunted and how many hunts they were in. I keep up with every dollar i spend from year to year. Now i have done nothing to you or said anything about you lets understand that. So you need to keep me and my dogs out of it. BUT IF YOU THINK THEY ARE CULLS COME TO KY RUN A SUMMER WITH ME WIN AS MUCH AS THEY HAVE THIN YOU CAN POST WHAT EVER YOU WANT. BUT UNTIL THIN DONT USE MY DOGS IN SOMETHING YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT!!!!!!!

Have you ever worked him on a caged coon? Even let him go and see it climb a tree (iwouldn't do this more than once). The next time let him bark it up , but not see you turn it loose, wait about 5 minutes then cut your dog loose. I had a 14 month old doing like yours. He tracked fine, just didn't know the track went up the tree, until I showed him with a caged coon. THis was a couple of weeks ago and now he's treed several alone.

Bactracking is one thing that is just about impossible to break a dog from, they may break themselves if they are young, 8 months to 12 - 13 months old, after that forget it. Get a different pup, would be my advice.

For everymonth you mess with a idiot, you could be working a real nice young dog.

I heard of a dog that back tracked so bad his back feet was on the tree and he was barking straight into the ground.

Have you tried spraying coon scent on the tree, alot of the time the coon will jump up 5or 6 feet and there is no scent at the base of the tree. After u have made sure there is a coon in the tree , spray a small amount of scent were your dog can smell it. this is only a thought.

The couple times I ever had that happen was in some snow. And that is because the snow cools the scent off so quick they don't know which way. The dog figured it out after and hit it correctly after he was took off a slick. I know my one old male doesn't circle after he smells the tree so that may be part of it too

Plain & Simple your dog has more track ability than tree ability right now in its stage of life,I would get the dog to start treeing without even cutting it loose,by this I mean hunt an experienced dog and let it get treed then walk that dog into the tree and work it on the tree by however it takes to get it excited,if it means tying it back or shooting out the coon and not letting the dog have any,do this a couple times/three/four,and then try when the older dog gets hooked walk the dog within 50-100yds. from the treed dog then cut it loose and listen for that young dog to go in and give it's locate and start treeing,it won't take long for that young dog to get the picture that up that tree is something good,and when you think you have it corrected then start hunting that dog by itself and sit back and enjoy.

Huntnerds, Have you ever had the meat with your pup and the coon got away and the houndcouldnt find it?

I watched a dog with a lighted collar that could flat out burn a track to the tree. Tree for 30 seconds, turn around and back track it just as fast, mouth wide open the whole time. Walk to the tree and she would meet you there. About 2 1/2 she came out of it. Never thought a dog could track that fast.
