bullets

what brand/type bullets do you folks use? I've been having really bad luck with one brand (shooting coons right in the eye only to have them keep staring with the other).

I have always used CCI long Rifle. I bought a new .17 caliber I'm going to try this fall. Should not em out dead.

Tim, you have to be careful where you shoot coons with the 17. You will blow a hole in the hide as big as your fist. You can also shoot the head almost plum off. I use CCI 22 long rifles.

I was thinking about this today myself. Now smaller coons will come down with one well placed shot but I always have those big coon that usually curl up in the crotch of a tree, and won't look at you, come out alive after a cople hits to the backside. We are only allowed to use .22 cal in short, long and long rifle. I use LR but I think something with a little more punch would be better. I have always used Winchester ammunition.

I just get the cheapest ole .22 bulet I can find. Usually Federal. I wouldnt mess with hollow points either unless you want them hitting the ground dead. With a hollow point you can shoot em in the leg and it may kill em dead. Those hollow points are very destructive.

I usually use the CCI, but I was out of them and picked up some Remington at shop close by. My buddy also had Remington shells (different type though). We were shooting coons in the head 3 and 4 times and they were still coming down with lots of fight. I learned my lesson.

winchester

i have always used winchester wildcats they knock em out pretty well, but with enough life left that my dogs can get some. i don't think i would use my 17 after i have seen what it does to a rabbit.

i use CCI also they seem to work well

I use a rem, hyper velosity, it seems to help the 10/22 keep firing. Those guns work great level, point it up in the air, sometimes they jam.

I've been having the worst luck with Winchester .22 LR ammo. Misfire after misfire. I won't be buying anymore of them. I've always had good luck with CCI or Federal. Certain times of the year, I'll throw in some of those sub-sonics.

You guys shooting those coons in the head and having them come out alive are kidding yourselfs. A coon shot thru the head with a .22lr is a dead coon.

CCI Velocitors

I've shot some coons with my 17 and it hasn't done much damage.

I have some of the CCI Velocitors, not impressed.

CCI stingers. If you guys want some more information, go to www.rimfirecentral.com There's alot of target shooting info on there but there is some hunting stuff too. Those guys know what they're talking about when it comes to rimfire ammunition.

ive had best luck with just plain old 22 long rifle- 40 gr bullets- the cheaper kind- need to clean gun a little more often with non coated bullets- hollow points or super velocity may be lighter grain-- sometimes the real " hot " bullets will break up - will make a real mess sometimes - try different bullets in your gun and see which is most accurate--when u find what works best stock up on those bullets--coon are about as hard to kill for their size as anything i know of- if you can see coons shoulder dont be afraid to shoot them behind the shoulder like u would a deer- be aware of the angle u are shooting at-when u are aiming up at steep angle hold a little lower- u need to hit them in vitals-- brain heart lungs spine-- eyes arent vital-- nose isnt either- thats why u occasionaly will hit one in the head and doesnt kill him- pete

i just buy 1 of those boxes with 550 in i don't shoot them but about 2 or 3 a year unless i am hunting a young dog and then i what him still kicking when he hits the grond just have be carefully which ones you shoot

why in the world would you shoot a coon that a dog treed? If you don't climb the tree and throw him out you ain't hunting!!!

Our coon get so big up here that they will usually grab ahold of you and toss you out to the dogs, that is when they decide to tree ...... normally you can't get them off of the ground and they really fight when they are on a moose or deer that they have just taken down!!!!!!!!!!!

Huron, all joking aside I have seen it done several times, but you could'nt pay me enough to throw out a kitten coon( lol ) A guy came down here one time from up near your country, dogs treed, we got in there and they had one. Looked like a pretty good sized coon to me, this fellow says look they treed a kitten! Well we decide to shoot him out, this little kitten coon puts a pretty good whippin on those dogs before they got the upper hand. The man says he had never seen a baby coon put up a fight like that!! A 10 or 12 pound coon is a good sized coon around here. A 20 pounder here is a giant.
